Book Synopsis Synthesis, Properties and Applications of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond by : Dieter M. Gruen

This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are pleased to present the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop “Syntheses, Properties and Applications of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond” which was held June 7-10, 2004 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The main goal of the Workshop was to provide a forum for the intensive exchange of opinions between scientists from Russia and NATO countries in order to give additional impetus to the development of the science and applications of a new carbon nanostructure, called ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) composed of 2-5 nm crystallites. There are two forms of UNCD, dispersed particles and films. The two communities of researchers working on these two forms of UNCD have hitherto lacked a common forum in which to explore areas of scientific and technological overlap. As a consequence, the two fields have up to now developed independently of each other. The time had clearly come to remedy this situation in order to be able to take full advantage of the enormous potential for societal benefits to be derived from exploiting the synergistic relationships between UNCD dispersed particulates and UNCD films. The NATO sponsored ARW therefore occurred in a very timely manner and was successful in beginning the desired dialogue, a precondition for making progress toward the above stated goal. The discovery of UNCD completes a triadof nanostructured carbonswhich includes fullerenes and nanotubes.

Book Synopsis How to Read a Rock by : Jan Zalasiewicz
Download or read book How to Read a Rock written by Jan Zalasiewicz and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocks are time machines and the keepers of our history. This guide is a geological field trip through Earth’s incredible rock formations and the stories they hold Like rings on a tree stump hold the history of the tree, the history of Earth is written in its rocks. How to Read a Rock: Our Planet’s Hidden Stories teaches readers to decipher the rocks all around us, from backyard stones to mountain ranges, and trace Earth's history layer by layer. Spanning from prehistoric Earth’s shifting continents, to contemporary human impact, to the future surfaces of space exploration, the book reviews a remarkable array of topics, including: diamond volcanoes ancient coastlines, rivers, deserts, and coral reefs how animals have changed rocks making of mud urban rock strata human-made rocks and minerals current limestone rock crisis technofossils (the footprints humans will leave behind through their material goods) How to Read a Rock's brilliant imagery captures the power, majesty, and history of the planet. Rocks carry the memories of dinosaur landscapes and vanished oceans; show evidence of the greening of the planet and the effect of natural forces; and convey clues on climate and energy consumption. The book unearths the most fascinating stories rocks can tell us, not only about our past, but how the past can help imagine the future.
Book Synopsis Nanostructured Carbon Materials for Catalysis by : Philippe Serp
Download or read book Nanostructured Carbon Materials for Catalysis written by Philippe Serp and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We heartily recommend this book to all readers who wish to gain a better understanding of nanostructured carbon materials surface properties and used in catalysis." An-Hui Lu, ChemCatChem There is great interest in using nanostructured carbon materials in catalysis, either as supports for immobilizing active species or as metal-free catalysts due to their unique structural, thermal, chemical, electronic and mechanical properties, and tailorable surface chemistry. This book looks at the structure and properties of different doped and undoped nanocarbons including graphene; fullerenes; nanodiamonds; carbon nanotubes and nanofibers; their synthesis and modification to produce catalysts. Special attention is paid to adsorption, as it impacts the application of these materials in various industrially relevant catalytic reactions discussed herein, in addition to photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. Written by leading experts in the area, this is the first book to provide a comprehensive view of the subject for the catalysis community.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive overview of detonation nanodiamond particles produced by detonation of carbon-containing explosives, this book discusses the technology of synthesis and the effect of various technological parameters on the structure and physicochemical properties of nanodiamonds. It explores the possibilities of targeted chemical modification of the surface, describes methods of structural modification of nanodiamonds aimed at obtaining nanographite, analyzes the various methods employed in studies of nanodiamonds as a carbon nanostructure, and suggests and explores at length the potential of nanodiamond application in technology and medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maturation of nanotechnology has revealed it to be a unique and distinct discipline rather than a specialization within a larger field. Its textbook cannot afford to be a chemistry, physics, or engineering text focused on nano. It must be an integrated, multidisciplinary, and specifically nano textbook. The archetype of the modern nano textbook

Book excerpt: TERMINAL BREACH The President of the United States is awakened in the middle of the night by the two words he prayed he would never hear—terminal breach. An unknown invader—code name GRAY WOLF— commandeers a nuclear missile silo in North Dakota and threatens to launch a Minuteman III ICBM. The President’s only containment option is to obliterate the Midwest nuclear arsenal at a cost of millions of civilian lives. Across the country in Key West, the world-renowned forensic sleuth Dr. Elliot Sumner is pulled into the international crisis moments after he spots a serial killer he had put away for life. Elliott gets a call from the POTUS. He asks Elliott for help; examine a series of bizarre, mutilated corpses found frozen solid in the wilderness. The macabre blood trail may be the only way to identify GRAY WOLF and give the President more options. Setting aside his life-threatening medical condition, Elliott goes to North Dakota. THE CLOCK IS TICKING. Can the most gifted forensic pathologist do what no other man can do? Can Elliott solve the grisly international puzzle before time runs out for the President and the country? Will the launch of a rogue U.S. nuclear missile into the world be averted, or is a nuclear Armageddon the only possible outcome for this unimaginable terminal breach?
