The war's effect on his friends and his community is felt on every page. All the pain and joy came back to the author as he relived every detail that he wrote about. The book is a non-military tale of the toll that war takes on a person and on an entire community. But mostly, it is a book about the deep bond and love that existed between the friends who grew up together during those times and their families who share that love for each other with them.
