Now, as his own grandchildren are on the frightening cusp of adulthood, Spooner has chosen to impart his wisdom to them—and to readers everywhere—in the form of old-fashioned letters. This is the book that every grandparent (or parent) has always meant to write for their children, but has never found the time to do so. In No One Ever Told Us That, John D. Spooner carefully crafts a series of essential life lessons that every young person just out of college or high school needs to read before they embark upon their own life's adventures. Told in friendly and reassuring tones, Spooner relates wonderful stories to illustrate and gently guide the next generation of what they can expect when searching for a job, how to know if you've found the right spouse, insights on how to plan for one's financial future, how the internet has changed our lives, dealing with adversity in life, and much, more more. No One Ever Told Us That condenses all of this key information into one volume—and it's presented in a clear-eyed way that only a loving grandparent can.

Book excerpt: Silver Point wasn’t a place I ever wanted to come home to. But what starts as helping a friend turns into so much more… I might have grown up in Silver Point, but LA is my home now. I’ve made a career for myself there, a life, and coming back to the small town I was raised in has never been on my radar. But when my best friend needs my help, everything changes. She’s the closest thing I’ve ever had to a sister, and she needs me. That’s the only reason I’m staying–until she’s well, and not a minute longer. Nothing is going to change that–certainly not the boy I once had a crush on, who grew up to be one of Silver Point’s firefighters, and somehow still every bit the jerk that I remember. Or is he? I want to keep as far away from him as possible. But Silver Point is a small town, and one thing after another keeps bringing us closer together. It’s easy to get caught up in what could have been–what could still be, if I changed my mind. Until I discover that the boy I knew has a secret…one that I’m not sure I can forgive. This town could be what brings us back together–or it could be what drives us apart forever.

Book excerpt: When you feel stuck in your job or relationship . . . when all you worked for leaves you feeling empty inside . . . when fear of what is to come consumes sleepless nights . . . when love seems like an impossible choice to make . . . when the world is not large enough to contain your grief . . . when you struggle to forgive the unforgivable . . . there is one solution that brings true peace. See the world through God's eyes. Look through God's eyes and you see that you are being guided in every moment with infinite wisdom and inexhaustible love, that life is unfolding with indescribable beauty and grace, that Spirit is gently urging you to align your will with Divine Will and be a source of love, hope, and healing energy to all who cross your path. If you have more confusion than clarity about how to live your beliefs, the ancient wisdom permeating "Through God's Eyes" offers the hope and promise that you can escape from the prison of human perception, welcome peace, love, and joy as the dearest of friends, and become a more positive and powerful force for good in the world. "Through God's Eyes: Finding Peace and Purpose in a Troubled World" is unique in two fundamental ways. First, it is the only book that presents a vast array of spiritual principles in an elegant, engaging format that shows how all these concepts interact, how to weave them together into a cohesive worldview, and how to practically apply this spiritual wisdom to daily life. Second, its inventive format alternates illuminating comments with inspiring quotes that support, build upon, and flow into each other to convey penetrating insights into the meaning and purpose of life and the vastness of human potential. TESTIMONIALS "Through God's Eyes" is s a superb book, a truly enlightened piece of work that is an essential read for all people who are truly devoted to the care and refinement of their soul. Phil is a contemporary mystic, a man whose life is a living commitment to spiritual service. I am honored to know him. Caroline Myss, author of "Defy Gravity" Regardless of how you conceive the Absolute-as God, Goddess, Allah, Universe, or simply as a sense of cosmic beauty and order-your belief will be enriched by "Through God's Eyes." This fine book is a refreshing departure from the preachy ideology of religious dogmatism. It reveals the richness, complexity, and meaning of everyday life, warts and all. Larry Dossey, MD, author of "The Power of Premonitions" In "Through God's Eyes," Phil Bolsta has assembled a Dream Team of spiritual wisdom. The book gathers together remarkable luminaries from every tradition-and non-tradition as well-and creatively organizes them into topical categories, like panelists in separate meeting rooms at a large conference; only these wise ones are available to readers any time they are needed. And we all need them. As we make our way along the spiritual path, with all its perplexities, complexities, mysteries, and ambiguities, these trusted companions can provide reliable, timeless guidance. Philip Goldberg, author of "American Veda" At first glance, this monstrous 538-page book appears to be a collection of inspirational quotes from cultural icons as well as sages throughout the ages. However, as you read the book carefully, you will be pleasantly surprised to discover that it actually provides a detailed road map for your spiritual quest for a meaningful and harmonious life. Here lies the genius of Bolsta-he makes the profound look simple and his simple steps can lead to profound changes in individuals and society. Dr. Paul Wong, author of "The Human Quest for Meaning" One of the most important books I've ever read. An incredible compilation of spiritual wisdom and insight. It's the owner's manual God should give you when you're born. Robert Peterson, author of "Out of Body Experiences"

Book excerpt: Cure your kids of the entitlement epidemic so they develop happier, more productive attitudes that will carry them into a successful adulthood. Whenever Amy McCready mentions the "entitlement epidemic" to a group of parents, she is inevitably met with eye rolls, nodding heads, and loaded comments about affected children. It seems everywhere one looks, there are preschoolers who only behave in the grocery store for a treat, narcissistic teenagers posting selfies across all forms of social media, and adult children living off their parents. Parenting expert McCready reveals in this book that the solution is to help kids develop healthy attitudes in life. By setting up limits with consequences and training them in responsible behavior and decision making, parents can rid their homes of the entitlement epidemic and raise confident, resilient, and successful children. Whether parents are starting from scratch with a young toddler or navigating the teen years, they will find in this book proven strategies to effectively quell entitled attitudes in their children.

Book excerpt: After my fathers passing I was given a box containing just about all the letters my mother wrote to him. I always thought how nice it would be to be able to read them and possibly have them compiled and saved for our family. It was some years later after I became retired that I was in the mood to really sit down and begin the arduous job of trying to read the small handwriting that had been written decades earlier. There was no order to the box her letters. Some were in the original envelopes, some were crammed four or five together in one envelope or just bound loosely. Gloria did not date all of her letters and a time element had to be studied before transcribing them on the computer could begin. Having mom within driving distance or phone call away I was fortunate to be able to see if she could recall any details that I missed, names and places, or words that I could not read legibly. Even with early memory problems in her glory years Gloria was able to come through for me most of the times to get the context in order. After completing and rereading her letters it occurred to me that this type of communication will not be seen again by future generations who live in the 'cyber-world'. The art of penning and expressing oneself on paper is a dying art so-to-speak. Her letters are now a treasure of history; with all the small details and twists of growing up a teen and tidbits of life during late 1943 to mid 1945.
