Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Defense of Charleston Harbor: Including Fort Sumter and the Adjacent Islands; 1863-1865 IN the war between the States, while the long defense of Charleston, &uth Carolina, was progressing under my command against a formidable attack by land and sea, and with then unprecedented appliances of war fare, it became evident to me that a well-prepared and authentic history of the operations was due as well to the brave forces of the South engaged as to the claims of military study and experience everywhere. Accordingly, I issued the special order printed below, making pro vision for the need. It gives me pleasure now to find that such a history has, at length, been written by one of the officers originally appointed, whose work has been accepted and approved by two other members of the same board, as well as examined in part by myself. They unite with me in introducing and recommending it to the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: First published in 1950 and long sought by collectors and historians, South Carolina Goes to War, 1860-1865 stands as the only institutional and political history of the Palmetto State's secession from the Union, entry into the Confederacy, and management of the war effort. Notable for its attention to the precursors of war too often neglected in other studies, the volume devotes half of its chapters to events predating the firing on Fort Sumter and pays significant attention to the Executive Councils of 1861 and 1862.

All articles published in the Proceedings after 2002 are available on the SCHA website, but this volume offers, for the first time, easy access to the journal’s best articles on the Civil War and Reconstruction up through 2001. Book Synopsis A History of Fort Sumter by : M. Patrick Hendrix
Download or read book A History of Fort Sumter written by M. Patrick Hendrix and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling account—from construction to ruin—of the South Carolina fort where the Civil War’s opening shots were fired, forging its place in history. In 1829, construction began on a fort atop a rock formation in the mouth of Charleston Harbor. Decades later, Fort Sumter was near completion on December 26, 1860, when Maj. Robert Anderson occupied it in response to the growing hostilities between the North and South. As a symbol of sedition for the North and holy ground for the South, possession of Fort Sumter was deemed essential to both sides when the Civil War began. By 1864, the fort, heavily bombarded by Union artillery, was a shapeless mass of ruins, mostly burned rubble and sand with a garrison of Confederate soldiers holding its ground. Join author M. Patrick Hendrix as he follows the tumultuous lives of the men who fought to control what later became one of the most revered monuments to the war. Includes photos

Download or read book Sumter After the First Shots written by Derek Smith and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows the story of how the Civil War began at Fort Sumter, but what happened to the fort after the first shots were fired there? The North wanted to restore Sumter to its rightful place in the Union and close the vital Confederate supply port of Charleston while the South needed to defend its birthplace and keep the supplies flowing--thus making Fort Sumter one of the most fervently attacked and most tenaciously defended pieces of real estate in the United or Confederate States of America throughout four years of war.
Book Synopsis War on Record by : Yael A. Sternhell
Download or read book War on Record written by Yael A. Sternhell and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the United States' greatest archival project and how it has shaped what we know about the Civil War Winner of the 2024 Tom Watson Brown Book Award * Shortlisted for the 2024 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize The Civil War generated a vast archive of official records--documents that would shape the postwar era and determine what future generations would know about the war. Yael Sternhell traces these records from their creation during wartime through their deployment in a host of postwar battles, including those between the federal government and Southerners seeking reparations and between veterans blaming each other for defeat. These documents were eventually published in the most important historical collection ever to have been assembled in the United States: The War of the Rebellion: The Official Records of the Union and the Confederate Armies. Known as the OR, it is the ultimate source for generations of scholars and writers and ordinary citizens researching the war. By delving into the archive, Sternhell reveals its power to shape myths, hide truths, perpetuate rancor, and foster reconciliation. Far more than a storehouse of papers, the Civil War archive is a major historical actor in its own right.
