Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democratic Ideal in Education In our land there is to-day considerable discussion upon educational matters. Appeals are made sometimes to our reason, and sometimes to our prejudices, and considerable bitterness of feeling is aroused and displayed, and generally much pother is created upon matters that are only incidentally educational. Let us trust that out of this evil good may come. Let us hope that what is at present an interest produced artificially, and with much labour, may become perennial and natural. Let us seize this golden opportunity to make our people permanently interested in this fateful problem of national education, so that the popular apathy, which in the past has been our curse, may develop into a popular vigilance, without which no truly national system is possible. But popular vigilance needs popular intelligence. Until our people can be made to see the true inwardness of their own instinctive faith, until they can be made to realise what national training means, and to understand why we need a better system of education - not, indeed, to beat the German, but to beat the devil - only when these matters have become part of our common faith may we look for the regeneration of this land. The superficial is always evident, but the spirit is rarely recognised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education The following pages embody an endeavor to detect and state the ideas implied in a democratic society and to apply these ideas to the problems of the enterprise of education. The discussion includes an indication of the constructive aims and methods of public education as seen from this point of view, and a critical estimate of the theories of knowing and moral development which were formulated in earlier social condi tions, but which still operate, in societies nominally democratic, to hamper the adequate realization of the democratic ideal. As will appear from the book itself, the philosophy stated in this book connects the growth of democracy with the development of the experimental method in the sciences, evolutionary ideas in the biological sciences, and the industrial reorganization, and is concerned to point out the changes in subject matter and method of education indicated by these developments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trend in American Education One of the most significant phenomena in the develop ment of our American democracy during the past thirty years has been the ever enlarging scope of our system of education. There has been a conscious attempt on the part of our people to realize the democratic ideal of equality of opportunity. The remarkable progress that has been made is due in no small measure to the leadership of a group of men and women who have thought and planned in advance of current practice. During the twenty-five years which are just past Dean Russell has been responsible for the development of an educational institution which has trained leaders for our American schools from the kindergarten to the university. He has been in the position of one who has thought and planned in terms of our rapidly developing school system. His leadership would not have been recognized had he sought merely to meet the current demand. The very great respect which members of the profession have come to have for his judgment, and their confidence in his fore sight are clearly evidenced by the growth and influence of the institution over which he presides. Book Synopsis Education and the Democratic Ideal by : Steven M. Cahn
Download or read book Education and the Democratic Ideal written by Steven M. Cahn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven M. Cahn has succeeded in articulating a defense of a particularly valuable conception of higher education in the liberal arts. He presents acute logical analyses in a clear, readable style. In particular, his critique of a too facile concern with 'relevance, ' his insistence on the importance of standards and, above all, his account of the importance of liberal arts education to democracy should be read by educators and policymakers alike. Even those who ultimately reject Cahn's position surely would profit from having to wrestle with his arguments. ROBERT L. SIMON Professor of Philosophy, Hamilton College Clinton, New York Education and the Democratic Ideal is a closely reasoned study of grading, assignments, examinations, and other tactical issues. Because of this it is a real departure from most discussion of university education, and the more to be valued. RONALD BERMAN Past Chairman National Endowment for the Humanitie

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education for Democracy Indeed, With its present organization, aim, and equipment of teachers, the school system would be extremely defective even though every indi vidual child enjoyed the advantages Which the smallest number now possess. In organization, the public school system follows the military and industrial plan With its various grades of super visory officials. In aim, there is lack of vision, and an imperfect understanding of purpose. Thehaphazard equipment of teachers is too glaring to need comment. Our educational system there fore must be characterized as unprogressive, antiquated, fundamentally undemocratic, and inadequate. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Administration of Education in a Democracy This book was projected with the idea that the time is here for such a preliminary treatment, as an organic whole, of the field of educational administration. In seeking for a unifying principle the inevitable choice fell to our national ideals as expressed in democracy as we Americans have conceived it. The aim has been to deal with principles, giving just enough space to history and description to furnish a suitable background and to account for sequences. In this way only did it seem possible to deal with the prob lems presented in such a constructively critical manner as the situation seemed to demand. The book makes its appeal (1) to teachers and stu dents of education, (2) to school boards and all school officials, and (3) to public men and legislators interested in a comprehensive survey of the problems of public education.
