Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of the Reformation, Vol. 2 A critic might also claim that I have no right to close the volume with Constance. Divisions of time are generally arbitrary; but, on the whole, Constance seems to me the real end of an epoch. Any other term has the greater defect of making a gap between two things which were essentially continuous, the New Learning and the Reformation. The Reformation stands as the greatest achievement of the Germanic race. It may well be taken as the principal event separating the larger life of the modern world from the narrow limitations of the Middle Ages. There is scarcely an important human interest that it has not touched with a beneficent influence. It has se cured greater purity and spirituality in religion it has contributed to the elevation of the laity and the advancement of woman it has confirmed the separation of the secular and the ecclesiastical power; it has brought intellectual freedom, and given an extraordinary impulse to education, sci ence, and literature; it has established the right of freedom of conscience; and, in a word, it has been favorable to all that distinguishes and en nobles our modern civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation, Vol. 22 The fourth part, which discusses briefly the fundamental principles of the Reformation movement, ought perhaps to have been put first as an introduction, but I preferred to place it at the end; partly because such an introduction might have frightened young readers, and partly because the principles of the movement can best be judged after the reader has known something about its history. The fourth part is the only portion of this small manual which has any claim to belong exclusively to the writer, and to represent views of the subject treated for which he is alone responsible. The chronological summary has been taken almost entirely from Weingarten's admirable tables. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of the English Reformation: Its Friends and Foes This story of the Early English Reformation, biographically told, is partly in continuation of a plan formed now some years ago, and commenced by the biography of Martin Luther. The great Saxon reformer occupied among his German fellow-countrymen a position similar to that which was occupied by Zuingli and Calvin successively among the Swiss. These theologians, gifted with large mental capacity, and living amongst those who looked up to them for instruction and guidance, exerted and maintained an authority to which it is in vain to seek a parallel in the religious development of England at the period of the Reformation. The English Reformation was not marked by the striking ascendency of any one individual. Bilney, 'the first framer of Cambridge in the knowledge of Christ, ' as Foxe describes him, was the spiritual father of many who embraced a more Scriptural creed. He was the means of converting, besides others, Hugh Latimer; and he was probably a source, at least of valuable assistance, to Tyndale. But 'little Bilney's' warm heart was always much in advance of his somewhat clouded head. The most conspicuous figure in the ranks of the early English Reformers was Tyndale - the successful translator of Scripture, the author of the most useful religious tracts of the time, and the spiritual father of John Fryth. Book excerpt: Today Gospel has been twisted in a broad field. Faith in Jesus Christ must be built up on the full revelation of God. However, most evangelists do not equip well before ministering. They lack the structure of faith of the Scriptures. The consequence is that both shepherds and sheep are not walking on the way of truth. Actually, they are falling away. Because of lacking of the foundation of faith based on the full words of God, it is not surprised that even popular evangelists deny that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation. Let’s tremble before the Word of God and seek Him. John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Isaiah 66:5 “Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy and they shall be ashamed.”

Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A History of the Reformation (Vol. 2 of 2): Look inside the book: While it may be said with perfect truth that the churchly ideal in the minds of the leaders in most of the Reformed Churches was to restore the theocratic democracy of the early centuries, and that this was a strong point of contrast between them and Luther, who insisted that the jus episcopale belonged to the civil magistrate, in practice the secular authorities in Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Palatinate, etc., kept almost as tight a hold on the Reformed national Churches as did the Lutheran princes and municipalities. ...One has only to compare the Bishops’ Book and the King’s Book of the Henrican period in England with the many statements Erasmus has made about the kind of reformation he desired to see, to recognise that they were meant to serve for a reformation in life and morals which would leave untouched the fundamental doctrinal system of the mediæval Church and its organisation in accordance with the principles laid down by the great Humanist. ...But if originality be the gift to seize, to combine into one organic whole, separate isolated truths, to see their bearing upon the practical religious life of all men, educated and ignorant, to use the new light to strip the common religious life of all paralysing excrescences, to simplify it and to make it clear that the sum and essence of Christianity is “unwavering trust of the heart in Him who has given Himself to us in Christ Jesus as our Father, personal assurance of faith because Christ with His work undertakes our cause,” and to do all this with the tenderest sympathy for every true dumb religiousPg 16 instinct which had made men wander away from the simplicity which is in Christ Jesus, then Luther stands alone in his day and generation, unapproachable by any other.
