Book Synopsis Globalization and Poverty by : Ann Harrison
Download or read book Globalization and Poverty written by Ann Harrison and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the percentage of the world’s population living on less than a dollar a day has been cut in half. How much of that improvement is because of—or in spite of—globalization? While anti-globalization activists mount loud critiques and the media report breathlessly on globalization’s perils and promises, economists have largely remained silent, in part because of an entrenched institutional divide between those who study poverty and those who study trade and finance. Globalization and Poverty bridges that gap, bringing together experts on both international trade and poverty to provide a detailed view of the effects of globalization on the poor in developing nations, answering such questions as: Do lower import tariffs improve the lives of the poor? Has increased financial integration led to more or less poverty? How have the poor fared during various currency crises? Does food aid hurt or help the poor? Poverty, the contributors show here, has been used as a popular and convenient catchphrase by parties on both sides of the globalization debate to further their respective arguments. Globalization and Poverty provides the more nuanced understanding necessary to move that debate beyond the slogans.

Book Synopsis Aid or Trade - Alternatives for Poverty Reduction? by : Timo Alexander Holthoff
Download or read book Aid or Trade - Alternatives for Poverty Reduction? written by Timo Alexander Holthoff and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,0, University of Göttingen (Institut für Entwicklungsökonomie und Internationale Wirtschaft), course: Master Seminar "Development Aid", language: English, abstract: This paper is based on the debate of "aid vs. trade", two rather antagonistic approaches to development. These different conceptions of development and underdevelopment date back to the competing theories of modernization, dependency and neo-liberal foreign trade theory and are most currently reflected by the discourse of scholars like Jeffrey Sachs vs. William Easterly or Dambisa Moyo. Drawing arguments from both sides, the paper advocates the embracing approach of trade related development assistance called "aid for trade" that was born out of the WTO - Doha negotiations. In a first part, this paper depicts the benefits of free trade in general from a theoretical and empirical point of view. In the second part, it critically examines why these benefits do not materialize in the poorest countries due to internal and external structural barriers. In a subsequent part it analyses if the development concept of "aid for trade" might be a means to overcome some of these obstacles and empower developing countries to engage in more profitable trade. The genesis, objectives, forms and principles of the aid for trade concept are reviewed with regard to their relevance and efficiency in trade-related poverty reduction.

Book Synopsis Aid for Trade and Development by : Dominique Njinkeu
Download or read book Aid for Trade and Development written by Dominique Njinkeu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-24 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following in the wake of the World Trade Organization's engagement with Aid for Trade, this book brings together a range of perspectives around this emerging issue. The collection of articles in this volume presents many of the ideas elaborated through research conducted by International Lawyers and Economists Against Poverty (ILEAP) since 2005 and is intended to provide a basis for further study. Since many of the contributions on aid for trade to date have come from the North, the book looks to deepen the debate by forwarding voices and experiences from the South. The book traces the evolution of Aid for Trade from its beginnings and examines the global architecture, modalities, and costs associated with its implementation. Drawing on lessons from national and regional experiences, this book further explores ways in which Aid for Trade can both move forward and become a real tool for poverty reduction in beneficiary countries.
Download or read book Assessing Aid written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing Aid determines that the effectiveness of aid is not decided by the amount received but rather the institutional and policy environment into which it is accepted. It examines how development assistance can be more effective at reducing global poverty and gives five mainrecommendations for making aid more effective: targeting financial aid to poor countries with good policies and strong economic management; providing policy-based aid to demonstrated reformers; using simpler instruments to transfer resources to countries with sound management; focusing projects oncreating and transmitting knowledge and capacity; and rethinking the internal incentives of aid agencies.
