Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Port Kingston The pages of this book are divided into four definite sections. Those sections deal with history, com merce, religion, and the social relations. Our Cruise had Kingston for its ultimate point. Jamaica, therefore, is the chief concern of my narrative. There have been many books about the West Indies. Taken together they represent a library of considerable size. Jamaica figures largely in all. Some of the books I have read with care, at most I have at all events glanced, and all, or nearly so, I have found worthy of attention, every writer garnering some sheaves worthy of a place in the storehouse of our accumulated information. I have not, however, chanced upon one in the whole group, telling the plain tale of life as it is, as it was presented to my own wondering eyes, as it was presented to me through the eyes of those who have made in the West Indies a life-long residence, and whose knowledge is as deep and profound as is their affection for the home of their birth or adoption. In some of the books which I critically examined, with a view of discovering if I had anything to say that had not been said a thousand times already, I remarked with some measure of astonishment how one book had been written out of others, how an accidental error in one is put forward as an historic fact to the generation next succeeding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Frolic: A Sea Story The "Cruise of the 'Frolic'" has already met with so many marks of favor, that it is hoped it will be welcomed not the less warmly in its new and more attractive form. The yachting world especially received the narrative of my adventures in good part; two or three, however, among whom was the O'Wiggins, insisted that I had caricatured them, and talked of demanding satisfaction at the point of the sword, or the muzzle of a pistol. I assured them then, as I do now, that on the word of an officer and a gentleman, I had not the slightest intention of wounding the feelings of any human being; and I entreated their pardon, if in shooting at a venture I had hit an object at which I had not taken aim. Book excerpt: Calypso, Voodoo, Sunshine, Communism, Reggae, Colonialism, The Slave Trade, Rum, Revolution, Industry and Tourism - 100 years of the Caribbean image and identity is captured in this deluxe new hardback photography book. The image of the Caribbean is as much a creation of the outsider as it is the complex identity of its people - a melting pot of races created out of the participants in the 400 year slave trade - enforced Africans, indigenous Americans and their colonisers - French, Spanish, German, Dutch, English. The identity of the Caribbean stands at this intersection of tourism, the detritus of the slave trade, colonialism and tropicality. The regions politics span a hot bed of ideas and radicalism - from Castro's Cuba, communist thorn in the side of North America, to the violent right-wing dictatorship of Haiti's Papa Doc in the 1960s; from Manley's Jamaica in the 1970s to Eric Williams' Trinidad in the 1960s. This book is a deluxe large format hardback book featuring 100s of fascinating and unique photographs that span one hundred years of Caribbean history, culture, industry and more as well as the subsequent diaspora of its people to America, England and elsewhere. The photographs show the many ways in which the region is portrayed - from luscious and tropical backdrop of tourism and hedonism, to colonial outpost and revolutionary threat within North America's own backyard.

Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Hailed as the top nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography and the Indies Choice Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year award “Extraordinarily moving . . . a powerfully drawn survival epic.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] one-in-a-billion story . . . designed to wrench from self-respecting critics all the blurby adjectives we normally try to avoid: It is amazing, unforgettable, gripping, harrowing, chilling, and inspiring.”—New York “Staggering . . . mesmerizing . . . Hillenbrand’s writing is so ferociously cinematic, the events she describes so incredible, you don’t dare take your eyes off the page.”—People “A meticulous, soaring and beautifully written account of an extraordinary life.”—The Washington Post “Ambitious and powerful . . . a startling narrative and an inspirational book.”—The New York Times Book Review “Magnificent . . . incredible . . . [Hillenbrand] has crafted another masterful blend of sports, history and overcoming terrific odds; this is biography taken to the nth degree, a chronicle of a remarkable life lived through extraordinary times.”—The Dallas Morning News “An astonishing testament to the superhuman power of tenacity.”—Entertainment Weekly “A tale of triumph and redemption . . . astonishingly detailed.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “[A] masterfully told true story . . . nothing less than a marvel.”—Washingtonian “[Hillenbrand tells this] story with cool elegance but at a thrilling sprinter’s pace.”—Time “Hillenbrand [is] one of our best writers of narrative history. You don’t have to be a sports fan or a war-history buff to devour this book—you just have to love great storytelling.”—Rebecca Skloot, author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
