Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of History History, in the widest usage of the word, is the study of events, the discovery and record Of what happens when we speak Of Natural History, for example, we mean nothing less than the study of what goes on in Nature, the world about us. In a rather narrower sense, the historical sciences are those in which we cannot make experiments, but are limited to studying what goes on, in that order of time in which things happen to occur. When we describe things, therefore, in their historical order, we are stating their distribution in time; just as we give their geographical order when we describe their distribution in Space. In this sense, therefore, History is a Sister science to Geography. Both deal with the arrangement Of events, together with the causes and effects of this arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heritage of History: Children of the Dawn This series has been designed primarily to give juniors who will later make a more serious study of history, a sound introduction to the subject. But the books also contain sufficient information to supply a broad outline of history for the more backward pupils in senior schools. History is not the mere sifting of dry bones. It forms a living part of ourselves. In the series an attempt has been made to interpret in an interesting way the spirit of man's unceasing attempts at the adventure of living. The future, moreover, is shaped by the past. In the words of Marvin The stream which bears us on from the infinite behind us will not slack its course the stream is unbroken and the past lives on. With these ideas in mind a whole volume has been devoted to prehistoric man. By this means the wonderful progress made by man during this period is adequately indicated and some sense of the duration of the period given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A City of the Dawn There really is no reason why such a life should be dull - it has every element of travel, of risk, of adventure that can make life excit ing. Bishop Westcott once said, A man should be prepared to die for his profession, as in the case of the doctor or the soldier. A shopkeeper must not object if his profession is regarded with less respect, if he cannot die for it.' That is an obvious truth; and the life of the missionary has that first touch of honour and chivalry. Of course, all who go out to such countries run the same risk for different reasons, the soldier, the sailor, the official, the trader. But there is added to the life of the missionary a deeper interest still. Soldiers, sailors, and officials go out to keep order as unobtrusively as they can, but still they are there as conquerors. The traveller goes to pick up impressions, the trader to make money - their object is to bring some thing away. But the missionary goes to understand the heart and mind of the native, to love him if he can, to win his love and trust. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of American History in Europe The aim has been, above all things, to tell the story in such a way that the pupil may readily see how one event led to another, for even very young children enjoy the tracing of cause and effect when the subject matter is put before them in a proper manner. The problems and difficulties encountered and overcome by mankind in its upward progress have been kept in the foreground, stimulating the mind of the child to thought and judg ment, and forcing into the background the mere memory facts. The author desires to express his deep gratitude to those splendid teachers who have tried out the text in their classes. The questions appended to the chapters are largely those of Miss Alice Louise Davis, an unusual teacher of history, as she used the chapters from day to day with her pupils in the River Forest schools. To the author's wife is due the credit of polishing off many rough edges and of aiding in that irksome task of putting the manuscript in form for publication. Divisions of time are generally arbitrary; but, on the whole, Constance seems to me the real end of an epoch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn: Les Aubes The poetry of Emile Verhaeren, more than that of any other modern poet, is made directly out of the complaining voices of the nerves. Other writers, certainly, have been indirectly indebted to the effect of nerves on temperament, but M. Verhaeren seems to express only so much of a temperament as finds its expression through their immediate medium. In his early books "Les Flamandes," "Les Moines" (reprinted, with "Les Bords de la Route," containing earlier and later work, in the first of his two volumes of collected poems), he began by a solid, heavily coloured, exterior manner of painting genre pictures in the Flemish style. Such poems as "Les Paysans," with its fury of description, are like a Teniers in verse; not Breughel has painted a kermesse with hotter colours, a more complete abandonment to the sunlight, wine, and gross passions of those Flemish feasts. This first book, "Les Flamandes," belongs to the Naturalistic movement; but it has already (as in the similar commencements of Huysmans) so ardent a love of colour for its own sake, colour becoming lyrical, that one realizes how soon this absorption in the daily life of farms, kitchens, stables, will give place to another kind of interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Dispensation at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century When a man has completed the allotted term of three score years and ten, it would seem that, if he were ever to know anything reliable, -or if he were ever to be re garded as a Witness competent to testify on the affairs of life, he has reached that period already. The author of this work has been a student of nature and an ob server of the ways of men for sixty years; he began his studies much earlier in life than is customary among men; and would it be strange if during all this time he had learned something that it would be of advantage for the world to know? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of History: An Introduction to Pre-Historic Study The various labors of a crowd of specialists are needed to give completeness to our knowledge of primitive man, and it is scarcely necessary to say that there are a hun dred questions which in such a short book as this have been left untouched. The intention has been to present these features which can best be combined to form a con timaeus panorama, and also to avoid, as far as possible, the subjects most under controversy. No apology surely is needed for the joint character of the work: as in every chapter the conclusions of many different and sometimes contradictory writers had to be examined and compared, and as these chapters, few as they are, spread over various special fields of inquiry. On the evening before their departure, Arthur volunteered to take Lady Bellamy down to the parade to hear the band play. After they had walked about awhile under the shade of the magnolia-trees, which were starred all over with creamy cups of bloom, and sufficiently inspect ed the gay throng of Portuguese inhabitants and English visitors, made gayer still by the amazingly gorgeous uniforms of the officials, Arthur spied two chairs in a comparatively quiet corner, and, suggested that they should sit down.
