Book Synopsis The De Havilland Aircraft Company by : John B. Taylor
Download or read book The De Havilland Aircraft Company written by John B. Taylor and published by Tempus Pub Limited. This book was released on 1996 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells one of the great stories of British engineering excellence in the twentieth century. Beginning with a two-man and two-woman family enterprise to build a primitive 'stick and string' aeroplane, financed by a far-sighted grandparent, the story unfolds rapidly. Within six years the aeroplane's designer, Geoffrey de Havilland ('D.H') was able to create the D.H.2 fighters that helped to end the dominance of German Fokker monoplanes then shooting Britain's Royal Flying Corps from the skies France in 1915-16.When the fighting ended, his D.H.9s operated the world's first sustained daily international airline services. Six more years and D.H.60 Moths established the worldwide club movement that put fun and adventure into flying. The D.H.88 Comet won the greatest ever air race, across the globe, in 1934. When was returned in Europe, the D.H.98 Mosquito introduced new concepts of bombing - so fast that fighters could not catch it; so precise that it was possible to open doors of prisons for patriots to escape. After the war, the D.H.106 Comet airliner survived disaster to open the way to an age of jet travel when no tow peoples on earth need be more than twenty four hours apart. We can be proud that an English company, led by people with vision, achieved so much on one man's lifetime.

Book Synopsis De Havilland Enterprises by : Graham M. Simons
Download or read book De Havilland Enterprises written by Graham M. Simons and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully illustrated biography examines the life, achievements, and brilliant aircraft designs of one of the great pioneers of powered flight. From his groundbreaking designs during The Great War to the illustrious company that bore his name, Captain Sir Geoffrey de Havilland was one of the most important engineers in the history of aeronautics. Here, Graham Simons charts the course of de Havilland’s life from his humble beginnings to the influences and milestones of his early years, his versatile warplanes, and the post-war formation of The De Havilland Aircraft Company Limited. Amongst the momentous machines that de Havilland helped develop were the Gipsy Moth and Tiger Moth, two iconic aircraft types destined to set a variety of aviation records while being piloted by de Havilland himself. His high-performance designs and monocoque wooden construction methods passed through the supremely elegant DH.91 Albatross into the Mosquito. Next came the high-performing Hornet fighter, which pioneered the use of metal-wood and metal-metal bonding techniques, eventually resulting in the world’s first jet airliner, the fabulous Comet. Every one of De Havilland’s products are recorded here in detail, along with the many designs that never left the drawing board and the products of De Havilland’s companies in Australia and Canada.

Book Synopsis De Havilland Aircraft Since 1909 by : Aubrey Joseph Jackson
Download or read book De Havilland Aircraft Since 1909 written by Aubrey Joseph Jackson and published by Putnam Aeronautical Books. This book was released on 1987 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The de Havilland Aircraft Company was founded in 1920, but had its origins with the first steps in biplane design made by Geoffrey de Havilland, who in 1908 left his job with the Motor Omnibus Construction Company to embark on a career as an aeroplane designer. During the First World War, his D.H. 4 bomber design was supplied in hundreds to both the Royal Flying Corps and the United States Army Air Service. A D.H.4 variant was also the first aeroplane to provide a passenger service, between Paris and London. The tradition built on the reputation of de Havilland's work during the First World War, also provided the foundation for some of the most popular aircraft for civil and military aviation - the D.H.60 G Gipsy Moth, the D.H.71 Tiger Moth, the D.H.98 Mosquito light bomber, and the D.H.106 Comet are all storied names in the history of British aviation. The story that unfolds in these pages also includes the tragic death of Geoffrey de Havilland's son, Geoffrey Jr., a test pilot killed flying the De Havilland D.H.108. The late A J Jackson had a particular affection for de Havilland aircaft and was particularly fond of flying Tiger Moths. He is also the author of Avro Aircraft since 1908 and Blackburn Aircraft since 1909 (both Putnam).

Book excerpt: Previously unpublished accounts from the designers, builders and aircrew of the de Havilland MosquitoMany contemporary and previously unpublished photographsComprehensive details on the conversation of surviving aircraft De Havilland Mosquito: The Original Multirole Combat Aircraft covers the creation, design and development of this beloved aircraft. Built in Britain, Canada and Australia, the Mosquito saw extensive service in Britain, Europe and Asia throughout the Second World War. It was initially designed as a twin-Rolls-Royce Merlin-powered unarmed bomber (with a two-man crew), but the aircraft’s versatility allowed it to carry out many more functions. The additional roles of the Mosquito included path finding and photo reconnaissance; acting as a night fighter, an intruder, or a fighter bomber; electronic counter measures and naval operations; and high-speed courier missions. This book is essential for those seeking to study this iconic British aircraft, featuring the experiences of Mosquito designers, construction workers and aircrew. It also contains many original, contemporary and previously unpublished photographs, which cover the aircraft’s service with RAF squadrons and overseas air forces in its many varied roles. For reference, there are detailed appendices describing production, the specifications of each variant, the RAF and RN units equipped with the type, and details of Mosquitos that survive today.
