Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dahlia Manual: A Treatise on Dahlia Culture The Dahlia derives its name from the Swedish botanist, Dr. Dahl, but for a time was also known under the name of Georgina, after Prof. George, of St. Petersburg. Its earliest known history is not yet very old. About the year -657 Francisco Hernandez, a Spanish physician, wrote a book on plants, and among the plants de scribed he mentions Dahlia variabilis, the species from which most, if not all, of our pres ent varieties have originated. At that time it is probable that it was only known as one of the great multitude of botanical plants. Without much, if any, thought of its future usefulness, for we find nothing further in print for l3o years. It is quite probable, how ever, that some effort was made to improve and domesticate the plant toward the close of the eighteenth century, for in l787 Nicholas Joseph Thirerry de Menonville, a Frenchman, published an account of the Dahlias he had seen growing in the gardens in Mexico. Two years later, l7 89, seeds were sent from the Botanic Gardens of Mex ico to the Royal Gardens at Madrid, Spain, where it was given its present name. This lot of seedlings was lost two years later, as were several other lots sent to various places. But their stay, though brief, awakened a deep interest in the plant and its possibilities, and further attempts at its cultivation were now made in several European countries and it soon became quite popular. The work bestowed upon it, however, seems to have been more in the nature of a fad rather than intelligent study. Difficulty seems to have been encountered also in knowing how to keep the roots over to the next season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Capitol City Dahlias and Cultural Directions, 1926 To the novice in dahlia growing we commend our cultural directions as being entirely adequate to success. Handled in the manner therein sug gested, and with good varieties to begin with, there is no reason why anyone may not have dahlias equally as fine and large as are found at the dahlias shows, or in the exhibition gardens. These directions are written in response to many requests and also with a View to being of service. In the course of a year we write many letters of advice on dahlia growing. This is a service which we gladly render to anyone wishing it whether patron or not. If you have any problems we will gladly help in their solution on request. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cultural Notes: Dahlias for Delight My plan is to plow the ground in the fall of the year, after harvesting the tubers, and sow to winter rye; this will give your ground Wln ter protection and give a green manure to plow under in the spring. This is a mighty satisfactory method, as I am able to get some humus into the soil, which aids in moisture holding during the dry growing season and helps to keep a mellow soil condition. I use unleached hardwood ashes and a very light covering of 4 - 6 - 10 commercial fertilizer, to keep a balanced soil condition, and proper plant food, with lime at the rate of 500 pounds per acre every second year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dahlias, 1928 As for my own Dahlias - and they are the ones I am principally concerned in selling, you know - after going about to the big Fall shows in the East, where I go both to judge and to make newer selections, I return home with the feeling of satisfaction that I grow Dahlias as well as most of those I have seen on exhibition. From my customers scattered throughout the land, I get most enthusiastic reports of their successes, not only in the gardens but also at their competitive Shows. And now I must tell you a joke which does not bring discredit upon my Dahlias. The present President of the Dahlia Society of California gave a Dahlia talk at our State University, last Sum mer. He used a lot of my blooms to illustrate his talk. In a burst of confi dence he said to me: To tell you frankly, Doctor, I saw no better Dahlias than yours out at our Dahlia Show in California, this year. Then, that naive spirit so noticeable amongst the people of Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and California flamed forth with this: But, this year (1927) was not a very good season in California! (all right, Curtis old dear, we are even!) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I try to show, in one catalog, the leading varieties listed by all the leading growers. After such varie ties the name of the originator appears - credit where credit is due. In some cases I give the year of introduction. Any dahlia that is in demand year after year is usually a pretty good dahlia.
