Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip is a Christian who works for NASDA and is in charge of the Hobble Telescope. He makes some filters for the telescope that enable him to view the dark matter that exists in the universe. Then he discovers that the dark matter, which has the shape of ovals, have been video-recording everything that has ever happened in the universe. He learns how to access these recordings. The first thing he views is the creation of the world. After the creation of man, there was a population explosion that caused the whole Earth to be filled in a relatively short period of time. Just think what would happen if everyone, having the same intelligence that we have, lived to be eight hundred to nine hundred years old and there was no birth control! Who stops to think that Cain and Abel would have been over a hundred years old at the time that Cain killed Abel and that Eve would have had over fifty more children by that time and that the population of the world by that time could have been over ten thousand? A large portion of the novel presents the five hundred years of Noah's life before the Great Flood. The novel, without violating Scripture, shows that mankind before the flood was very advanced in technology. It proposes a very different explanation for the existence of UFOs than most people imagine. Human beings living on the Earth had succeeded in finding a way to overcome gravity and inertia, had traveled to outer space, and had established colonies on the moon and Mars! The novel contains a great deal of romance and has a surprise ending. 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dark Matters Simone Browne locates the conditions of blackness as a key site through which surveillance is practiced, narrated, and resisted. She shows how contemporary surveillance technologies and practices are informed by the long history of racial formation and by the methods of policing black life under slavery, such as branding, runaway slave notices, and lantern laws. Placing surveillance studies into conversation with the archive of transatlantic slavery and its afterlife, Browne draws from black feminist theory, sociology, and cultural studies to analyze texts as diverse as the methods of surveilling blackness she discusses: from the design of the eighteenth-century slave ship Brooks, Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon, and The Book of Negroes, to contemporary art, literature, biometrics, and post-9/11 airport security practices. Surveillance, Browne asserts, is both a discursive and material practice that reifies boundaries, borders, and bodies around racial lines, so much so that the surveillance of blackness has long been, and continues to be, a social and political norm.

Book excerpt: Rob Marshal is accused of murdering his friend, Petrosian who, shortly before his death, had given him the only copy of his theory of a hitherto unsuspected physical property of the universe. By various means, Marshal is lead unknowingly into discovering these properties and more at first hand. During the course of his adventures he meets with treachery, kidnappings and further murders; he travels through parts of the solar system and to remote areas of the earth. He becomes acquainted with events of the past and age-old aspects of human nature: love and hate, envy, greed and revenge. Can he survive the threats of death pitted against him by nature and man? Can he rescue his beloved? Can he prove his innocence? Can he come to terms with the strange physical nature of the universe into which he is thrown? The answers could not be anticipated.

Their invention, a camera that images dark matter, has had its first successful test; but what it reveals may put human life on Mars in jeopardy. Hal believes that the strange animalistic silhouettes hidden in the dark matter web prove his theories. The wiry, inhuman forms appear to look to the sky at some invisible threat before they’re wiped away by a wave of nothingness that resets the dark matter web to normal, until it all repeats again—a never-ending cycle. That is, until something else appears in the dark matter web, and students and colonists alike start dying under mysterious circumstances. Can Hal and Akio figure out what's causing these grisly murders, and does the dark matter camera somehow hold the key to the mystery? Echoes of Olympus Mons is for anyone who's ever wanted a Lovecraftian horror story set on Mars, like Lovecraft's From Beyond and John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars.

Book excerpt: Astrophysical observations implying the existence of Dark Matter and Dark Energy, which are not described by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, have led to extensions of the SM predicting new particles that could be directly produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Based on 2015 and 2016 ATLAS proton-proton collision data, this thesis presents searches for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, for Dark Matter, and for DarkEnergy, in signatures with jets and missing transverse energy. Muon detection is key to some of the most important LHC physics results, including the discovery of the Higgs boson and the measurement of its properties. The efficiency with which muons can be detected with the ATLAS detector is measured using Z boson decays. The performance of high-precision Monitored Drift Tube muon chambers under background rates similar to the ones expected for the High Luminosity-LHC is studied.

