Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the cataclysmic decade that is the focus of this book, Nigeria was subject to several near-death experiences. These began when the country nearly tore itself apart after the northern-led military government annulled the results of a 1993 presidential election won by the southerner Moshood Abiola, and ended with former military ruler General Olusegun Obasanjo being the unlikely conduit of democracy. This mini-history of a nation's life also reflects on three mesmerizing protagonists who personified that era. First up is Abiola: the multi-billionaire businessman who had his election victory voided by the generals who made him rich, and who was later assassinated. General Sani Abacha was the mysterious, reclusive ruler under whose watch Abiola was arrested and pro-democracy activists (including Abiola's wife) were murdered. He also oversaw a terrifying Orwellian state security operation. Although Abacha is today reviled as a tyrant, the author eschews selective amnesia, reminding Nigerians that they goaded him into seizing power. The third protagonist is Obasanjo, who emerged from prison to return to power as an elected civilian leader. The penumbra of military rule still looms over Nigeria nearly twenty years after the soldiers departed, and key personalities featured in this book remain in government, including the current president.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Nigerian Politics by : A. Carl LeVan
Download or read book Contemporary Nigerian Politics written by A. Carl LeVan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, Nigeria's voters cast out the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Here, A. Carl LeVan traces the political vulnerability of Africa's largest party in the face of elite bargains that facilitated a democratic transition in 1999. These 'pacts' enabled electoral competition but ultimately undermined the party's coherence. LeVan also crucially examines the four critical barriers to Nigeria's democratic consolidation: the terrorism of Boko Haram in the northeast, threats of Igbo secession in the southeast, lingering ethnic resentments and rebellions in the Niger Delta, and farmer-pastoralist conflicts. While the PDP unsuccessfully stoked fears about the opposition's ability to stop Boko Haram's terrorism, the opposition built a winning electoral coalition on economic growth, anti-corruption, and electoral integrity. Drawing on extensive interviews with a number of politicians and generals and civilians and voters, he argues that electoral accountability is essential but insufficient for resolving the representational, distributional, and cultural components of these challenges.
Book Synopsis Ethnic Militias and the Threat to Democracy in Post-transition Nigeria by : Osita Agbu
Download or read book Ethnic Militias and the Threat to Democracy in Post-transition Nigeria written by Osita Agbu and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The democratic opening presented by Nigeria's successful transition to civil rule (June 1998 to May 1999) unleashed a host of hitherto repressed or dormant political forces. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly difficult to differentiate between genuine demands by these forces on the state and outright criminality and mayhem. Post-transition Nigeria is experiencing the proliferation of ethnic militia movements purportedly representing, and seeking to protect, their ethnic interests in a country, which appears incapable of providing the basic welfare needs of its citizens. It is against the background of collective disenchantment with the Nigerian state, and the resurgence of ethnic identity politics that this research interrogates the growing challenge posed by ethnic militias to the Nigerian democracy project. The central thesis is that the over-centralization of power in Nigeria 's federal practice and the failure of post-transitional politics in genuinely addressing the "National Question," has resulted in the emergence of ethnic militias as a specific response to state incapacity. The short- and long-term threats posed by this development to Nigeria 's fragile democracy are real, and justify the call for a National Conference that will comprehensively address the demands of the ethnic nationalities.

Book Synopsis Myths of Peace and Democracy? Towards Building Pillars of Hope, Unity and Transformation in Africa by : Munyaradzi Mawere
Download or read book Myths of Peace and Democracy? Towards Building Pillars of Hope, Unity and Transformation in Africa written by Munyaradzi Mawere and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myths of peace and democracy in Africa are at the heart of this volume. Democracy and peace have become buzz words across postcolonial Africa. The gospel of democracy and peace is preached by national governments and by civil society and international organisations alike. But to what extent are the ongoing sideshows and charades of quasi-oligarchies in Africa really democracy? What do ordinary Africans mean when they hunger and thirst for democracy and peace? Positive and noble as the loud sounding rhetoric about democracy and peace in Africa might seem, the reality of propaganda and dissemblance and of multi-dimensional violence are simply too overwhelming not to be disillusioning. This book interrogates the rampant violence, enduring conflicts, autocratic governance, and facades of democracy amidst claims and calls for enduring peace on the continent. This is a monumental resource book for human rights activists, conflict management practitioners, civil society activists, political scientists, statesmen and development practitioners. It poses a challenge to those African governments who claim to embrace principles of democracy and respect for human rights to rethink and reconsider their role as ambassadors of peace, hope, transformation, and good governance.
Download or read book Nigeria written by J. Isawa Elaigwu and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria has experienced different forms of crises and instability since she became independent on October 1 1960. The country has also been under different forms of rule - from the Westminster system of parliamentary democracy in the First Republic (1960-1966),to prolonged periods of military rule (1966-1979, 1983-1999) to a presidential system of governance (1979-1983, 1999-present). During these periods, there have been several contentious issues that appear to permanently put the country on the precipice. In this collection of essays, Isawa Elaigwu, a professor emeritus of political science reflects on the country's painful political experiences, arguing that it is necessary for Nigerians to understand the past and actively participate in the present in order to create a brighter future for the country. The essays in the book therefore serve as the links between the country's yesterday and today as foundations for the future.

