Book excerpt: At the present time, 28 aluminum and 728 are used in applications in which river water attains temperatures as high as about 180 deg F. The 2S is aluminum of commercial purity, and the 72S is a high-purity aluminum-base alloy containing 1 per cent zinc. Both of these materials are relatively weak at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures. The objective of the present work was the development of aluminum-base alloys which had higher load-carrying capacities at all temperatures up to 600 deg F. without an appreciable sacrifice in resistance to corrosion by water at elevated temperatures and also without an appreciable increase in thermal neutron cross-section value. Accordingly, the work was divided into two phases. The first dealt with the development of alloys having better load-carrying capacity, and the second was concerned with the effects of temperature on the corrosion resistance of the experimental and some commercial alloys in water. The first phase is described in Section I of the report, and the second in Section II of the report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnesium is the lightest of all the metals and the sixth most abundant on Earth. Magnesium is ductile and the most machinable of all the metals. Magnesium alloy developments have traditionally been driven by requirements for lightweight materials to operate under increasingly demanding conditions (magnesium alloy castings, wrought products, powder metallurgy components, office equipment, nuclear applications, flares, sacrificial anodes for the protection of other metals, flash photography and tools). The biggest potential market for magnesium alloys is in the automotive industry. In recent years new magnesium alloys have demonstrated a superior corrosion resistance for aerospace and specialty applications. Considering the information above, special issues on magnesium alloys are exposed in this book: casting technology; surface modification of some special Mg alloys; protective carbon coatings on magnesium alloys; fatigue cracking behaviors of cast magnesium alloys and also, magnesium alloys biocompatibility as degradable implant materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnesium alloys with their unique physical and chemical properties are important candidates for many modern engineering applications. Their density, being the lowest of all structural metals, makes them the primary choice in global attempts aimed at reducing the weight of transportation vehicles. However, magnesium also creates challenges at certain stages of raw alloy melting, fabrication of net-shape components and their service. The first one is caused by very high affinity of magnesium to oxygen, which requires protective atmospheres increasing manufacturing cost and heavily contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. The second challenge relates to very high corrosivity of liquid magnesium towards materials it contacts. This imposes restrictions on the selection of materials used to contain, transfer or process molten magnesium during manufacturing operations. A mixture of unique benefits and serious challenges of magnesium alloys in solid and liquid states described here makes the book very useful for a broad audience of scientists and engineers from academia and industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium (Mg) alloys, surface modification is applied in an attempt to produce a corrosion resistant barrier. In this chapter, a new method to deposit aluminum (Al) film on a Mg alloy surface is demonstrated. Electrodeposition of Al on AZ91D Mg alloy, using an acidic aluminum chloride–1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ionic liquid (AlCl3–EMIC), has been shown to be feasible. The existence of Al coating can cause a substantial increase in corrosion resistance, reducing the susceptibility of Mg alloy to aqueous corrosion. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that Al coating leads to an increase in the polarization resistance of a bare Mg alloy by one order of magnitude in 3.5wt% NaCl solution. Furthermore, the potentiodynamic polarization results show that Al-coated Mg alloy can be passivated, and a wider passive region with a lower passive current density can be obtained if the Al is electrodeposited at a lower applied current or a low cathodic overpotential. The passivity of the co-deposited Al/Zn film is slightly inferior to that of the pure Al coating.

Book excerpt: An Aluminum-18 weight percent Magnesium alloy was prepared by casting and then warm rolling at 425C to 94% true strain. This alloy was compression tested at six strain rates from 0.00664 per minute to 0.332 per minute and at eight temperatures ranging from 25C to 425C. The most significant result is that a warm rolled Aluminum-18 weight percent Magnesium alloy can exhibit compressive strengths in excess of 95 ksi, in a material of 10% lower density than commercial high strength Aluminum alloys. Book excerpt: Al-Mg 5xxx alloys are desirable in a wide array of structural applications that require a weldable alloy with good corrosion resistance. However, mechanical property changes may result from intermediate temperature exposures. Commercially available 5xxx alloy plates have been thermally treated up to 10,000 hrs. (13 months) at temperatures of 60°C, 70°C, 80°C, 100°C, and 175°C. Room temperature hardness, tension and fatigue crack growth tests have been completed to determine changes in mechanical properties in the LT orientation. Longitudinal splitting in the short-transverse (ST) direction has been observed during fatigue after sufficient time and temperature exposure combinations. Fracture and fatigue testing has additionally been employed on long-time sensitized material. The evolution of properties (i.e. mechanical/fracture/fatigue, corrosion resistance, etc.) and microstructures (e.g. grain boundary segregation, grain boundary precipitation, etc.) with thermal exposure at these (and lower) temperatures has significant practical implications for various structural applications. The effects of thermal remediation treatments are also described.

Book excerpt: Cast ingots of three Al-Mg alloys, containing 7% Mg, 15% Mg, and 19% Mg, Were obtained from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation Center for Technology. Billets were machined from these castings and upset forged at .9% of either the solvus or eutectic temperature, as appropriate, to a true strain of 1.5. These alloys were then evaluated by compressive stress-strain testing at various temperatures and strain rates to determine both the ambient and elevated temperature characteristics.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results and analysis of a factorial experiment undertaken to determine the corrosivity of variously protected magnesium alloys when exposed to 5 and 20 percent salt fog environments. The investigation considers two lots of magnesium sand castings and one lot of magnesium sheet alloy, each given two preparatory chemical pretreatments and coated with three different batches of a thermosetting epoxy resin coating using two methods of application. For cast magnesium alloy, corrosion was noted to vary widely within and between the alloy lots investigated and their pretreatments. The relative corrosivity of the exposure environments on the alloy lots was found to depend upon the pretreatment used. For the more corrosion resistant pretreatment, 20 percent salt fog was substantially more corrosive than 5 percent. For the less effective pretreatment, no significant difference in the corrosivity of the two salt fog environments was apparent. For sheet magnesium alloy, corrosion was significantly less extensive and less variable than for cast alloy in both exposure environments. Regardless of the pretreatments, coatings used, and methods of application, 20 percent salt fog was found substantially more corrosive than 5 percent. (Author).