In this book, the third in the Zen and the Art Of series, Mixerman distills the inescapable technical realities of recording down to understandable and practical terms. Whether musician or self-taught recordist, whether at home or in a full-blown studio complex, you'll discover a definitive blueprint for recording within the current realities of the business, without ever losing focus on the core consideration the music itself. As Mixerman writes: "The moment you start to think in musical terms, your recordings will improve a hundredfold." This enhanced multimedia e-book edition brings recordists deeper into the concepts covered in the text. It features over an hour's worth of supplemental videos in which Mixerman demonstrates various recording techniques in a number of recording spaces. The clips provide invaluable insight into what to listen for when choosing gear and placing mics, and Mixerman walks us through all of this in well over an hour of clips. This multimedia eBook is an absolute must-have for anyone who enjoys recording music and wants to get better doing it. "Mixerman has done it again! With his signature humorous and entertaining style, he imparts a world of invaluable information for the aspiring recordist and musician in an easy to absorb (not overly technical) common sense manner." Ron Saint Germain (300+ million in sales, U2, Whitney Houston, 311) " Zen and the Art of Recording describes an approach rather than a recipe. This is important because in the real world nothing works the same way every time. This is an excellent overview of the issues to be considered along with a broad variety of proven techniques for addressing them." Bob Olhsson (Stevie Wonder, Jackson Five, Marvin Gaye) "It's the videos here that really drive the narrative." Aardvark (Producer of The Daily Adventures of Mixerman Audiobook and Zen RPM ) "In the absence of an opportunity to apprentice in a major recording studio, this book is the next best thing. A way to learn from the best." William Wittman (Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, The Fixx)

Book excerpt: Scientific theory holds that ninety percent of all matter in the universe is "dark matter", which we cannot see but which exerts a gravitational force. The universe seems to be perfectly balanced at the critical density which counters the outward expansion of the galaxies with their inward gravitational pull on one another. Too much matter or too little could bring about the end of the universe - and an alien species has begun to import dark matter from a parallel universe into our own in an attempt to do just that! Unknowingly, a contaminated USS Voyager has been leaving a trail of the deadly material across the Delta Quadrant ever since their first meeting with Romulan scientist Telek R'Mor. Now Captain Janeway and her crew are forced to retrace their epic journey to recover lost quantities of the dark matter, encountering old foes and allies while striving to outrace the cataclysmic doom which threatens not one but two realities. Malevolent forces plot against Voyager's quest... Meanwhile, Commander Chakotay and Ensign Paris are still cut off from contact with their captain, their ship - and their universe!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it in our nature to be altruistic, or evil, to make art, use tools, or create language? Is it in our nature to think in any particular way? For Daniel L. Everett, the answer is a resounding no: it isn’t in our nature to do any of these things because human nature does not exist—at least not as we usually think of it. Flying in the face of major trends in Evolutionary Psychology and related fields, he offers a provocative and compelling argument in this book that the only thing humans are hardwired for is freedom: freedom from evolutionary instinct and freedom to adapt to a variety of environmental and cultural contexts. Everett sketches a blank-slate picture of human cognition that focuses not on what is in the mind but, rather, what the mind is in—namely, culture. He draws on years of field research among the Amazonian people of the Pirahã in order to carefully scrutinize various theories of cognitive instinct, including Noam Chomsky’s foundational concept of universal grammar, Freud’s notions of unconscious forces, Adolf Bastian’s psychic unity of mankind, and works on massive modularity by evolutionary psychologists such as Leda Cosmides, John Tooby, Jerry Fodor, and Steven Pinker. Illuminating unique characteristics of the Pirahã language, he demonstrates just how differently various cultures can make us think and how vital culture is to our cognitive flexibility. Outlining the ways culture and individual psychology operate symbiotically, he posits a Buddhist-like conception of the cultural self as a set of experiences united by various apperceptions, episodic memories, ranked values, knowledge structures, and social roles—and not, in any shape or form, biological instinct. The result is fascinating portrait of the “dark matter of the mind,” one that shows that our greatest evolutionary adaptation is adaptability itself.
