Book excerpt: This study investigates the determinants of Chinese outward direct investment (ODI) and the extent to which three special explanations (capital market imperfections, special ownership advantages and institutional factors) need to be nested within the general theory of the multinational firm. We test our hypotheses using official Chinese ODI data collected between 1984 and 2001. We find Chinese ODI to be associated with high levels of political risk in, and cultural proximity to, host countries throughout, and with host market size and geographic proximity (1984-1991) and host natural resources endowments (1992-2001). We find strong support for the argument that aspects of the special theory help to explain the behaviour of Chinese multinational enterprises.

Expanding at an average annual rate of more than 10 percent, the Chinese economy is now the second-largest in the world. Globalization is undoubtedly one of the most important drivers behind this extraordinary growth.Globalization is not a one-way process. As Chinese businesses grow and mature, they are increasingly turning to outward direct investment (ODI) to diversify their product portfolios, take advantage of cheaper labor in foreign countries, and claim reliable sources of raw materials.In recent years, several instances of Chinese outward direct investment received wide media attention. Among them were Lenovo Group's purchase of IBM's personal computer division in 2005 and Wanda Group's acquisition of AMC Entertainment in 2012. However, acquisitions of assets by state-owned enterprises in natural resource-rich countries -- especially African countries -- have stirred the most concern.Still, despite the hype, Chinese outward direct investment remains small in relative size. In 2011, China's ODI stock was 1.7 percent of the world's total, or 5.2 percent of the nation's GDP. When measured by direct investment, China is much less globalized than when measured by international trade.Is China's relatively low outward direct investment level justified by economic fundamentals? What are the determinants of Chinese ODI? This paper uses country-level data to analyze the patterns of these investments.

This paper examines and compares the determinants of Chinese and U.S. direct investment around the world. We adopt the cross sectional analysis for the year 2005 and 2006. The basic as well as the improved Sala-i-Martin extreme bound analysis are applied to search for robust determinants. The result suggests that distance, infrastructure facilities and energy reserves are important factors to attract investment from China and U.S. Moreover, institutional factors are not robust determinants for China's outward direct investment, suggesting that Chinese investors do not pay enough attention to institutional risks in their investment.

China's success, however, did not come without some pitfalls: an increasingly complex tax incentive system and growing regional income disparities. Accession to the WTO should broaden China's "opening up" policies and continue FDI's contributions to China's economy in the future.

The present study augments the understanding of the determinants and drivers of Chinese ODI. It reviews the literature on Chinese ODI and analyzes investment by state-owned enterprises (SOE) for the period 2003-2008, focusing specifically on the differences between the determinants of Chinese investment in developed (OECD) and developing (non-OECD) economies. In addition, the study assesses the appropriateness of the general framework used for investigating ODI determinants (Dunning's eclectic paradigm) to analyze the experience of Chinese SOE. The findings indicate that Dunning's eclectic paradigm provides an excellent theoretical framework for analyzing the determinants of Chinese SOE investment in developed countries, and provides a good starting point for analysis of Chinese investment in developing countries. However, Dunning's specification requires refinement for developing countries. This paper finds a distinct difference between the motivations for Chinese SOE investment in developed and developing countries.

Though this has generated considerable interest in the motivations and drivers of Chinese investment abroad, there have been few systematic empirical studies of these questions. This paper performs an econometric analysis of the host country determinants of Chinese outward FDI in the period 2003-2006. The focus is in particular on institutional and natural resource-related determinants, and their interaction. We find that Chinese outward FDI is attracted to large markets, and to countries with a combination of large natural resources and poor institutions. Disaggregation shows that the former effect is related to OECD countries, whereas the latter interaction effect holds for non-OECD countries.

However, the volume of China's OFDI increased rapidly from 2004. There has been an increasing amount of literature on the motivations of China's OFDI, but few studies have focused on its location determinants. The present paper aims to fill this gap in the literature by focusing on two important location factors, natural resources and technology, which are the most important determinants of China's OFDI. We use a large panel dataset comprising 132 countries over the period 1991-2009 and the Tobit as well as the Heckman models to establish the relationship between the two location factors and China's OFDI. The empirical results suggest that although China's OFDI has been driven by the country's desire for a secure supply of natural resources and to attain advanced technology from the developed world, China's technology is also a critical attraction for the host developing economies.
