Book Synopsis The Diatom Flora of the Laptev Sea (Arctic Ocean) by : Holger Cremer
Download or read book The Diatom Flora of the Laptev Sea (Arctic Ocean) written by Holger Cremer and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph is a detailed taxonomical description of the diatom flora of the Laptev Sea (Arctic Ocean). The Laptev Sea is one of the most important epicontinental seas of the Arctic, marked by large freshwater inputs. Approximately 60% of the diatoms found in the Laptev Sea are freshwater species which originally occur in lakes and rivers of the Siberian hinterland. These diatoms are transported into the Laptev Sea by five large streams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic region has long held a fascination for explorers and scientists of many countries. Despite the numerous voyages of exploration, the na ture of the central Arctic was unknown only 90 years ago; it was believed to be a shallow sea dotted with islands. During Nansen's historic voyage on the polarship Fram, which commenced in 1893, the great depth of the central basin was discovered. In the Soviet Union, investigation of the Arctic Ocean became national policy after 1917. Today research at several scientific institutions there is devoted primarily to the study of the North Polar Ocean and seas. The systematic exploration of the Arctic by the United States com menced in 1951. Research has been conducted year-round from drifting ice islands, which are tabular fragments of glacier ice that break away from ice shelves. Most frequently, ice islands originate off the northern coast of Ellesmere Island. These research platforms are occupied as weather sta tions, as well as for oceanographic and geophysical studies. Several inter national projects, conducted by Canadian, European, and U. S. groups, have been underway during the last three decades. Although much new data have accumulated since the publication of the Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Arctic Seas volume in 1974 (Yvonne Herman, ed. ), in various fields of polar research-including present-day ice cover, hydrogra phy, fauna, flora, and geology-many questions remain to be answered.
Book Synopsis Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic by : Heidemarie Kassens
Download or read book Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic written by Heidemarie Kassens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic and its surrounding marginal seas are considered some of the most sensitive elements of the global environment, which may respond rapidly to climate change. However, due to various reasons, our knowledge of the processes which drive the Arctic system today and in the past is still relatively sparse. Based on a multidisciplinary approach, German and Russian scientists describe in this book the natural paleorecords and modern data which were collected over the past 6 years. These marine and terrestrial datasets provide important new insights into the causes, impacts, and feedback mechanisms of this extreme Arctic environment.
Book Synopsis Biology of Polar Benthic Algae by : Christian Wiencke
Download or read book Biology of Polar Benthic Algae written by Christian Wiencke and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work synthesizes the current state of knowledge on the biology of polar benthic marine algae and presents an outlook on their responses to changing environmental conditions in polar regions. Topics treated include environment, biodiversity and biogeography of micro- and macroalgae, including an update of the knowledge of the red algal flora of Antarctica. It treats the chemical ecology as well as the primary production and ecophysiology of polar benthic algae with new information on the important contribution of benthic microalgae to the productivity in costal areas.

From the preface This project was initiated in 1998 with the development of a surface diatomcalibration set for selected regions from the Arctic Islands.Under the study surface sediments, mosses, rock and otheravailable habitats were studied from 91 ponds and lakes. It became clear that the diatoms observed were new or undocumented. Detailed taxonomic studies were done at the Canadian Museum of Nature using SEM generated images andthe extensive Library. A must have for research in the Arctic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new perspective on the sedimentation processes in the White Sea, based on a multidisciplinary research study conducted between 2001 and 2016. It provides a comprehensive review and discusses the latest research findings on the ecosystem of this sub-arctic zone. The topics addressed include suspended particulate matter as a main source and proxy of the sedimentation processes in the White Sea; vertical fluxes of dispersed sedimentary matter and absolute masses in the White Sea; and the development history and quaternary deposits of the modern White Sea basin. The authors closely examine the abundance and species composition of microalgae associations and the environmental conditions in the bottom sediments of the White Sea, namely, heavy metal accumulation and aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The book ends contain a summary of the key conclusions and recommendations. Together with the companion volume Biogeochemistry of the Atmosphere, Ice and Water of the White Sea: The White Sea Environment Part I, it offers an essential source of information for postgraduate students, researchers, and stakeholders alike.
