Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a manor in Maryland, thirteen guests gather to celebrate Halloween—but before the party is over, only twelve are left alive . . . Halloween night, 1928. It has been years since a group of friends, all of them witty, well-dressed, and wealthy, have gathered at the house known as Lady Court—and since one of their own died tragically young. But despite the haunting memory of poor Sylvia and the secrets still lurking among them, the old friends’ appear to be in high spirits. Amid the laughter, they play holiday-themed games, one of which requires the lights to be turned off. It is during this brief darkness that one of their party is murdered. Now, as a storm rages and knocks the telephone line out, the atmosphere of fun and flirtation turns to fear, and the rest of the night will be spent trying to unmask a killer . . . “Hart . . . has inlaid her mystery with a filigree of wit and romance.” —Time

Book excerpt: Life Is Never Mainly About Love and Marriage. So Learn to Live and Date for More. Many of you grew up assuming that marriage would meet all of your needs and unlock God's purposes for you. But God has far more planned for you than your future marriage. Not Yet Married is not about waiting quietly in the corner of the world for God to bring you "the one," but about inspiring you to live and date for more now. If you follow Jesus, the search for a spouse is no longer a pursuit of the perfect person, but a pursuit of more of God. He will likely write a love story for you different than the one you would write for yourself, but that's because he loves you and knows how to write a better story. This book was written to help you find real hope, happiness, and purpose in your not-yet-married life.

The pace of life, along with the new front porch of social media, has changed the landscape of our lives. Women have been told for far too long that being on the go and accumulating more things will make their lives full. As a result, we grasp for the wrong things in life and come up empty. God created us to walk with him; to know him and to be loved by him. He is our living well and when we drink from the water he continually provides, it will change us. Our marriages, our parenting, and our homemaking will be transformed. Mommy-blogger Courtney Joseph is a cheerful realist. She tackles the challenge of holding onto vintage values in a modern world, starting with the keys to protecting our walk with God. No subject is off-limits as she moves on to marriage, parenting, and household management. Rooted in the Bible, her practical approach includes tons of tips that are perfect for busy moms, including: Simple Solutions for Studying God’s Word How to Handle Marriage, Parenting, and Homemaking in a Digital Age 10 Steps to Completing Your Husband Dealing With Disappointed Expectations in Motherhood Creating Routines that Bring Rest Pursuing the Discipline and Diligence of the Proverbs 31 Woman There is nothing more important than fostering your faith, building your marriage, training your children, and creating a haven for your family. Women Living Well is a clear and personal guide to making the most of these precious responsibilities.

This book was released on 2005-09-09 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching pastors, ministers, and priests know how quickly Sundays come and go. The Lectionary Commentary will not slow the pace of the weekly calendar, but it will help assure that sermon preparation begins with a solid engagement with Scripture. Designed to "jump start" the difficult task of sermon preparation, this indispensable three-volume work gathers exegetical essays on biblical texts from the Revised Common Lectionary. Covering every Sunday of the three-year liturgical cycle, as well as Christmas Day, Epiphany, and Ascension Day, the readings are arranged in canonical order so as to be of use to all preachers. Seventy-eight pastors, priests, and teachers from a variety of Christian traditions have contributed their insights to The Lectionary Commentary. Designed to answer the question What does the preacher need to know about this text in order to preach a faithful sermon from it?, each of their essays closely considers its specific biblical text, all the while remaining alert to the contemporary context in which the sermon will be spoken and heard. The result is an invaluable resource that will aid in the difficult task of facilitating a meaningful encounter between Holy Scripture and our modern world. This volume, The First Readings: Old Testament and Acts, provides exegetical commentary on the lectionary readings from Genesis to Malachi, and from the first seventeen chapters of Acts. Also unique to this volume is an excellent essay by Hughes Oliphant Old on preaching as worship. Consulting Editors: Richard A. Burridge Thomas W. Gillespie Colin E. Gunton Robert W. Jenson James F. Kay Hughes Oliphant Old Fleming Rutledge Marguerite Shuster

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shame lies to us, robs us of the freedom we long for, and shackles us in the prison of our past. To the feelings of shame in our lives, author and teacher Christine Caine has something urgent to say: shame has no place in the purpose, plan, and destiny God has for you. Do you ever struggle with the fear that you are not enough? Are you ever afraid to let your true self be seen and known? Are you often trying to gain approval? Do you want to break the power of shame in your life? In this five-session video Bible study (DVD/digital video sold separately), Caine shows how God heals us and redeems us by weaving examples from her life with those of women and men from the Bible who failed but ultimately overcame their shame. In her passionate style, Christine Caine wants to show you a way out of shame by helping you rediscover the power of God to overcome our mistakes, our inadequacies, our pasts, our limitations...to make way for us to discover our unique purpose and powerful destiny. Sessions include: Run, Don't Hide – Identifying the types of shame and laying open the effects and sources of shame. Today Is the Day – How do we actually begin the process of recovering from shame? Posses Your Inheritance – Opening our eyes to the very real and present power Jesus Christ has over shame. What God wants us to experience instead and how. God Never Wastes a Hurt – How God uses our wounds for our good and how we can learn to see it his way. Highly Unlikely – The enemy's tactics vs. God's methods. How looking at the stories of those in the Bible provide a way forward for us today. God has already won the victory over sin and shame, and we do not need to spend our lives believing lies. Instead, we can be defined by God's truth and choose to see ourselves the way God does--through the lens of his eternal perspective. So join the journey. You can live unashamed! Book excerpt: You have probably been accustomed to regard the war between England and her colonies in America as one in which we were not only beaten but, to some extent, humiliated. Owing to the war having been an unsuccessful one for our arms, British writers have avoided the subject, and it has been left for American historians to describe. These, writing for their own countrymen, and drawing for their facts upon gazettes, letters, and other documents emanating from one side only, have, naturally, and no doubt insensibly, given a very strong color to their own views of the events, and English writers have been too much inclined to accept their account implicitly. There is, however, another and very different side to the story, and this I have endeavored to show you. The whole of the facts and details connected with the war can be relied upon as accurate. They are drawn from the valuable account of the struggle written by Major Steadman, who served under Howe, Clinton, and Cornwallis, and from other authentic contemporary sources. You will see that, although unsuccessful,--and success was, under the circumstances, a sheer impossibility,--the British troops fought with a bravery which was never exceeded, and that their victories in actual conflict vastly outnumbered their defeats. Indeed, it may be doubted whether in any war in which this country has been engaged have our soldiers exhibited the qualities of endurance and courage to a higher degree.