To survive, democracy needs people adequately prepared to enact it. Such preparation for effective citizenship in a complex and plural world requires an adult civic education, one that goes beyond simple knowledge acquisition. It requires a transformative education to help learners become agents and co-shapers of their worlds. This book offers examples of the roles that civic education has played and can play in different communities. In this collection, scholars from around the world report and reflect on civic adult education, examining approaches, paradigms, and concepts that help us to act in culturally, ethnically, linguistically, and religiously diverse societies.

Download or read book Africa’s Big Men written by Kenneth Kalu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book spotlights, analyzes and explains varying forms and patterns of state-society relations on the African continent, taking as point of departure the complexities created by the emergence, proliferation and complicated interactions of so-called ‘big men’ across Africa's fifty-four states. The contributors interrogate the evolution of Africa’s big men; the role of the big men in Africa’s political and economic development; and the relationship between the state, the big men and the citizens. Throughout the chapters the contributors engage with a number of questions from different disciplinary and methodological orientations. How did these states evolve to exhibit various deformities in their composition, functioning and in their relations with the societies that they govern? What roles did Atlantic and other slavery and European colonialism play in creating states that are unable to display the right and good relationships with citizens in civil society? Why did these forms of predatory state-society relations continue to thrive in Africa after the end of Atlantic slave trade and subsequent colonialism? Why did the emerging African leaders at independence fail to effectively dismantle the structures of exploitation and expropriation that were the defining features of slavery and colonialism? Who are Africa’s ‘big men’, and what are their trajectories? This book is essential reading for all students and scholars of African politics, public policy and administration, political economy, and democratisation.
Book Synopsis Laying the Foundation for Nigeria's Democracy by : Professor Humphrey N. Nwosu
Download or read book Laying the Foundation for Nigeria's Democracy written by Professor Humphrey N. Nwosu and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy: My Account of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and Its Annulment is a factual, gripping, and compelling insight into the most authentic analysis and explanation of the nation’s political environment under which the June 12 election was held and how the result was tragically annulled, even as it was accurately adjudged as the freest and fairest in the history of the country. The theoretical thrust deals with the crux of the problems that face the task of nation-building in Nigeria which is legitimacy. Prudently, the author examines how the Nigerian leadership tends to attract legitimacy and its acceptance from the generality of Nigerians. He documents the centrifugal and centripetal forces that combined in the various ways to shape as well as influence President Babangida’s transition program. The program is analyzed and compared with the previous transition program, and the process, its special features like its phased nature and its inbuilt learning process are identified. Professor Humphrey Nwosu concludes the book by stating unequivocally that Nigerians found a great deal of opportunity for real and genuine democracy during June 12 presidential election and they grabbed it. The outcome of the election and its annulment had whetted the appetite of both the majority and the minority ethnic groups of Nigeria. There is therefore a burning desire for equality, fairness and freedom for all Nigerians. Suggesting how Nigerians can solve their present political problems, he reiterates that the June 12 presidential election lays a strong foundation for democracy in Nigeria, and also maintains that June 12, 1993 election was indeed the Real Democracy Day in Nigeria while May 29, 1999 was its offshoot. This broad-ranging book of stimulating account is commended to students of political science, political leaders, democrats, all public office-holders as well as independent readers having the interest of Nigeria’s development at heart.
