Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of the Ontario High School Among the topics that will require discussion are the evolution of the present curriculum, the financial support and various steps leading to the present division of the burden, the qualifications and training of teachers as well as the pedagogical methods, equip ment and buildings. Among the questions to be answered are How and when did grammar schools become high schools? When and under what influences did secondary schools become co educational? When was the scheme of written examinations adopted, and what has been the influence of this? When and why were collegiate institutes established? Occasional references will be made to the movements in Europe and the United States, which appear to have influenced opinion in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontario High School History of England Climate. - Father Ocean, it has been said, has a bias toward England. The in uence of the warm winds sweeping across the Atlantic to her shores brings a mild climate to latitudes that in America are Arctic. It is strange to think that London is in the same latitude as parts of Hudson Bay. England rarely has severe cold. The average difference of temperature between the warm est and the coldest months of the year is not more - than twenty-five degrees, and changes in the seasons are so slight that her people can live an outdoor life throughout the year. There is, for instance, no month when rowing ceases on the Thames or when frost wholly forbids plough ing. Winds are stronger and more rain falls in England than in the adjacent regions of the continent. Charles II, who had dwelt in many lands, said that the best climate was one which permitted men to be abroad with pleasure, or at least without trouble and inconvenience, for the most days of the year and the most hours of the day. This condition, he thought, vprevailed in England more than in any other country in Europe, and without doubt it has helped to make the English an active race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ontario High School Reader It is not intended that the pupil shall master the chapter on the principles before beginning to read the selections; he should become familiar with each topic as it is illustrated in the lesson. In dealing with each lesson the teacher should first ascertain the elements of vocal expression that it best exemplifies. He should then discuss these elements with the pupils, using the necessary paragraphs of the Introduction, and such black-board exercises as he may deem necessary, until he is satisfied that the pupils are ready to undertake the study Of the selection. At the oral reading the pupils should be able to show their mastery of the principles thus taught. Toward the close of the course, they will naturally read connectedly the various sections of the Introduction, in order to obtain a comprehensive and systematic view of the principles. To secure good reading, systematic drill on the exercises in Vowel Sounds and in Articulation is also necessary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Establishment of Schools and Colleges, in Ontario, Vol. 3: 1792-1910 I have devoted a good deal of space in this Volume to a general and historical account of the various Colleges and Universities in this Province, and have specified the date of their establishment. To the University of King's College, the first among the most noted of these Institutions, I have given a good deal of attention, not only on account of its peculiar origin, but also of its Parliamentary record during successive years, which reach back to 1829. So large a space in the public mind had the subject of King's College occupied in these early days that I have thought it well to prepare a somewhat extended sketch of that Institution, which I have named "The University of King's College and its Vicissitudes." To the long and acrimonious agitation which took place on King's College questions is due the movement of the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches to found Colleges of their own, so that their youth would not have to depend for their higher education upon an Institution wholly managed by the Church of England. The Methodists therefore obtained a Royal Charter for an Academy at Cobourg, which shortly afterwards became a College and University. The Presbyterian Church of Scotland also obtained a Royal Charter to found Queen's College and University at Kingston. For each of the other Universities established in more peaceable times, and for the various Theological Colleges, I have collected sufficient material to enable me to give a fairly full and interesting description of them. From material which has been furnished me, I have inserted a very complete account of the means employed in the Normal and Model Schools to prepare the various grades of Teachers for their highly important work. The subjects of Technical and Industrial Education, in their more elaborate and popular forms, have of late years received a great deal of practical attention. The testimony borne to their intrinsic value in a new country like Canada, by the various parties who were consulted on the subject by the Royal Commission, was both convincing and conclusive. