Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crusades and the Crusaders The piety and chivalry exhibited by those Christian warriors, who, at an early period of European civilization, left their homes and their countries to rescue the Holy Sepulchre from the grasp of Moslem conquerors, have since seldom - save in the case of men too sceptical to sym pathize, or too stupid to comprehend - failed to excite admiration and curiosity. My object, in this book for boys, is to give an idea of the heroes who, animated by religion and heroism, took part in the battles, the sieges, the marvellous enterprises of valor and despair, which make up the history of those great adventures known as the Crusades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crusaders, or Scenes, Events, and Characters, From the Times of the Crusades HE seventh century of the Christian era was witness of a great and sudden change in the moral and poli tical condition of the East. It is marked by the appear. Ance of Mohammed the Prophet of God, as he is styled by those who profess his religion. It is not our intention to become the panegyrists of the Prophet, but truth compels us to acknowledge that he possessed many great and noble qualities; and we might in charity believe, that, born as he was in the midst of idolatry, with the whole world lying in dark ness around him, the light-religion? Of Persia (by far the purest system Of unrevealed religion) sunk and de graded, the Mosaic law become a burdensome and pue rile superstition, and even Christianity itself nearly lost beneath the weight of false philosophy and abject ido latty - he may have been sincere in the first enunciation of the sublime sentence on which his religious system rests, There is no God but God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the First Crusade, as witnessed by contemporary writers 'O day so ardently desired! O time of times the most memorable! O deed before all other deeds!' The fall of Jerusalem in the summer of 1099 to an exhausted and starving army of western European soldiers was one of the most extraordinary events of the Middle Ages. It was both the climax of a great wave of visionary Christian fervour and the beginning of what proved to be a futile and abortive attempt to implant a new European kingdom of heaven in an overwhelmingly Muslim world. This remarkable collection brings together a wide variety of contemporary accounts of the First Crusade, including Pope Urban II's initial call to arms of 1095, as well as the first-hand writings of priests, knights, a Jewish pilgrim, a destitute noblewoman, an Iraqi poet and the historian Anna Comnena. Together they provide a vivid and nuanced picture of the First Crusade and the people who were swept up in it. Edited with an introduction and notes by Christopher Tyerman

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Crusades, Vol. 1 of 3 And we unhesitatingly claim a place among these for that which we are about to lay before the public. It were super uous to speak of the advantages derived from the science to which it belongs; and there can be no doubt that the Crusades form one of the most important sections of human history; not only instructive, but extraordinary; supplying abundance of edifying matter to the statesman, the philosopher, the poet, the novelist, and the citizen. If it be true that no page of history should be considered as a blank to the statesman, which leaf of her vast volume can he turn with much more promise of instruction? He will behold men, of powerful and ambitious minds, seizing upon the worst passions of various ages, - superstition, cupidity, and cruelty, - and wielding the energies of incredible multi tudes, in endeavours to work out their own ends and views. Many an invaluable lesson may he gather from the want of foresight, prudence, knowledge, and unanimity dis played in these astonishing enterprises whilst the causes of numerous effects now in Operation may be plainly traced to these eventful periods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Crusades Although the title sufficiently indicates the Scope of this work, it may not be superfluous to add that it is designed to give to busy people a narrative Of the grand drama of the Crusades. The strictly historical portions rest of course on contemporary authority, but in the treatment and application of the first writers, I have drawn largely on the thought Of a noble array of scholars, widely differing in views, a list of whose works is given before the Index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Crusade: The Accounts of Eyewitnesses and Participants When Henry Adams sought to triangulate the progress of modern civilization he fixed his historical transit at Mont St. Michel and Chartres in the days of the First Crusade and sighted from them across the centuries. No earlier place in the Middle Ages would have afforded a foundation of equal breadth in its description of society. The spiritual character of the Crusade lent a halo to even the most commonplace details connected with it and thus gave to them a literary immortality hitherto confined rather narrowly to matters of ecclesiastical interest. The widespread enthusiasm for the movement and participation in it assured its commemoration not only in monuments of stone but in a variety of writings as well. The authors of these accounts were neither sophisticated nor highly trained in their art. The picture of society which they drew, though relatively complete, has stood forth with all the simple and stark realism of a charcoal sketch, full of feeling, action, and scenery, but lacking in finish. The polish and finish have come with the later centuries. For those, however, who would understand that society even in its more finished form, a knowledge of the preliminary sketch is still essential. In these lack-o-Latin days students seeking to accomplish this find their path too much beset with linguistic obstacles. It is to ameliorate these difficulties that the present volume has been compiled. The plan of this work will be found reminiscent of Archers Crusade of Richard I and the Parallel Source Problems of Mediaeval History, The author gratefully acknowledges indebtedness to both. It is a picture of manners rather than a narrative of events. The object proposed has been to set before the view of the reader, as clearly as the existing documents permit, the Crusa ders, the Greeks, the Turks, and the Saracens, of the twelfth century, as they lived, thought, and acted. Hence there will be found much more of anecdote in the following pages than is per haps consistent with legitimate historic narrative. Discussion has been avoided as being unsuitable to a work of this kind, and reflections are intro duced only where they seem to be required, and vpresented themselves naturally. The narration, 5 though not laying claim to the rank of history, is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They considered how great the expense had been and said to one another that they could not go to Babylon or Alexandria or Syria; for they had neither provisions nor money for the journey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crusaders, Vol. 2 of 2: Or, Scenes, Events, and Characters, From the Times of the Crusades The flattering reception which the first volume of the crusaders, ' destitute of novelty as the subject might appear to be, has met with, causes the appear ance of the present volume, which like the former embraces the space of about half a century. In this the narrative is carried down to the taking of J eru salem by sultan Saladin, and terminates with the crusade headed by Philip Augustus and Richard Caeur de Lion.
