Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis was to develop a low cost autonomous flight control system for small unmanned aerial vehicles with the aim to support collaborative systems. A low cost hardware solution was achieved by careful selection of sensors, integration of hardware subsystems, and the use of new microcontroller technologies. Flight control algorithms to guide a vehicle though waypoint based flight paths and loiter about a point were implemented using direction fields. A hardware in the loop simulator was developed to ensure proper operation of all hardware and software components prior to flight testing. The resulting flight control system achieved stable and accurate flight while reducing the total system cost to less than $250.

Book excerpt: The Advanced Navigation Technology (ANT) Center at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) conducts extensive research in advanced guidance, navigation, and control to exploit the full potential of autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). The research in this thesis describes a UAV research platform developed to support the ANT Center?s goals. This platform is now the bedrock for UAV simulation and local flight test at AFIT. The research has three major components. The first component is development of a physical, inertial, and aerodynamic model representing an existing aircraft. A systematic analysis of the airframe leads to a complete geometric, inertial, and aerodynamic representation. The airframe analysis included the use of USAF Digital Datcom, an aerodynamic modeling software tool. Second is the development and implementation of a non-linear, six degree of freedom simulation, employing the developed model. Constructed in Matlab/SIMULINK, the simulation enables control design and pre-flight analysis through out the entire flight envelope. Detailed post-flight analysis was also performed in Matlab/SIMULINK. Additionally, Hardware in the Loop benchmark simulation was constructed and used for initial flight test plans as well as test team training. The third and final component of the research was an experimental flight test program. Both open loop and autonomous flights were conducted. Openloop flights characterized the aircraft dynamics for comparison with the Matlab simulation results. Autonomous flights tuned the autopilot controller through waypoint tracking in preparation for future advanced navigation research and provided data for Hardware in the Loop simulation validation. This report, along with other significant legacy documentation and procedures, builds the foundation from which future AFIT and ANT Center UAV simulations and flight tests are based.

Book excerpt: Over the last years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gradually become a more efficient alternative to manned aircraft, and at present, they are being deployed in a broad spectrum of both military as well as civilian missions. This has led to an unprecedented market expansion with new challenges for the aeronautical industry, and as a result, it has created a need to implement the latest design tools in order to achieve faster idea-to-market times and higher product performance. As a complex engineering product, UAVs are comprised of numerous sub-systems with intricate synergies and hidden dependencies. To this end, Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is a method that can identify systems with better performance through the concurrent consideration of several engineering disciplines under a common framework. Nevertheless, there are still many limitations in MDO, and to this date, some of the most critical gaps can be found in the disciplinary modeling, in the analysis capabilities, and in the organizational integration of the method. As an aeronautical product, UAVs are also expected to work together with other systems and to perform in various operating environments. In this respect, System of Systems (SoS) models enable the exploration of design interactions in various missions, and hence, they allow decision makers to identify capabilities that are beyond those of each individual system. As expected, this significantly more complex formulation raises new challenges regarding the decomposition of the problem, while at the same time, it sets further requirements in terms of analyses and mission simulation. In this light, this thesis focuses on the design optimization of UAVs by enhancing the current MDO capabilities and by exploring the use of SoS models. Two literature reviews serve as the basis for identifying the gaps and trends in the field, and in turn, five case studies try to address them by proposing a set of expansions. On the whole, the problem is approached from a technical as well as an organizational point of view, and thus, this research aims to propose solutions that can lead to better performance and that are also meaningful to the Product Development Process (PDP). Having established the above foundation, this work delves firstly into MDO, and more specifically, it presents a framework that has been enhanced with further system models and analysis capabilities, efficient computing solutions, and data visualization tools. At a secondary level, this work addresses the topic of SoS, and in particular, it presents a multi-level decomposition strategy, multi-fidelity disciplinary models, and a mission simulation module. Overall, this thesis presents quantitative data which aim to illustrate the benefits of design optimization on the performance of UAVs, and it concludes with a qualitative assessment of the effects that the proposed methods and tools can have on both the PDP and the organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research started at AUS in 2005. Linear and nonlinear aircraft models and system identification of the aircraft system were developed to design flight control laws. Proportional-integral-derivative control laws as well as fuzzy logic supervisory control for fixed wing autopilots in cruise mode were developed. Hardware in the loop for UAV flight simulation was also developed. The current work focuses on designing control laws for takeoff, cruise, and landing, and conducting flight test verification of these law. Implementation of control laws for different flight modes need further study in switching between flight modes. A hybrid control scheme, which acts as a supervisory control for coordinating the conventional control laws for each flight mode is proposed. This involves the usage of a state-machine block to coordinate the transition of each of the flight modes. A way of using fuzzy logic control to map the gain values for different flight equilibrium states is developed and simulated in this work. The contributions of this thesis are the development of digital flight control system software and hardware"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "In its effort to develop unmanned autonomous systems research capabilities, the College of Engineering is adding a rotary wing UAV to its research activities. The current thesis goal is to use the Maxi Joker 3 commercially-off-the-shelf (COTS) electric RC helicopter as a platform and fit it with a commercial autopilot system to serve as a benchmark for future AUS rotary wing in-house autopilot development. To achieve this goal, the thesis develops the helicopter flight simulator with added hardware-in-the-loop simulation capabilities to aid the rapid prototyping of flight control laws and the guidance algorithms. Rigorous flight dynamics simulation model was implemented with Matlab/Simulink environment. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation was carried out using the freescale MPC555 32 bits microcontroller based autopilot hardware developed in house. Flight tests data was used to refine the dynamics models and improve the simulation. The thesis developed autopilot for aircraft attitude control for hover flight conditions. The control lows are based on PID successive loop closure architecture using the linearized helicopter model. The tuned gains were simulated using the nonlinear model. The in house autopilot hardware-in-the- loop- simulation showed promising results compared with flight test data collected with the Micropilot commercial autopilot test results. Later, the in house autopilot was fitted to the MaxiJocker 3 aircraft for flight test evaluation. Limited flight test data showed excellent results compared with the Micropilot commercial autopilot test results."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The importance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to current and future military operations cannot be understated. This rapidly developing field requires the ability to quickly develop and evaluate advanced control concepts. The FROG UAV serves as a test bed for advanced control and sensor projects at the Naval Postgraduate School. Previous control system projects have made use of a low performance electromechanical autopilot onboard the UAV. This autopilot imposed significant limitations on the responsiveness of the FROG. This project developed and tested an off board digital flight control system for use in lieu of the previous electromechanical device. The digital flight controller was developed using the Matrixx rapid prototyping system and a previously validated dynamic model of the FROG. Surrogate flight control servo actuators were characterized in the laboratory and added to the plant model. Classic inner/ outer loop controllers were developed for yaw damping and speed, altitude and heading control. The system was then successfully demonstrated%ted with hardware in the loop in the lab. The FROG was then instrumented and a command uplink latency of 170 MS was discovered. This introduced excessive phase lag into the system, which drove the flight controllers unstable. An alternate serial uplink method was developed and tested which reduced the command latency to 76 MS however the remaining phase lag resulted in limit cycle oscillation. Laboratory tests indicated that the current flight controller could withstand a maximum of 50 MS command path delay; without modification.

