Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Acre, powerfully fortified and richly provisioned, was the last crusader stronghold. When it fell in 1291, two hundred years of Christian crusading in the Holy Land came to a bloody end. With his customary narrative brilliance and immediacy, Roger Crowley chronicles the tumultuous and violent attack on Acre, the heaviest bombardment before the age of gunpowder, which left this once great Mediterranean city a crumbling ruin. The ‘Accursed Tower’ was the focal point of this siege. As the last garrison of the Crusader defences, it came to symbolise the disintegration of the old world and the rise of a new era of Islamic jihad. Crowley’s narrative is based on forensic research, drawing heavily on little known first hand sources, both Christian and Arabic. This is a fast-paced and gripping account of a pivotal moment in world history.

But his battle to gain the throne is only the first of many that he and Eileanan must face. Maya, who wrought such terrible persecution upon Eileanan's witches and fairy creatures, has disappeared. Despite having played a crucial role in his victory, Isabeau feels increasingly uneasy at Lachlan's court. She has taken responsibility for Maya's baby, Bronwen, and fears her brother-in-law's jealousy of the child. Once again she must take to the road, though the road she travels this time is unlike any other . . . Under the watchful eyes of the dragons, Isabeau and Bronwen make their home at the crumbling Towers of Roses and Thorns deep in the mountains. It is there that Isabeau will discover her true heritage – and the true nature of the dragons. As Lachlan seeks support throughout Eileanan, his armies continue to fight the invading Tìrsoilleirean soldiers. Meanwhile, Maya has kept herself well-hidden and makes plans to regain her baby and her power. However in the aloof Margrit of Arran she finds a dangerous ally, and in the end aid comes to her from a most unexpected direction . . . The Cursed Towers is the third book in the series The Witches of Eileanan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manhattan skyline is one of the great wonders of the modern world. But how and why did it form? Much has been written about the city's architecture and its general history, but little work has explored the economic forces that created the skyline. In Building the Skyline, Jason Barr chronicles the economic history of the Manhattan skyline. In the process, he debunks some widely held misconceptions about the city's history. Starting with Manhattan's natural and geological history, Barr moves on to how these formations influenced early land use and the development of neighborhoods, including the dense tenement neighborhoods of Five Points and the Lower East Side, and how these early decisions eventually impacted the location of skyscrapers built during the Skyscraper Revolution at the end of the 19th century. Barr then explores the economic history of skyscrapers and the skyline, investigating the reasons for their heights, frequencies, locations, and shapes. He discusses why skyscrapers emerged downtown and why they appeared three miles to the north in midtown-but not in between the two areas. Contrary to popular belief, this was not due to the depths of Manhattan's bedrock, nor the presence of Grand Central Station. Rather, midtown's emergence was a response to the economic and demographic forces that were taking place north of 14th Street after the Civil War. Building the Skyline also presents the first rigorous investigation of the causes of the building boom during the Roaring Twenties. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the boom was largely a rational response to the economic growth of the nation and city. The last chapter investigates the value of Manhattan Island and the relationship between skyscrapers and land prices. Finally, an Epilogue offers policy recommendations for a resilient and robust future skyline.

Amidst his struggles with a smoking habit and haunting depression, Milton’s path crosses with Rashalika, the High Demonlord, who intriguingly sees potential in Milton for his mystical cult. As Milton is thrust into a fierce power struggle, he finds himself between Quesha, the ruthless High Demonlady, and Rashalika, who, despite his quest for dominance over the interplanetary portals, aspires to reach the ethical pinnacle of the garden of Sequa. Torn between affections for the sentient mechoid Karen, whose own mission to extract his rare DNA evolves into something tender, and the enchanting Demonlady Carmelia, wielding a hypnotic flute, Milton faces choices that transcend realms. As the narrative unfolds, Milton must navigate a labyrinth of love, loyalty, and identity – where the heart’s direction is as mysterious as the stars themselves.

The book is the first attempt to amalgamate economics with poetry, mythologies, novels, paintings, and movies that pertain to economic subjects. It presents the principles of economics in a systematic manner, but in plain and lyrical English. Through analysing real-world issues using solid economic theory, and literary prose, the topics discussed in the book allow for a straight to the point analysis which can be used by all. The book serves as a guide to college undergraduate and MBA students who are beginning to study economics and as a navigator to lay readers including financial practitioners, fund managers, and portfolio investors who need economics knowledge in their chosen fields. The book introduces 22 European, American, Chinese, Japanese and Korean poems which are related to economic subjects.
