Book excerpt: Documents the increasing aridity of the transitional zone between the full desert of the Sahara and the open grassland of western Africa, the border moving 200-300 kilometers south during a brief two and half centuries; and the political and economic changes as pastoral nomads of the desert edge followed the shift south, and the agricultural communities in their way had to abandon their villages or face subjugation. Book excerpt: Rome's desert frontier was one where the Empire faced few dangers, for here relations were generally based on a mutual interest in trade across the frontier. Yet when Rome did clash with desert peoples, particularly those of Syria and Arabia, the mobility, fighting skills and ability to withdraw into an arid wilderness often gave the Arabs, Berbers and Sudanese an extra edge. This fascinating volume by David Nicolle explores the history and armies of Rome's enemies of the desert frontier. The author's fine text is accompanied by a wealth of illustrations and photographs, including eight stunning full page colour plates by Angus McBride.

Book excerpt: The question of the Italian colonies played an important part in the breakdown of Allied cooperation after the Second World War. Britain and the United States were closely involved in this question, yet their respective roles have not received the detailed historical attention which they merit. Based on extensive research in British and American archives, this book will seek to analyse British and US policy on this question within its Cold War context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frontier Town Abandoned Theme Park Then and Now is a coffee table style book that documents the conception, life, and closing of the beloved Adirondack Mountain's historically based theme park called "Frontier Town." With America being romanced by Western movies on the big screen and television, the country was ready for a western themed amusement park. Arthur Bensen, Edward Ovensen and Magnus Anderson, three Long Island Norwegian-American friends came together to open America's first western themed amusement park located in North Hudson, NY yet it was set to the traditions of the 1800's old west while offering local trade crafts and wares. The first year it drew over 40,000 visitors with little advertising. Over the next 45 years the park continued to host millions of visitors, and averaged over 300 employees and volunteers per season. The park included a collection of genuine log buildings which formed a traditional frontier town, a professional rodeo arena, a historical industrial section that included a grist mill, saw mill, forge, and ice house. It also included a traditional Native American village, animals, stage coach rides, and a fort with a full cavalry. This book documents the history of Frontier Town through professional photography as well as visitor's snapshots that are combined with historical storytelling that give the reader a feel of what Frontier Town was all about! Tammy Whitty-Brown's gift of gab and historical connections combined with her storytelling abilities and Jennifer Renee ST.Pierre's equestrian background and photography are showcased with their love of Adirondack history

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During China's last dynasty, the Qing (1644-1911), the empire's remote, bleak, and politically insignificant Southwest rose to become a strategically vital area. This study of the imperial government's handling of the southwestern frontier illuminates issues of considerable importance in Chinese history and foreign relations: Sichuan's rise as a key strategic area in relation to the complicated struggle between the Zunghar Mongols and China over Tibet, Sichuan's neighbor to the west, and consequent developments in governance and taxation of the area. Through analysis of government documents, gazetteers, and private accounts, Yingcong Dai explores the intersections of political and social history, arguing that imperial strategy toward the southwestern frontier was pivotal in changing Sichuan's socioeconomic landscape. Government policies resulted in light taxation, immigration into Sichuan, and a military market for local products, thus altering Sichuan but ironically contributing toward the eventual demise of the Qing. Dai's detailed, objective analysis of China's historical relationship with Tibet will be useful for readers seeking to understand debates concerning Tibet's sovereignty, Tibetan theocratic government, and the political dimension of the system of incarnate Tibetan lamas (of which the Dalai Lama is one).
