Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary America explains the crucial events in the history of the United States between 1763 and 1815, when settlers of North America rebelled against British rule, won their independence in a long and bloody struggle, and created an enduring republic. Now in its second edition, Revolutionary America has been completely revised, updating the strengths of the previous edition. New features include: New introduction for the second edition. New chapter on Native Americans. Revised and expanded bibliographic essay. Updated historiography throughout the text. Companion Website with study aids, maps, and documentary resources. Revolutionary America also examines those who were excluded from the immediate benefits and rights secured by the creation of the new republic. In particular, author Francis D. Cogliano describes the experiences of women, Native Americans, and African Americans, each of whose experiences challenged the principle that "all men are created equal," which lay at the heart of the American Revolution. Placing the political revolution at the core of the story, Revolutionary America presents a clear history of the War of Independence, and lays a distinctive foundation for students and scholars of the Early Republic. Book Synopsis Law's Imagined Republic by : Steven Wilf
Download or read book Law's Imagined Republic written by Steven Wilf and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law's Imagined Republic shows how the American Revolution was marked by the rapid proliferation of law talk across the colonies. This legal language was both elite and popular, spanned different forms of expression from words to rituals, and included simultaneously real and imagined law. Since it was employed to mobilize resistance against England, the proliferation of revolutionary legal language became intimately intertwined with politics. Drawing on a wealth of material from criminal cases, Steven Wilf reconstructs the intertextual ways Americans from the 1760s through the 1790s read law: reading one case against another and often self-consciously comparing transatlantic legal systems as they thought about how they might construct their own legal system in a new republic. What transformed extraordinary tales of crime into a political forum? How did different ways of reading or speaking about law shape our legal origins? And, ultimately, how might excavating innovative approaches to law in this formative period, which were constructed in the street as well as in the courtroom, alter our usual understanding of contemporary American legal institutions? Law's Imagined Republic tells the story of the untidy beginnings of American law.
Book Synopsis To Contest with All the Powers of Darkness by : Jacob E Hicks
Download or read book To Contest with All the Powers of Darkness written by Jacob E Hicks and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines the ecclesiological and political networks that John Leland (1754-1833) and other Baptist leaders-among them, Jonathan Going, Luther Rice, Isaac Backus, and Samuel Stilman-created to attempt political disestablishment in Massachusetts during Leland's lifetime. The author contends that historiography that focuses narrowly on Leland tends to distort the very important role he played in the development of religious freedom in the revolutionary and Early Republic period"--

Download or read book Samuel Adams written by John K. Alexander and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Adams: America's Revolutionary Politician offers a fresh full-life biography of the man Thomas Jefferson once described as the helmsman of the American Revolution. In his study, historian John K. Alexander uses narrative history to argue that Samuel Adams was both America's first professional politician and its first modern politician. Adams, Alexander argues, was an unwavering politician who strove to protect the people's basic rights and who emphasized the importance of virtue, liberty, a sense of duty, and education in fashioning a republican society. John K. Alexander's fresh reading of Adams's record, and a uniquely close look into his personal life, uncovers a masterful politician and a man consistent in his beliefs.
Book Synopsis American Politics in the Early Republic by : James Roger Sharp
Download or read book American Politics in the Early Republic written by James Roger Sharp and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years from 1789 to 1801, the republican political institutions forged by the American Constitution were put to the test. A new nation--born in revolution, divided over the nature of republicanism, undermined by deep-seated sectional allegiances, and mired in foreign policy entanglements--faced the challenge of creating a stable, enduring national authority and union. In this engagingly written book, James Roger Sharp offers a penetrating new assessment disputing the conventional wisdom that the birth of the country was a relatively painless and unexceptional one. Instead, he tells the dramatic story of how the euphoria surrounding the inauguration of George Washington as the country's first president quickly soured. Soon, the Federalist defenders of the administration and their Republican critics regarded each other as bitter political enemies. The intense partisanship prevented the acceptance of the idea that an opposition could both oppose and be loyal to the government. As a result, the nation teetered on the brink of disintegration as fear, insurrection, and threats of secession abounded. Many even envisioned armed civil conflict as a possible outcome. Despite the polarization, the nation did manage to survive its first trial. The election of Thomas Jefferson in 1801 and the nonviolent transfer of power from one political group to another ended the immediate crisis. But sectionally based politics continued to plague the nation and eventually led to the Civil War.
Book Synopsis Organizations, Civil Society, and the Roots of Development by : Naomi R. Lamoreaux
Download or read book Organizations, Civil Society, and the Roots of Development written by Naomi R. Lamoreaux and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern developed nations are rich and politically stable in part because their citizens are free to form organizations and have access to the relevant legal resources. Yet in spite of the advantages of open access to civil organizations, it is estimated that eighty percent of people live in countries that do not allow unfettered access. Why have some countries disallow the formation of organizations as part of their economic and political system? The contributions to Organizations, Civil Society, and the Roots of Development seek to answer this question through an exploration of how developing nations throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, made the transition to allowing their citizens the right to form organizations. The transition, contributors show, was not an easy one. Neither political changes brought about by revolution nor subsequent economic growth led directly to open access. In fact, initial patterns of change were in the opposite direction, as political coalitions restricted access to specific organizations for the purpose of maintaining political control. Ultimately, however, it became clear that these restrictions threatened the foundation of social and political order. Tracing the path of these modern civil societies, Organizations, Civil Society, and the Roots of Development is an invaluable contribution to all interested in today’s developing countries and the challenges they face in developing this organizational capacity.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Volume 35 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Volume 35 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 886 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first two months covered by this volume, Thomas Jefferson is residing at Monticello, avoiding the "rather sickly" season in the nation's capital. His mountaintop house finally has a roof and both daughters and their families come to stay with him. Using cowpox vaccine received from Benjamin Waterhouse, he undertakes what he calls "my experiment," the systematic inoculation of family members and slaves against the smallpox. In Washington, the construction of buildings for the nation's capital moves forward. The walls of the chamber of the House of Representatives now extend "up to the window heads," with only three feet more to go. Jefferson considers the erection of this chamber as well as completion of a "good gravel road" along Rock Creek as crucial for "ensuring the destinies of the city." The interior decoration of the President's House also progresses, with draperies, girandoles, and a chandelier furnishing the circular room. His carriage is ready to be shipped from Philadelphia. As the city takes shape, so too do the operating principles of Jefferson's administration. He dispatches a letter to his heads of department outlining "the mode & degrees of communication" for conducting their business. In mid-November, he enters a period of intense activity in the preparation of his first annual message to Congress, soliciting suggestions but personally drafting the document that he will submit in writing in early December.
