Book excerpt: 2017 ECPA Christian Book Award Finalist (Biography and Memoir category) What happens after the worst happens? Before May 31, 2008, September Vaudrey’s life was beautiful. But on that day, with one phone call from the ER, her whole world—everything she knew and believed—was shaken to the core. Katie, her 19-year-old artist daughter, had been in a car accident and would not survive. How does a family live in the wake of devastating tragedy? When darkness colors every moment, is it possible to find light? Can God still be good, even after goodbye? With the depth of C. S. Lewis’s A Grief Observed and the poignancy of Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking, Colors of Goodbye offers a moving glimpse into a mother’s heart. Combining literary narrative and raw reflection, September Vaudrey walks through one of life’s worst losses—the death of a child—and slowly becomes open to watching for the unexpected ways God carries her through it. It’s a story of love and tragedy in tandem; a deeply personal memoir from a life forever changed by one empty place. And at its core, Colors of Goodbye calls to the deepest part of our spirits to know that death is not the end . . . and that life can be beautiful still.

If you often find yourself asking such questions while proofreading your manuscript or someone else's, you'll find the answers right here. Kathy Ide's Capitalization Dictionary is an alphabetical list of words that writers and editors often wonder about when it comes to capitalization rules. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the most brutal crime committed by the Japanese military during the Asia-Pacific war was the forced mobilization of 50,000 to 200,000 Asian women to military brothels to sexually serve Japanese soldiers. The majority of these women died, unable to survive the ordeal. Those survivors who came back home kept silent about their brutal experiences for about fifty years. In the late 1980s, the women’s movement in South Korea helped start the redress movement for the victims, encouraging many survivors to come forward to tell what happened to them. With these testimonies, the redress movement gained strong support from the UN, the United States, and other Western countries. Korean “Comfort Women” synthesizes the previous major findings about Japanese military sexual slavery and legal recommendations, and provides new findings about the issues “comfort women” faced for an English-language audience. It also examines the transnational redress movement, revealing that the Japanese government has tried to conceal the crime of sexual slavery and to resolve the women’s human rights issue with diplomacy and economic power.

Also included are rarely found items such as:• an author’s guide to obtaining permissions• guidelines for using American, British, and Mid-Atlantic styles• discussions of inclusive language, profanity, and ethnic sensitivities• discussions of Internet and computer-related language style• a list of problem words• style issues regarding words from major world religions• a discussion of handling brand names in text• a list of common interjections• issues of type design, paper, copy-fitThis edition has been completely updated since the 1988 edition and contains more than twice as much information as the previous edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the upheavals of the Reformation, one of the most significant of the radical Protestant movements emerged — that of the Anabaptist movement. Profiles of Anabaptist Women provides lively, well-researched profiles of the courageous women who chose to risk prosecution and martyrdom to pursue this unsanctioned religion — a religion that, unlike the established religions of the day, initially offered them opportunity and encouragement to proselytize. Derived from sixteenth-century government records and court testimonies, hymns, songs and poems, these profiles provide a panorama of life and faith experiences of women from Switzerland, Germany, Holland and Austria. These personal stories of courage, faith, commitment and resourcefulness interweave women’s lives into the greater milieu, relating them to the dominant male context and the socio-political background of the Reformation. Taken together, these sketches will give readers an appreciation for the central role played by Anabaptist women in the emergence and persistence of this radical branch of Protestantism.

Book excerpt: Tyler is commercially legitimate and free of his gambling debts, although outrageous good luck and risky legerdemain played a major part. Yet, two years on, he somehow finds himself being pursued over Aintrees Grand National fences, at night and without a horse. Someone in authority believes he is in cahoots with his ex-mate Blackie who has absconded with some very damaging information. When, back in South Wales, he eventually chances upon this highly incriminating evidence that Blackie has slyly secreted, he finds himself embroiled in a major drugs dealing concern, organised under-age sex and the blue movie business. A body turns up in the boot of his car and only quick thinking allows him to dispose of the corpse before a couple of very suspect policemen come knocking his door. All he can do is use his considerable guile and street-wise talents to give the impression of complete innocence while frantically covering the tracks he has made wriggling out of any perceived association. He has a kidnap and recue bid to deal with, another body to confuse the opposition and some improbably choreographed mayhem on the golf course before he can even begin to effect the only conclusion that will clear him of any links (no pun). Bluff and double bluff is the name of Tylers game and his success or terminal failure depends on how well he plays his hand.
