Book excerpt: Resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology was developed for the recovery of valuable metals from high volumes of low grade pulps, as is the case with gold processing. More recently, the application of this technology has been evaluated for the recovery of soluble losses of valuable metals from solid residues in base metal plants. For this type of application, the RIP process will improve overall plant recoveries, especially where solid- liquid separation proves difficult as a result of poor filterability or settling characteristics of the solids. An added benefit of the RIP process is a reduction in the environmental impact of the solid residues contaminated with entrained base metals from the plant. Mintek investigated the metallurgical and economic feasibility of using RIP technology for the recovery of soluble cobalt, nickel and copper from thickener underflows on behalf of Anglovaal Mining. Laboratory and mini- plant investigations included the recovery of copper with RIP, followed by simultaneous nickel and cobalt recovery using a second RIP circuit. Recovery of copper, nickel and cobalt in a single RIP circuit was also investigated.

Book excerpt: Conventional hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of uranium involve leaching, followed by solid-liquid separation and then recovery from solution by ion exchange or chemical precipitation. Although researchers have attempted since the 1950s to develop processes that eliminate the solid-liquid separation step by using resin-in-pulp (RIP) for the recovery step, they have succeeded in doing this only for 'thin' pulps. This is a consequence of the twin difficulties of resin-pulp separation and resin degradation in 'high-density' slurries. Various methods of resin-in-pulp agitation, transport, and separation were tested at Mintek, and the results clearly indicated that air agitation, airlifts, and sieve bends, respectively, are the best solutions. This paper describes the systematic pilot-scale study on which these conclusions are based, and indicates that significant cost benefits could result when this technology is applied to the recovery of dissolved species such as gold and uranium from leach pulps.

However, this technology can also be applied to the recovery of soluble metals from solid residues on base metal plants. Applications for the RIP process include the scavenging of valuable metals from leach and precipitation residues, especially where the solids have poor filterability of settling characteristics. The RIP process will improve overall plant recoveries, and it may be possible to decrease the filter duties of the degree of washing on the filters. In addition, the barren stream from the RIP operation may reduce any environmental impact significantly.^L^LBilliton Process Research (BPR) commissioned Mintek to investigate the metallurgical and economic feasibility of a resin-in-pulp process for the recovery of copper from bioleach counter-current decantation (CCD) underflows. Batch laboratory testwork and a continuous mini-plant campaign was conducted in order to optimise the process parameters. The results were used to conduct a preliminary sizing and costing study, in order to evaluate the economic viability of the RIP technology for this application.
