Book Synopsis Skull Beneath the Skin by : Charles R. Forker
Download or read book Skull Beneath the Skin written by Charles R. Forker and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Webster was much possessed by death And saw the skull beneath the skin; And breastless creatures under ground Leaned backward with a lipless grin. These lines from T. S. Eliot’s "Whispers of Immortality” provide Charles R. Forker with the title for the most substantial and detailed examination of John Webster to date; they also identify a major theme--the love-death nexus in Renaissance drama and its special relevance to Webster. Forker summarizes what is known about Webster’s life and analyzes in detail not only the major plays but also the lesser ones. He examines The White Devil, The Duchess of Malfi, and The Devil’s Law-Case in context with the minor and collaborative works, tracing themes, stylistic features, and ideas through the entire Webster canon. One reviewer of the manuscript notes that "Forker is surely unrivalled as an authority on matters Websterian. His book treats Webster with an unhurried fullness and richness rarely accorded even to Shakespeare.” Another calls the book "Splendid. Readable and engaging.”

Book Synopsis The Art of John Webster by : Ralph Berry
Download or read book The Art of John Webster written by Ralph Berry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of John Webster, first published in 1972, is a study of the three extant plays of Webster known to be solely his work. These plays are seen as attempts to achieve in literature the effects of the baroque, a term which related Webster to the larger developments of European art. Their content is analysed in terms of a consistent opposition between evil and the law. The book seeks to re-establish a base for the claims that must be made for Webster as a serious artist. This title will be of interest to students of literature and drama.

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Versification of English Drama, 1561-1642 written by Professor Marina Tarlinskaja and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-09-28 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveying the development and varieties of blank verse in the English playhouses, this book is a natural history of iambic pentameter in English. Marina Tarlinskaja’s statistical analysis of versification focuses on Shakespeare, but places his work in the literary context of the times. Her results offer new ways to think about the dating of plays, the attribution of anonymous texts, and how collaborators divided their task in co-authored dramas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY: Jabez Stone, young farmer, has just been married, and the guests are dancing at his wedding. But Jabez carries a burden, for he knows that, having sold his soul to the Devil, he must, on the stroke of midnight, deliver it up to him. Shortly before twelve Mr. Scratch, lawyer, enters and the company is thunderstruck. Jabez bids his guests begone; he has made his bargain and will pay the price. His bride, however, stands by him, and so will Daniel Webster, who has come for the festivities. Webster takes the case. But Scratch is a lawyer himself and out-argues the statesman. Webster demands a jury of real Americans, living or dead. Very well, agrees the Devil, he shall have them, and ghosts appear. Webster thunders, but to no avail, and at last realizing Scratch can better him on technical grounds, he changes his tactics and appeals to the ghostly jury, men who have retained some love of country. Rising to the height of his powers, Webster performs the miracle of winning a verdict of Not Guilty.
Book Synopsis John Webster, Renaissance Dramatist by : David Coleman
Download or read book John Webster, Renaissance Dramatist written by David Coleman and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transgressive and darkly brilliant, the drama of John Webster has long been recognised as one of the crowning glories of the English Renaissance. But this apparently idiosyncratic individual, fascinated by insanity, corruption, and the macabre, was also a successful businessman, involved in trade networks beyond the theatre, and writing most of his plays in apparently amicable collaboration with a host of other dramatists. Such is the enigma of John Webster; caricatured as a pessimist obsessed with morbidity and death, Webster's true significance lies in his ability to perceive that the darkness at the heart of humanity must co-exist with the routine and the social interaction of everyday life. John Webster, Renaissance Dramatist locates Webster's remarkable plays within the context of the culture from which they sprang. Examining the uncertain political, religious, and economic climate of Jacobean London, this book offers a guide to one of the most distinctive, yet most elusive, voices of Renaissance England. Introducing readers to both the great tragedies, The Duchess of Malfi and The White Devil, and the lesser-known works, this book explains why Webster has fascinated and horrified generations of critics and theatregoers, and argues that the relevance and resonance of Webster's drama continues to grow.
