Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 23, 1985, the bombing of Air India Flight 182 killed 329 people, most of them Canadians. Today this pivotal event in Canada’s history is hazily remembered, yet certain interests have shaped how the tragedy is woven into public memory, and even exploited to advance a strategic national narrative. Remembering Air India insists that we “remember Air India otherwise.” This collection investigates the Air India bombing and its implications for current debates about racism, terrorism, and citizenship. Drawing together academic analysis, testimony, visual arts, and creative writing, this innovative volume tenders a new public record of the bombing, one that shows how important creative responses are for deepening our understanding of the event and its aftermath. Book Synopsis The Dismantling of India by : TJS George
Download or read book The Dismantling of India written by TJS George and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1947, two months after Independence, TJS George arrived in Bombay. He was nineteen years old, with a degree in English Literature. He sent out job applications––to the Air Force and to the city's English-language newspapers. Only one organization cared to reply, The Free Press Journal. The editor was known to hire anyone who asked for a job, but most new hires were sacked in a fortnight. George was put on the news desk as a sub-editor and eventually became an assistant editor. In Patna, as editor of The Searchlight, he was arrested by the chief minister for sedition. He spent three weeks in Hazaribagh Central Jail. In Hong Kong, he worked for the Far Eastern Economic Review as regional editor; in New York he was a writer for the United Nations population division; and, back in Hong Kong, in 1975, he founded Asiaweek. Six years later, he returned to India and settled in Bangalore. He began a column for Indian Express that ran without a break for twenty-five years, until 2022. His seventy-five years of journalism, concurrent with India's development as an independent nation, make for a unique understanding of events and personalities. Acclaimed for his widely historical, pan-Asian vision, George brings this far-flung experience to a compulsively readable new book, The Dismantling of India. It is the story of India told in 35 concise biographies, beginning with Jamsetji Tata and ending with Narendra Modi.

Book Synopsis Indian Business Case Studies Volume I by : Sandeep Pachpande
Download or read book Indian Business Case Studies Volume I written by Sandeep Pachpande and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been decades since many business schools outside India adopted the case study methodology for teaching almost all branches of management studies. This trend has been seen in India, too, where top management institutes have implemented the case study-based methodology as an important pedagogical tool in business education. The major issue in India, however, is a severe shortage of Indian case studies through which business schools can provide industry insights to students. This volume fills that gap. It has twenty Indian cases related to different aspects of business management. The cases cover some of the prominent disciplines of management like marketing, finance, human resource management, strategy management, operations management, accounting, and mergers and acquisitions. These cases best serve the purpose of adoption of 'case methodology' in classroom teaching or online lecture sessions for the faculty and students of business management.
Download or read book Sue the Messenger written by Subir Ghosh and published by Paranjoy Guha Thakurta. This book was released on 2016-04-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books come with certain advantages for the journalist/researcher wanting to get the big story out to readers. First, there is a propensity among people to take a book more seriously than a news item or a series of reports in dailies, websites or periodicals. Besides, books by their very nature have a shelf life. Moreover, a book on a contentious subject can be far more damaging for its subjects than news reports, which are ephemeral by nature. Public memory is short too. In other words, when a journalist brings out a publication that is critical in nature of a corporate, the book is taken more seriously, and perceived to be a far bigger threat. A damning report in a newspaper or a magazine too would meet with the same kind of threat perception. Overlay this with the socio-political climate that has been prevailing in India since the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government was re-elected in 2009. Plagued by a number of scams and hamstrung by unbridled inflation, the UPA’s last days were marked by political turbulence. The anti-graft agitation of the India Against Corruption movement led to the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party, but the political capital of the public discontent against corruption was reaped by the Bharatiya Janata Party which, with its partners, went on to form the government in New Delhi in May 2014. The crackdown on dissent that was practised by the UPA in fits and starts, was institutionalised by the NDA. Sue the Messenger is a collection of stories about stories—stories that run foul of corporate entities and conglomerates, which result in SLAPPs (strategic litigation against public participation). By their very nature, SLAPPs are meant to undermine democracy. This is the concern that journalists Subir Ghosh and Paranjoy Guha Thakurta through 'Sue the Messenger' wish to address.

Book Extract : That night, around 2:30 a.m., we were abruptly awakened by blaring sirens and announcements on the hotel’s PA system, urging immediate evacuation. “This is an evacuation warning.” “This is not a drill.” “Please evacuate the hotel immediately.” “We made our way through the corridor, down the fire escape, and into the open car parking space facing Bath Road. I could see hundreds of people around me, who had also just evacuated the hotel, some running out in their nightgowns and some naked, as the splitting sound of the loud horn pulsated in my ears.” "On that damp, cold night in London, we all stood helpless in the middle of the night in the left and right car parking areas. After a brief period, we saw the bomb squads and London Police, come rushing in with the fire engines blaring.” “Few of us travelled to Canada and attended the trial. We were seated in an area barely 15 feet away from where Malik and Bagri sat during the trial, and for days, we sat there watching the killers of our families.” “I will never forget the expressions on the faces of those two criminals, smirking, knowing that they were responsible for the murder of my family and all 331 innocent souls on board that ill-fated Air India Flight 182. Throughout the trial, they sat with smirks on their faces, seemingly triumphant, while looking at the crowd and the families of the victims.” “My family just died again,” “They killed 331 people once more,” and “This was the gravest injustice inflicted upon the victims of the Air India bombing!” As CBC News reported, But Sanjay Lazar had no trouble summing up how they felt in one, biting sentence.” “Today, once again, 20 years on,” he said, “we have lost our families all over again—this time to the Canadian justice system." Reviews : "It shines a light on how justice was obstructed in the Kanishka Air India Bombing Case, the worst act of aviation terrorism globally, before 9/11. Years of hard work have gone into the writing of this book. A must-read book- BARKHA DUTT" "A moving read about courage and determination in the aftermath of the tragedy of the Kanishka bombing - VIR SANGHVI". "Now, at last, Sanjay is taking the time to lay out the whole story. He's "here as of right." He knows the law, he knows aviation, and he certainly knows about bereavement. And this time. He's not rushing from the airport at the very last minute.- TERRY MILEWSKI"