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Establishment of Schools and Colleges in Ontario, 1792-1910, Vol. 1 In order to ascertain how, and to what extent, the various Cities, Towns, Villages and Townships in the Province had availed themselves of the provisions of the several Grammar, Public and Separate Schools Acts which had been passed by the Legislature of the Province from 1807 to 1871, inclusive, I issued a Circular in July, 1909, to the Boards of Trustees of these several classes of Schools to send me for insertion in a special Historical Volume on the "Establishment of Schools and Colleges in Ontario," a brief sketch of the establishment of Schools in their localities. Owing to various causes, and chiefly to the absence of definite documentary information on the subject, due, in a great measure, to the death of the "oldest inhabitant," (Trustee, or Teacher, etcetera), or other causes, I found it very difficult to obtain the desired information. After repeated applications in several cases, the sketches asked for were obtained, more or less curtailed, owing to one, or other, of the causes mentioned. However, I am very happy to be able to state that, with very few exceptions, I have been able to secure more, or less, brief sketches of the establishment of the Grammar and Public Schools in most of the Cities, Towns, Villages and Townships of the Province. In the years to come I felt that these sketches would be of great educational interest and value, as showing under what often very discouraging and disheartening circumstances local Schools of the various kinds were established, - Private in many cases at first, then Subscription and Rate-bill Schools and, at length, after a prolonged contest at the yearly meetings of the Ratepayers in each locality on the subject, the principle of Free Schools triumphed, and was finally embodied in Doctor Ryerson's comprehensive School Act of 1871. The District Grammar Schools were the first kind of School authorized by law under the Act on that subject which was passed in 1807. The Law relating to Public Common Schools was not passed until 1816, so that Private Schools were the first that prevailed, then "Subscription," and afterwards the "Rate-bill" Schools were practically the ones in operation until 1850, when the Reverend Doctor Ryerson, as Chief Superintendent of Education, prepared a School Bill, - general in scope and object and largely financial in its character, - which was passed by the Legislature of Upper Canada in that year. The Separate Schools which were in operation in those days were authorized by law as early as in 1841. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preparation of Teachers in Ontario and the United States In Ontario extensive provision is made for the preparation of teachers. Every position in the schools, from Kindergarten to University, must be filled by a trained teacher if such is available, and no one can receive a permanent certificate as a teacher Without Scholarship, pedagogical training, and experience. The academic and professional courses are distinctly separated; the professional training being acquired in special schools, after the acquisition of academic knowledge in the High Schools or Universities. Teachers of different qualifications are required for the various grades of schools, and hence there have been established three types of training schools for teachers; the Provincial Model Schools, the Provincial Normal Schools, and the Faculties of Education in the University of Toronto and in Queen's University, Kingston. In the High Schools, special courses are provided for those who are seeking to enter upon the work of teaching. Students who desire to attend a Model School must pass the examination known as Entrance to Model Schools, at the end of a two years' course. Those who wish to attend a' Normal School must Com plete this course and continue for two years longer, when they must pass the Entrance to Normal School examination. A further course Of two years prepares them for the Entrance to Faculty examination. There is still another way in which a student may proceed in his preparation; he may take the matriculation course in the High School and secure a degree in Arts from a University after an attendance of four years. This degree will admit him to the Faculty of Education. He may have specialized during his University career, and then upon graduating from the Faculty of Education, he may secure a Specialist professional certificate. A' holder of such a certificate usually becomes a teacher in a High School or Collegiate Institute. Prospective teachers who attend the Universities take their courses in Arts with students who will enter other professions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ontario High School Geometry Theoretical While the theoretical course is complete in itself, it is assumed that its study has been preceded by the usual course in drawing and measurement. A considerable number of practical problems are given in the exercises. These should be worked out carefully, and, in fact, all diagrams should be accurately and neatly made. The book contains an abundant supply of carefully selected and graded exercises. Those given in sets throughout the Books will be found suitable for the work of average classes, and just about sufficient in number to fix the subject-matter of the propositions in the minds of the pupils. All the problems contained in the miscellaneous collections at the ends of the Books could be worked through by a few of the best pupils only, and should be used also by the teachers as a store from which to draw suitable material for review purposes from time to time.
