Book Synopsis Biological Invasions in South Africa by : Brian W. van Wilgen
Download or read book Biological Invasions in South Africa written by Brian W. van Wilgen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume presents a comprehensive account of all aspects of biological invasions in South Africa, where research has been conducted over more than three decades, and where bold initiatives have been implemented in attempts to control invasions and to reduce their ecological, economic and social effects. It covers a broad range of themes, including history, policy development and implementation, the status of invasions of animals and plants in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments, the development of a robust ecological theory around biological invasions, the effectiveness of management interventions, and scenarios for the future. The South African situation stands out because of the remarkable diversity of the country, and the wide range of problems encountered in its varied ecosystems, which has resulted in a disproportionate investment into both research and management. The South African experience holds many lessons for other parts of the world, and this book should be of immense value to researchers, students, managers, and policy-makers who deal with biological invasions and ecosystem management and conservation in most other regions.

Book Synopsis The Ecology of River Systems by : Bryan R. Davies
Download or read book The Ecology of River Systems written by Bryan R. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.

Book Synopsis Eels Biology, Monitoring, Management, Culture and Exploitation: Proceedings of the First International Eel Science Symposium by : Andy Don
Download or read book Eels Biology, Monitoring, Management, Culture and Exploitation: Proceedings of the First International Eel Science Symposium written by Andy Don and published by 5m Books Ltd. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The freshwater eels, the Anguillids, have increasingly become the focus of attention for fisheries managers, scientists, researchers, policy makers, conservation bodies and other stakeholders. These species can be seen as a bellwether for issues affecting aquatic ecosystems – their steep decline and the management initiatives to try and reverse this trend, touch on subjects as diverse as disconnected waterways, loss of habitat, novel parasites, pollution, over-fishing and climate change. There are some 16 species of the Anguilla genus and all exhibit similar lifestyles, growing in waters often far-removed from their marine spawning grounds. These enigmatic, contradictory and confounding species share similar challenges and pressures wherever they are found. This book was generated from the 1st UK International Eel Science Symposium which was held at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in June 2017. Hosted by the Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM), the ZSL, and the Environment Agency (EA), the Symposium was heralded as a success, with over 180 delegates in attendance. Many of the world’s top eel specialists attended or gave presentations across a diverse range of subjects. This was one of the Symposium’s, and now the book’s great strengths – its diversity of subjects and authors. Many countries are represented within the book, from across Europe and as far afield as New Zealand, South Africa, Vanuatu, French Polynesia, Japan, Canada and the USA. The EA and IFM have collaborated to produce this landmark book which includes a mix of cultural, scientific and management information which will be invaluable to anyone with a professional or personal interest in these mysterious fish, including ichthyologists, fisheries scientists and managers, aquaculture personnel, environmental biologists and ecologists, marine and freshwater biologists, vertebrate zoologists, animal behaviourists and students studying in all these areas. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies on their shelves. 5m Books

Book excerpt: Captive Seawater Fishes: Science and Technology Stephen Spotte "The book is clearly a labor of love, and one must admire the author's boundless enthusiasm and breadth of scholarship." —New Scientist A seamlessly clear treatise on the science and technology of maintaining seawater fishes for purposes of aquaculture and public exhibition. Captive Seawater Fishes is the first book to bring together in one volume the disciplines of seawater chemistry, process engineering, and fish physiology, behavior, nutrition, and health. Richly illustrating the interplay between living fishes and the chemical and sensory stimuli of their environment, the book details: chemical processes controlling carbonate stability in seawater; the effect of captivity on physiological processes; sensory processes of fishes, including vision, hearing, and electroreception; diseases of seawater fishes and treatment methods; and more. 1991 (0-471-54554-6) 976 pp. Surveys of Fisheries Resources Donald R. Gunderson The intensive exploitation of fisheries resources has heightened the reliance in the industry on statistical surveying as a means of monitoring the abundance and age composition of existing fish reserves. Here is the first comprehensive look at the unique challenges and problems of fisheries surveying. Covering everything from survey design, bottom trawl surveys, acoustic surveys, to egg and larval surveys and direct counts, as well as the assumptions and limitations surrounding each method, the book is an exhaustive, yet practical guide to designing accurate, cost-effective fisheries surveys. 1993 (0-471-54735-2) 256 pp. Aquatic Pollution: An Introductory Text, Second Edition Edward A. Laws Regarded as the most complete introduction available on the subject, Aquatic Pollution details the ecological principles and toxicological fundamentals behind the phenomenon as well as the latest information on the factors affecting our polluted aquatic environment. Featuring case studies and specific examples, the book systematically examines such problems as urban runoff, sewage disposal, thermal pollution, nutrient loading, industrial wastewater discharges, and oil pollution. The new Second Edition includes three new chapters on groundwater pollution. acid rain, and plastics in the sea, as well as updated and expanded information on eutrophication, pathogens in water supplies, radioactive waste disposal, toxic metals, and pesticide use. 1993 (0-471-58883-0) 611 pp.