Book Synopsis The Indian Media Economy (2-volume set) by : Adrian Athique
Download or read book The Indian Media Economy (2-volume set) written by Adrian Athique and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-29 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century has witnessed the rise of India as a major media producer and consumer market increasingly engaged with the global economy. Aided by rising incomes, technological remediation, regulatory strategies, and a shifting political terrain, the business of media has been given official recognition as a substantive component of India’s economy and as a prominent feature of its economic thinking. In light of these developments, these two pioneering volumes investigate the dynamics of an increasingly integrated media economy encompassing television, film, music, sport, and telecoms. Volume 1: Industrial Dynamics and Cultural Adaptation illustrates the distinctive industrial dynamics of India’s media economy, tracking the deeply embedded cultural, political, and economic forces that determine its everyday operation. The selection of essays serves to demonstrate the unique patterns of development and the complex field of exchanges that have constituted India’s media economy. As a whole, this volume posits a comprehensive approach to understanding the nature of media resources, the negotiation of industrial norms and the cultural context of a media economy firmly situated in the realities of India’s distinct regions, cultures, and human networks. Volume 2: Market Dynamics and Social Transactions provides a comprehensive analysis of the interlocking markets that constitute the media economy, focusing upon its particular commodity forms, labour conditions, and spaces of consumption. Taking account of a rich set of case studies, this volume argues for the necessary consideration of multiple and interdependent markets in explicating our everyday encounters with media. By foregrounding the social transactions that encapsulate market exchanges, it begins to illustrate some of the novel aspirations, meanings, and relationships arising with India’s media economy.
Book Synopsis Business and Politics in India by : Christophe Jaffrelot
Download or read book Business and Politics in India written by Christophe Jaffrelot and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, politics in India has moved steadily in a pro-business direction. This shift has important implications for both government and citizens. In Business and Politics in India, leading scholars of Indian politics have gathered to offer an analytical synthesis of this vast topic. Collectively, they cover the many strategies that businesses have used to exert their newfound power in recent times and organize the book around a few central concerns. They first analyze the nature of business power and how it shapes political change in India. Second, they look at the consequences of business' growing power on some important issue areas-labor, land, urban governance, and the media. Finally, they take account of regional variation and analyze state-business relations. This definitive account offers significant insights into how and why corporations have increased their power in contemporary Indian politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offend, Shock, or Disturb is a comprehensive examination of free speech under the Indian Constitution. It explores Indian free speech jurisprudence from a doctrinal, comparative, and philosophical perspective. Taking as its point of departure the constitutional guarantee of the freedom of speech and expression—Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(2) of the Constitution of India—the book discusses, clause by clause, the development of law from colonial times to present-day controversies. Issues relating to public order, sedition, obscenity and pornography, hate speech, film and online censorship, privacy and defamation, the contempt of court, the nature of speech and the relationship between free speech and economic structure, and the inter-relationships between them have been comprehensively examined. As free speech campaigns gain intensity by the day, the book presents the myriad understandings and limitations of the free speech law, and suggests possible pathways for the future.
Book Synopsis The SAGE Encyclopedia of Terrorism, Second Edition by : Gus Martin
Download or read book The SAGE Encyclopedia of Terrorism, Second Edition written by Gus Martin and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six years after publication of the first edition of the best-selling Encyclopedia of Terrorism, much has changed on the national security scene. Despite the dark promises of Osama bin Laden following the 9/11 attacks, the United States has not experienced any major domestic terror incidents. Al-Qaeda itself is believed to be a severely crippled organization. But while U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq--not to mention the arrival of the Obama administration, a new balance of power within Congress, and an increasingly fragile economic picture--have significantly affected the national security picture, the threat of economic chaos and massive loss of life due to terror attacks has not abated. Indeed, in July 2008 analysts pointed out that even a relatively small terrorist organization could present a dire threat, with some experts arguing that a biological, chemical, or even nuclear attack on a major U.S. city is all but inevitable. In this highly charged, rapidly shifting environment, we are pleased to present the The SAGE Encyclopedia of Terrorism, Second Edition, a thoroughly updated and expanded edition of the original, highly regarded reference work. Nearly 100,000 words of new material will be added, along with fully updated original entries, and expanded coverage. New introductory essays will explore the impact of terrorism on economics, public health, religion, and even pop culture. Ethical issues such as the role of torture in interrogations, competing notions of security versus liberty, and the debates over FISA legislation and Guantanamo Bay will also be covered. Two dozen entries on significant recent events—such as the London bombings, Chechen attacks on Russian interests, and the rescue of Ingrid Bettancourt—and some 60 additional new entries will restore the work as an up-to-the-minute, natural first-stop for researchers.

Book excerpt: Adventures in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Let's go to India for a few sublimely ridiculous non-adventure holidays. It's hot, cheap and freaky over there. These are the stories of my three trips to India. Most of the action happens in India, but Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Netherlands and England also feature. If you have ever travelled in South Asia, you will probably relate to some of this. Look out for the story of the two laundry men who looked similar to each other. They caused all kinds of confusion. The first India trip was from the perspective of a tourist, but foir the second and third trips I brought along some larger-than-life personalities, Bongo van Latte and Streev Greebling. Third world or no third world, we're gonna party! Wittily written, well designed, and illustrated with photographs and artwork.
