Book Synopsis Rethinking International Organizations by : Dennis Dijkzeul
Download or read book Rethinking International Organizations written by Dennis Dijkzeul and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of international organizations is attracting growing attention. Most of this attention is highly critical of both the UN system and International NGOs. Sometimes, this criticism lacks depth or reflects insufficient understanding of these organizations, or is based on narrow, and sometimes biased, internal political concerns of a particular country. International relations theory has insufficiently studied the type of linkages that these organizations provide between international decision-making and Northern fundraising on the one hand, and practical action in the South on the other. As a result, current theory too rarely focuses on the inner functioning of these organizations and is unable to explain the deficiencies and negative outcomes of their work. While the authors identify and describe the pathologies of international organizations in, for example, international diplomacy, fundraising, and implementation, they also stress positive elements, such as their intermediary role. The latter, in particular, could form the basis of more efficient and effective policies, in addition to other recent trends, also described in this volume, that hold hope for a stronger functioning of these organizations in the future. This book presents a long overdue empirical and theoretical overview of criticism on and cures for these organizations. It provides a fundamental rethinking of current approaches to the management of international organizations.
Book Synopsis Technological Transformation by : E.F. Byrne
Download or read book Technological Transformation written by E.F. Byrne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophical study of technology has acquired only recently a voice in academic conversation. This situation is due, in part, to the fact that technology obviously impacts on "the real world," whereas the favored stereotype of philosophy allegedly does not. Furthermore, in some circles it was assumed that philosophy ought not impinge on the world. This bias continues today in the form of a general dismissal of the growing area now referred to as "applied philosophy". By contrast, the academic scrutiny of science has for the most part been accepted as legitimate for some 30 years, primarily because it has been conducted in a somewhat ethereal manner. This is, in part, because it was believed that, science being pure, one could think (even philosophically) about science without jeopardizing one's intellectual purity. Since World War II, however, practitioners of the metascientific arts have come to ac knowledge that science also shows signs of having touched down on numerous occasions in what can only be identified as the real world. No longer able to keep this banal truth a secret, purists have sought to defuse its import by stressing the difference between pure and applied science; and, lest science be tainted by contact with the world through its applications, they have devoted additional energy to separating applied science somehow from technology.
Book Synopsis Conference Diplomacy by : Johan Kaufmann
Download or read book Conference Diplomacy written by Johan Kaufmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can a delegation to a conference get its initiative adopted, or another delegation's proposal rejected? How is a conference delegation composed? What is a permanent mission? What effect can an inefficient conference president have? In which way can secretariats of international organizations influence the results of international conferences? The answers to these questions can be found in Johan Kaufmann's path-breaking Conference Diplomacy , originally published in 1968. Conference Diplomacy will be useful to junior and senior diplomats, and to international civil servants. It has found, and will increasingly find, a place in courses on international relations, on negotiations techniques and in teaching for the diplomatic career.
