Book excerpt: The authors report the results of a recent beam dynamics study, motivated by the need to redesign the LCLS photoinjector, that lead to the discovery of a new effective working point for a split RF photoinjector. The authors consider the emittance compensation regime of a space charge beam: by increasing the solenoid strength, the emittance evolution shows a double minimum behavior in the drifting region. If the booster is located where the relative emittance maximum and the envelope waist occur, the second emittance minimum can be shifted to the booster exit and frozen at a very low level (0.3 mm-mrad for a 1 nC flat top bunch), to the extent that the invariant envelope matching conditions are satisfied. Standing Wave Structures or alternatively Traveling Wave Structures embedded in a Long Solenoid are both candidates as booster linac. A careful measurement of the emittance evolution as a function of position in the drifting region is necessary to verify the computation and to determine experimentally the proper position of the booster cavities. The new design study and supporting experimental program under way at the SLAC Gun Test Facility are discussed.

Book excerpt: The design of the Linac Coherent Light Source assumes that a low-emittance, 1-nC, 10-ps beam will be available for injection into the 15-GeV linac. The proposed rf photocathode injector that will provide a 150-MeV beam with rms normalized emittances of 1 [mu]m in both the transverse and longitudinal dimensions is based on a 1.6-cell S-band rf gun that is equipped with an emittance compensating solenoid. The booster accelerator is positioned at the beam waist coinciding with the first emittance maximum and is provided with an accelerating gradient of ≈25 MeV/m, i.e., the ''new working point.'' The uv pulses required for cathode excitation will be generated by tripling the output of a Ti:sapphire laser system consisting of a highly stable cw mode-locked oscillator and two bow-tie amplifiers pumped by a pair of Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers. The large bandwidth of the Ti:sapphire system accommodates the desired temporal pulse shaping. Details of the design and the supporting simulations are presented.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Laser Issues for Electron RF Photoinjectors Workshop by :
Download or read book Proceedings of the Laser Issues for Electron RF Photoinjectors Workshop written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) proposed for SLAC is a SASE FEL designed to generate high brightness, coherent, ultrashort x-ray pulses. The injector of choice is the RF photoinjector, which is capable of producing suitably low emittance electron beams. It is well established that the performance of the SASE FEL depends critically on properties of the electron beam generated by the injector and therefore on the injector laser beam parameters. This workshop was established specifically to provide a forum for discussion of photoinjector laser systems. Laser design requirements and technical challenges common to RF photoinjectors were highlighted and some solutions were explored. This included not only details of laser systems but also those of laser-based diagnostics envisioned for monitoring ultrashort electron microbunches on a single shot basis. Sixty-one registrants representing twenty-three institutions from Italy, Germany, Japan and the United States attended. The program listing shows that the twenty-six workshop presentations were grouped into the following three sessions: Session A--Laser Systems and Performance Issues; Session B--Single Pulse and Pulse Train Shaping; and Session C--Diagnostics, Damage and Other Novelties.

Download or read book The Linac Coherent Light Source Photo-Injector Overview and Some Design Details written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a SASE free electron laser using the last 1/3 of the SLAC two mile linac to produce 1.5 to 15 angstrom x-rays in a 100 meter long undulator for use in a variety of x-ray science experiments. In order to satisfy the demanding electron beam requirements, a new 135 MeV photo-injector will be built in an existing, off-axis vault at the 2/3 point of the main linac. The injector accelerator consists of a BNL/SLAC/UCLA 1.6 cell S-band gun followed by two 3-meter long SLAC accelerator sections. The 6MeV beam from the gun is matched into the first accelerator section and accelerated to 135 MeV before injection onto the main linac axis with a 35 degree bend. Several modifications to the rf gun, linac and beamline as well as the inclusion of several diagnostics have been incorporated into the injector design to achieve the required 1.2 micron projected emittance at a charge of 1 nC. In addition, an inverse free electron laser, the laser heater, will be used to increase the uncorrelated energy spread to suppress coherent synchrotron radiation and longitudinal space charge instabilities in the main accelerator and bunch compressors. The configuration and function of the major injector components will be described.

Download or read book The Physics of High Brightness Beams written by Jamie Rosenzweig and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 1999 ICFA workshop on the physics of high brightness beams. The workshop took a snapshot in time of a fast moving, interdisciplinary field driven by advanced applications such as high gradient, high energy physics linear colliders, high gain free electron lasers, heavy ion fusion, and transmutation of nuclear materials. While the field of high brightness beam physics has traditionally been divided into disparate electron and heavy ion communities, the workshop brought the two types of researchers together, so that a sharing of insights and methods could be achieved. Thus, this book represents a unifying step in the development of the diverse fascinating discipline of high brightness beam physics, with its challenges rooted in collective, nonlinear particle motion and ultra-high electromagnetic energy density.

Book Synopsis Superconducting RF Injector for High-Power Free Electron Lasers by :
Download or read book Superconducting RF Injector for High-Power Free Electron Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key technology issue on the path to high-power FEL operation is the demonstration of reliable, high-brightness, photo-cathode injector operation. The physics and engineering conceptual design of a high-current superconducting RF injector has been completed and will be presented. The system, which is an outgrowth of the existing injector on the Jefferson Lab IRFEL[1], consists of an integrated room temperature DC photocathode gun and a 500 MHz superconducting RF accelerator. The device is compact and produces high-brightness beams. After DC acceleration in the gun, emittance compensation techniques are utilized to reduce the rms normalized emittance by over a factor of two to (approximately)2-1/4 mm-mrad at the output of the RF accelerator. The design is based upon the existing geometry of the Jefferson Lab DC gun and will be capable of operation at 100 mA average beam current.
