Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Descendants of Nicholas Beery: Born in Switzerland Emigrated From Switzerland to Pennsylvania in Complete and a Complete Genealogical Family Register With Biographies of Many of His Descendants, From the Earliest Available Records to the Present Time; Dates in Three Centuries Where do you find an intelligent people who would post pone any secular work or business transaction for 200 years, with an evident prospect of never having it accomplished? This is precisely what has been neglected in producing a written history long ago of Nicholas Beery and his many thousands of descendants. The author acknowledges that deep down in his heart he has an insuppressible feeling that we should do honor and reverence to our dear and worthy ancestors, who paved the way for our American liberties and our Christian privileges, and our present prosperity. I very much doubt whether there is one in a thousand of the readers of this history who even thinks of, or appreciates the blessings that have come to us through the emigration to America of our dear old ancestor, Nicholas Beery, of 1727. He, with thousands of others who were compelled by the Swiss government to do military service and who entertained non-resistant principles, left that domain and came to America, where religious liberty was promised to them by William Penn, through whose tireless and angelic efforts these conscientious and harmless people were sheltered in Pennsylvania. Because of persecution and oppression in Switzerland a large body of Mennonites fled from the cantons of Zurich, Berne and Schaffenhausen to Pennsylvania, where they purchased a large body of timber land of Penn's agents in Lancaster and other counties, where, among the Indians and wild beasts, the Swiss settlement formed a nucleus or center of a rapidly-increasing Swiss, German and French colony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Kemper Family in the United States: Descendants of John Kemper of Virginia; With a Short Historical Sketch of His Family and of the German Reformed Colony at Germanna and Germantown, Va The Genealogical Record is just what it claims to be; not a history, but a genealogy. No attempt has been made to write historical sketches, however interesting they might have been, of the various members of the family, because it would have so largely added to the bulk and cost of the book. It is a genealogy pure and simple. If another edition should seem to be warranted, possibly much can be done in that direction. The arrangement of the work is apparent. The names are given by generations; all the members of one generation being given before the next begins. Every person is numbered and the numbering runs straight through from the beginning to the end. It will be seen that there are two columns of figures on every page, the outside column refers back to the previous generation, the inside one forward to the succeedinggeneration. To follow the record of any person, take his number as given in the inside column and turn to the succeeding generation, where it appears in the outside column. Thus on page 56, John Peter Kemper, the eldest son of the emigrant, is N o. 14. Turn to page 59 where 14 appears in the outside column, and John Peter Kemper's record is given. Should you wish to follow the line of James Kemper, the sixth child of John Peter, whose number on this same page is 53, turn to the next generation on page 66 where 53 appears in the outside column, and you will find James Kemper's record in full; and so on. Aid is given by following each name by the character, I if it appears in the next generation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogical Record of the Descendants of the Schwenkfelders, Who Arrived in Pennsylvania in 1733, 1734, 1736, 1737: From the German of the Rev. Balthasar Heebner, and From Other Sources; With an Historical Sketch About fou/r years ago a movement was inaugurated looking to the publication at some time in the not distant future of a more complete history of the Schwenkfelders than has yet appeared, and a Committee charged with the collection of material for such work was appointed at the Annual Conference of the Society in October, 1875. The labors of that committee naturally turned the attention of their constituents to the subject of genealogy, and excited a very general desire for the compilation from the many existing manuscripts of a complete genealogy of'the de scendants of the immigrant Schwenkfelders. By common con sent the superintendence of such compilation was devolved upon the undersigned, who engaged the services of Rev. Reuben Krie bel to collect and transcribe the several records in a form suitable for printing: The present volume is the result of their labors. The Rev. Balthasar Heebner, who died at an advanced age in 1848, had prepared and kept a record of marriages, births, and deaths of those who belonged to the Society of Schwenk felders (of which he was a minister) to within a few years of his death. This record was the most complete one extant, yet in many instances omissmns occurred, which had to be sup plied, partially from other manuscripts, and from other records, kept in family Bibles, etc. As Mr. Heebner kept no record of those who did not adhere to the Society, other means had to be resorted to for the necessary information. This involved considerable labor, and the compiler opened a correspondence with all from whom he could obtain any knowledge.
