Book excerpt: Curry is one of the most widely used—and misused—terms in the culinary lexicon. Outside of India, the word curry is often used as a catchall to describe any Indian dish or Indian food in general, yet Indians rarely use it to describe their own cuisine. Curry answers the question, “What is curry?” by giving a lively historical and descriptive account of a dish that has many incarnations. In this global history, food writer Colleen Taylor Sen describes in detail the Anglo-Indian origins of curry and how this widely used spice has been adapted throughout the world. Exploring the curry universe beyond India and Great Britain, her chronicles include the elegant, complex curries of Thailand; the exuberant curry/rotis of the Caribbean; kari/raisu, Japan’s favorite comfort food; Indonesian gulais and rendang; Malaysia’s delicious Nonya cuisine; and exotic Western hybrids such as American curried chicken salad, German currywurst, and Punjabi-Mexican-Hindu pizza. Along the way, Sen unravels common myths about curry and Indian food and illuminates the world of curry with excerpts from popular songs, literary works, historical and modern recipes, and illustrations depicting curry dishes and their preparations. A vibrant, flavorful book about an increasingly popular food, Curry will find a wide audience of cooking enthusiasts and hungry fans of Indian food.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey "Kid Curry" Logan was an outlaw, gunfighter and infamous member of the Butch Cassidy gang. With more than fifteen killings attributed to him, and given his involvement in the Butch Cassidy gang, "Kid Curry" was as renowned a figure as you were likely to find west of the Mississippi. Short of stature yet enormous in reputation, after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fled for South America, Logan became the most wanted outlaw in the United States. He was finally captured--only to escape from his Tennessee prison in 1903. Until now little has been readily known about the man nicknamed the "tiger of the wild bunch." With unique access to the research, author Gary Wilson deftly separates fact from fiction, providing readers with a complete and authoritative biography.

This book is about my children’s mysteries written between the ages of 9 and 16. The years would have been 1975 to 1982. During this time, I was completely oblivious to a terrible truth about myself. I was living in Daler Cottage, the given name of my childhood home. At the age of 19, I would start a novel called The Lessons. This novel was fuelled by a burning fantasy world that was eating me up inside. For the next thirty years, I would struggle with this novel, unaware of this truth. The story of The Lessons is covered in my other book. Prior to my novel-writing phase, I was writing these mysteries as well as painting and devising plays. I kept a diary between 1977 and 1988, during which I attained a degree in Fine Art. I would continue to write and paint for many years to come. My diaries illuminate the circumstances surrounding the writing of my children’s stories. Unknown to me, clues to this horrific truth have leaked into all my creations like oil bubbling up through the ground. At the age of 51, I finally learned the truth. This book describes the decoding process to find the true meaning behind my children’s mysteries. Due to the nature of this book, names and certain details have been altered in order to protect identities and I am writing under a pseudonym. With images throughout.

Book excerpt: Since his time as a starring college player on the Davidson Wildcats, Stephen Curry has been one of the most exciting basketball stars in the United States. His poise on the court and his record-breaking ability to make three-point shots have helped him lead the National Basketball Association's Golden State Warriors to multiple league championships. This volume traces Curry's rise from his youth as the undersized son of NBA star Dell Curry to his status as a basketball superstar famous for making seemingly impossible shots, while also examining his commitment to his family and his charitable projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of women's work, rhetorical agency, and the construction of female reputation Before the full and honest tale of humanity can be told, it will be necessary to uncover the hidden roles of women in it and recover their voices from the forces that have diminished their contributions or even at times deliberately eclipsed them. The past half-century has seen women rise to claim their equal portion of recognition, and Remembering Women Differently addresses not only some of those neglected—it examines why they were deliberately erased from history. The contributors in this collection study the contributions of fourteen nearly forgotten women from around the globe working in fields that range from art to philosophy, from teaching to social welfare, from science to the military, and how and why those individuals became either marginalized or discounted in a mostly patriarchal world. These sterling contributors, scholars from a variety of disciplines—rhetoricians, historians, compositionists, and literary critics—employ feminist research methods in examining women's work, rhetorical agency, and the construction of female reputation. By recovering these voices and remembering the women whose contributions have made our civilization better and more whole, this work seeks to ensure that women's voices are never silenced again.

Book excerpt: How should a national park be managed? Among all of the debates affecting America’s national parks, none has proved more enduring. Nor has any park, Alfred Runte reminds us, been in the spotlight more than Yosemite. Its cast of characters is especially rich, including James Mason Hutchings, Galen Clark, Frederick Law Olmsted, John Muir, David Brower, Joseph Grinnell, George M. Wright, and Ansel Adams. Not only was Yosemite the centerpiece of their careers, it was also the wellspring of their passion for nature. Now fully revised and updated, Yosemite: The Embattled Wilderness continues their story, from Yosemite’s path-breaking establishment in 1864 as a grant to California, 1890 expansion into a national park, boundary reductions and loss of the Hetch Hetchy Valley, evolution of wildlife protections and science, management practices threatening Yosemite Valley, and the fight for wilderness to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Epic Athletes: Stephen Curry, acclaimed journalist and bestselling author Dan Wetzel tells the inspiring, electrifying story of the NBA superstar, beginning a new series of sports biographies for young readers! Featuring comic-style illustrations by Zeke Peña! When you think of Stephen Curry, one word comes to mind: greatness. From shooting three-pointers with laser precision to his clutch ability to hit buzzer-beaters time and again, he has established himself as one of the best players in pro basketball. But greatness was never a guarantee for Steph. The son of a talented NBA player, he dreamed of one day playing professionally just like his dad. Yet Steph, who was always smaller and weaker than the competition, was told over and over that he would never be talented enough to be a college star or NBA player--let alone the MVP of the entire league. Through tenacity and hard work, he proved them all wrong and went on to dismantle the record books. With the high energy of a TV commentator, and featuring dynamic comic-style illustrations, this engaging biography tells the story of an NBA All-Star and the path he took to achieve his dreams. * "Wetzel knows how to organize the facts and tell a good story. . . an unusually informative and enjoyable sports biography for young readers." —Booklist (starred review) A Junior Library Guild selection!