Book excerpt: This book discusses state estimation and control procedures for a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The authors consider the use of robust adaptive Kalman filter algorithms and demonstrate their advantages over the optimal Kalman filter in the context of the difficult and varied environments in which UAVs may be employed. Fault detection and isolation (FDI) and data fusion for UAV air-data systems are also investigated, and control algorithms, including the classical, optimal, and fuzzy controllers, are given for the UAV. The performance of different control methods is investigated and the results compared. State Estimation and Control of Low-Cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicles covers all the important issues for designing a guidance, navigation and control (GNC) system of a low-cost UAV. It proposes significant new approaches that can be exploited by GNC system designers in the future and also reviews the current literature. The state estimation, control and FDI methods are illustrated by examples and MATLAB® simulations. State Estimation and Control of Low-Cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will be of interest to both researchers in academia and professional engineers in the aerospace industry. Graduate students may also find it useful, and some sections are suitable for an undergraduate readership.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Unmanned vehicles, both ground and aerial, have become prevalent in recent years. The research community has different needs than the industrial community when designing a finalized unmanned system since the vehicle, the sensors and the control design are dynamic and change frequently as new ideas are developed and implemented. Current autopilot hardware, which is available as on-the-market products and proposed in research, is sufficient for unmanned systems design. However, this equipment falls short of being able to accommodate the needs of those in the research community who must be able to quickly implement new ideas on a flexible platform. The contribution of this research is the realization of a hardware platform, which provides for rapid implementation of newly developed theory. Rapid implementation is gained by providing for software development from within the Simulink environment and utilizing previously unrealized flexibility in sensor selection. In addition to the development of the hardware platform, research was performed within Simulink's System Generator environment in order to complement the hardware. The software produced consists of a user template that integrates to the selected hardware. The template creates a user friendly environment, which provides the end user the capability to develop software algorithms from within the Simulink environment. This capability facilitates the final step of full hardware implementation. The major novelty of the research was the overall FPGA based autopilot design. The approach provided flexibility, functionality and generality. The approach is also suitable for and applicable to the design of multiple platforms. This research yielded a first time approach to the development of an unmanned systems autopilot platform by utilizing: -Development of programmable voltage level digital Input/Output (I/O), ports, -Utilization of Field Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAA), -Hardware capabilities to allow for integration with full computer systems, -A full Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), implementation, -Full integration of the hardware within Simulink's System Generator Toolbox.
