Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Dickinson, one of the most important American poets of the nineteenth century, remains an intriguing and fascinating writer. The Cambridge Companion to Emily Dickinson includes eleven new essays by accomplished Dickinson scholars. They cover Dickinson's biography, publication history, poetic themes and strategies, and her historical and cultural contexts. As a woman poet, Dickinson's literary persona has become incredibly resonant in the popular imagination. She has been portrayed as singular, enigmatic, and even eccentric. At the same time, Dickinson is widely acknowledged as one of the founders of American poetry, an innovative pre-modernist poet as well as a rebellious and courageous woman. This volume introduces new and practised readers to a variety of critical responses to Dickinson's poetry and life, and provides several valuable tools for students, including a chronology and suggestions for further reading.

Book excerpt: Plant pathogens, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, insect pests, etc., can pose a great threat to plants in agricultural and natural ecosystems worldwide. The plant disease triangle illustrates that pathogenesis in the plant is not only the outcome of the interactions between the plant host and pathogens but also the consequence of their interactions with the microbiomes associated with plant hosts and pathogens. Both microbiomes associated with plant host and pathogen regulate plant health and pathogen infection. Microbes can play an important role in promoting plant growth, and protecting from pathogens and/or insects. A healthy plant microbiome is crucial for plant survival, production, nutrient acquisition, abiotic or biotic stress tolerance, etc. However, the microbiome does not always cooperatively interact with plant hosts to promote host health. They may also deter plant health or promote pathogenicity by the production of toxins, suppressing plant innate immunity, or building a symbiotic or mutual relationship with pathogens or insect pests to facilitate the occurrence of plant disease. In addition, the disease can result in a plant if a susceptible host plant is in intimate association with a virulent pathogen under favorable or altered abiotic or biotic environmental conditions. For example, growing evidence suggests disease occurrence in plants is often accompanied by changes in the associated microbial community structure, composition, and even function.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to improve communication between disciplines in this field, we have aimed to cover what we perceive to be all relevant aspects of photooxidative stress: from primary reactions to molecular genetics and the devising of strategies for engineering stress tolerance in plants. We hope to achieve a forum for new ideas, concepts, and approaches. The intellectual challenge also arose because we wished to produce a work that was accessible to both specialist and nonspecialist. We have encouraged our authors to provide personal perspectives of their topics while discussing them in depth. To this end, the nonspecialist will find that some chapters include relatively simple introductions and conclusions, e.g., Foyer and Harbinson (Chapter 1); Gressel and Galun (Chapter 10).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish writing has been influenced by religion from the beginning; indeed it was the arrival of Christianity which brought Latin orthography, which men of learning adopted. Pagan beliefs were assimilated into Christianity, but not entirely so: a theme which is dealt with in the essay on writing in early Ireland. The relationship between the various Irish Churches and writers in the 18th and 19th centuries is examined as is the influence of folk religion in modern Irish literature. There follow essays on: ghosts, Yeats, Synge, Joyce and Beckett; and on the poets Macneice, Kavanagh and Desmond Egan. Contributors: Lance St. John Butler; Peter Denman; Desmond Egan; Ruth Fleischmann; A. M. Gibbs; Barbara Hayley; Eamonn Hughes; Anne McCartney; Seamus MacMathuna; Joseph McMinn; Nuala ni Dhomhnaill; Mitsuko Ohno; Daithi O Hogain; Alan Peacock; Patricia Rafroidi and Robert Welch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Dickinson is an unlikely patron saint for all who seek or wrestle with God. Looking closely at twenty-five poems, this intimate portrait and personal reflection shows how Dickinson can guide us, through belief and doubt alike, toward God. Many have thought that Dickinson, one of America's greatest poets, rejected religion. Yet the poems that unfold her soul can inspire ours, offering fresh answers to ultimate questions about life and death, faith and doubt, Jesus and God. In chapters on belief, prayer, mortality, immortality, and beauty, Kristin LeMay traces the dimensions of Dickinson's spiritual life and tells the story of her own search for God between the lines of the poems that Dickinson called "hymns." Praise for I Told My Soul to Sing “Exuberant and captivating. A shimmering jewel of a book.” –Dinty W. Moore “Through her deep engagement with Dickinson’s poems—by turn prayers, partners, revelations, songs—LeMay has written a book that is, in Dickinson’s words, ‘the Heart’s portrait – every Page a Pulse,’ every page a kind of faith.” – Sarah Sentilles, author of Breaking Up with God: A Love Story “Part spiritual autobiography, part homage to Dickinson’s inexhaustible poetic genius, and part exuberant close readings of the astonishing poems in which she wrestles with questions of faith and belief, I Told My Soul to Sing is a valuable study of the poet’s heterodox imagination. LeMay does not shackle Dickinson to a procrustean bed of doctrine and piety, dilute the poet’s astringent ironies, or flatten the provocative ambiguities. She has a gift for choosing unfamiliar poems from the canon and for judiciously quoting and interpreting them. A smart, seriously playful, winning, and readable commentary on a quintessentially elusive, thorny, and linguistically daring American poet.” – Herbert Leibowitz, editor, Parnassus: Poetry in Review “LeMay’s implied reader is someone attracted to religious faith, but even an atheist can enjoy this book’s provocative illuminations of spiritual longing, fear, and anger, in which questions cut deeper than answers.” – Mark Halliday, poet, author of Keep This Forever and Stevens and the Interpersonal “A brilliant analysis of the bond between life and poetry, written with sensitivity and talent.” – François Bovon, Frothingham Professor of the History of Religion Emeritus, Harvard Divinity School
