Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation of Fruit Trees and Shrubs Our object in presenting to the public this modest treatise on fruit trees, is to popularize the culture of these trees, which once well understood, cannot fail to become a source of large revenue to all who devote themselves to it. For far too long a period have the farmers of the Province of Quebec neglected this matter and even in our day, the cultivation of fruit trees is carried on in a very small way, and principally in the vicinity of large centers. Still owing to the increased facilities of communication, the valnac fruit has considerably improved and the' receipts from a well planted piece of ground 'd materially to the revenue of the farm, as every one will eat fruit, when obtainable at a reasonable price. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Trees, Roses, Shrubs, Etc. And How to Grow Them For fruit trees the soil should be dry, either natural or made so by thorough drainage, as they will not live or thrive on a soil constantly saturated with stagnant moisture. It should also be well prepared by twiceplowing, at least, beforehand, using the subsoil plow after the common one at the second plowing. On new fresh lands manuring will be unnecessary, but on lands exhausted by cropping, fertilizers must be applied, either by turning in heavy crops of clover or well decomposed manure or compost. To insure a good growth of fruit trees, land should be in as good condition as for a crop of wheat, corn, or potatoes. If you want trees to grow well, be vigorous and strong, you must give them plenty of food and good cultiva tion until August lst, when all cultivation should cease, to allow new wood to thoroughly ripen up before cold weather, which it will not do if kept growing by cultivation after that date. In regard to this important operation, there are more fatal errors committed than in any other. As a general thing, trees are planted in the ground precisely as they are sent from the nursery. In removing a tree, Figs. 1 and 3 show trees as they come from the nursery. Figs. 2 and 4 show the same trees propno matter how carefully it may be done, a portion of the roots are broken and destroyed, and consequently the bal ance that existed in the structure of the tree is deranged. This must be restored by a proper pruning, adapted to the size, form, and condition of the tree, as follows: Standard Orchard Trees. - These, as sent from the nursery, vary from five to seven feet in height, with naked stems or trunks, and a number of branches at the top forming a head. These branches should all be cut back to within three or four buds of their base. This lessens the demand upon the roots, and enables the remaining buds to push with vigor. Cut Off smoothly all bruised or broken roots up to the sound wood. In case of older trees, of extra size, the pruning must be in proportion; as a general thing it will be safe to shorten all the previous year's shoots to three or four buds at their base, and where the branches are very numerous some may be cut out entirely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Plants, Shrubs and Trees That Grow, 1931 As I look back over the fifty-five years that I have been in the nursery business, I have seen great changes take place. Not many years ago the great emphasis was on fruit trees and bushes, but now ornamental planting is all the vogue. Never before has there been such a widespread and increasing inter est among home owners in improving and beautifying their home surroundings with lovely growing things of all kinds. People by the thousands are turning to gardening as they realize how much enjoyment there is in having really attractive surround ings and in making their home grounds more livable. Woodlawn nurseries have always kept pace with these modern trends by growing the most suitable kinds, those that are the easiest to start and give the utmost satisfaction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Fruit Trees and Plants, 1902, Vol. 1 Aking into consideration its hardiness, productiveness and general commercial value, the Apple T stands at the head of our list of fruits. In selecting the most important varieties for cultiva tion, it has been our constant aim to secure only those of standard excellence, and in no instance to recommend a novelty without ascertaining its history from a reliable source. Although a few of the kinds herein enumerated are almost universally popular everywhere, others are not satisfactory except in certain favored localities. Notwithstanding our main crop of trees consists principally of the follow ing kinds, yet we can also supply several other varieties of local reputation. For the convenience of planters we have divided the list of varieties into sections, according to their ripening season. This is intended for the latitude of the middle states, consequently those residing further north or south should make due allowance for their respective locations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Growing for Amateurs The cultivation of fruit trees, if practised with care and dis crimination, proves of absorbing interest, and is profitable. If, however, the work is commenced by the inexperienced without due inquiry, and in ignorance of essential details of cultivation, failure, comparative if not absolute, is inevitable. Providing the amateur plants a representative selection of fruits, and disposes them in the positions best suited to their needs, he will not have long to wait for some return on his outlay. He should plant not only Apple, Pear, Plum, Peach, and Cherry - none of which gives a fair cr0p until several years have passed - but Strawberry, Raspberry, Gooseberry, and Currant. If Strawberries are planted in late summer a. Cr0p of excellent fruits may be obtained the following year, and the bush fruits quickly come into bearing. By widening the scope of his fruit garden the amateur adds not only to its interest, but secures a profitable return in as short a time as possible. If walls are available it should be the object of the gardener to cover them without delay, for wall area is valuable. The simplest way to do this is to plant trained standards between the fan-trained trees or espaliers; in the course of years the latter will spread and occupy the whole wall area, but, meanwhile, much fruit can be obtained from the trained standard trees planted to fill the upper part of the wall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Shrubs, Vines and Plants, Cultivated and for Sale T IS once more our pleasure to present to our friends and patrons a new edition of our descriptive catalogue OF fruit and ornamental trees, etc, and in doing so we tender to them our sincere thanks for the many expressions of encouragement and substantial aid they have given us. We will endeavor in the future, as we have in the past, by strict personal attention to business, to merit their patronage and good will. The lamented Downing said, in the introduction to his work on fruit and fruit-trees, that A man born on the banks of one of the noblest and most fruitful rivers in America, and whose best days have been spent in gardens and orchards, may perhaps be pardoned for talking about fruit-trees. We must claim indulgence, for similar reasons. Forty of the best years of our life have been devoted to the nursery and fruit - growing business and if we seem to urge these subjects beyond the rules of propriety, our apology is, that we think we are working in a good cause and for the good of our fellow-men. He says further In deed, the subject deserves not a few, but many words. Fine fruit is the flower of commodi ties. It is the most perfect union of the useful and the beautiful that the earth knows. Trees full of soft foliage blossoms fresh with spring beauty and finally fruit, rich, bloom-dusted, melting and luscious. Such are the treasures of the orchard and the garden temptingly offered to every landholder in this bright and sunny though temperate climate. We are pleased to note an increasing interest throughout the Whole country in the cultivation of the useful and beautiful. Both fruits and flowers are more highly appreciated by the masses than formerly, and we regard it as a most happy indication, not only in the effect it will have upon the health of the body, but also in the softening influence it will have on the harsher feelings of our nature.
