Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dead Heart of Australia The expedition, of which some of the results are stated in this volume, was undertaken in the hope that it would be the first of a series, for the study of the interior of South-eastern Australia, conducted in connection with the geological school of Melbourne University. The narrative is largely reprinted from some letters to the Melbourne Age. It is repeated in the hope that it may be of value, as giving some idea of the conditions of the Lake Eyre district, in an interesting stage in its development. On the return of the expedition, I had at once to take up the duties of Director of the Geological Survey Branch of the Mines Department of Victoria, and had therefore to postpone work on the considerable geological collections we had made. Most of the book was completed three years ago; but its publication was delayed in the hope that I might find time to finish an account of the geology of the Lake Eyre district. Download or read book Waking the Dead written by John Eldredge and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waking the Dead—newly revised and updated for these trying times—reveals the secret of finding a full life, identifying the fierce battle over our hearts, and embracing all that God has in store. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” That’s the offer of Christianity, from God himself. Jesus touched people, and they changed: the blind had sight, the lame walked, the deaf heard, the dead were raised. To be touched by God, in other words, is to be restored, to be made into all God means us to be. That is what Christianity promises to do—make us whole, set us free, bring us fully alive.

Book Synopsis Hunters and Collectors by : Tom Griffiths
Download or read book Hunters and Collectors written by Tom Griffiths and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-04 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunters and Collectors is about historical consciousness and environmental sensibilities in European Australia from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It is in part a collective biography of amateur antiquarians, archaeologists, naturalists, journalists and historians: people who shaped the Australian historical imagination. Dr Griffiths illuminates the way these avid collectors and investigators of the Australian land and of its indigenous inhabitants contributed a sense of identity at colony-wide and eventually nationwide level. He also considers the rise of professional history, anthropology and archaeology in the universities, which ignored the efforts of the amateurs. Griffiths shows how the seemingly trivial activities of these hunters and collectors feed into the political and environmental debates of the 1990s. This book is outstanding in its originality, interpretative insight and literary flair.
