Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clan-Na-Gael and the Murder of Dr. Cronin: Being a Complete and Authentic Narrative of the Rise and Development of the Irish Revolutionary Movement, and an Impartial Account of the Crime in the Carlson Cottage; From Original Information No man can understand the condition of Irish feeling, or the status of Irish parties, who does not get his finger upon the pulse of the revolutionary movement. For that reason it has been felt that no history of the Cronin case could be complete - could be even intelligible, on account of the charges which have been. Made - which did not show the origin of Irish bitterness against the English Government, and the birth and growth of the revolt against alien tyranny. Of making books there is no end. Already there are on the market several different publications, and each eagerly claiming public attention on the ground that it is the story of the crime. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE This volume is not intended as an addition to the criminal literature of the country. It has not been published solely for the pleasure of those who delight in devouring morbid tales of crime and criminals. It rather owes its existence to a general demand from all parts of the United States, from the Canadas, from Great Britain, and from many points on the continent of Europe, for a complete, concise, and accurate story of one of the greatest of modern crimes and the events connected therewith. The reports of the public press, while of the most searching and elaborate character, have nevertheless been of necessity so disjointed, fragmentary and confusing, covering a period of over seven months, each day and week replete with new discoveries and new sensations, as to make it well-nigh impossible for even the most careful reader, with unlimited time at his disposal, to grasp or comprehend anything more than the barest outline of this remarkable case. The object of this volume therefore, is to present in consecutive form and as a complete narrative all the facts which have been brought to light from the day of the disappearance of Dr. Cronin, to the close of the trial of those accused of his murder. Many circumstances have combined to make the task a difficult and laborious one, but the results are submitted in the belief that as the only effort of its kind, it will prove not only a story of thrilling interest to the general reader, but also valuable, by its accuracy and continuity, as an historical work.
Book Synopsis Blood Runs Green by : Gillian O'Brien
Download or read book Blood Runs Green written by Gillian O'Brien and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the biggest funeral Chicago had seen since Lincoln’s. On May 26, 1889, four thousand mourners proceeded down Michigan Avenue, followed by a crowd forty thousand strong, in a howl of protest at what commentators called one of the ghastliest and most curious crimes in civilized history. The dead man, Dr. P. H. Cronin, was a respected Irish physician, but his brutal murder uncovered a web of intrigue, secrecy, and corruption that stretched across the United States and far beyond. Blood Runs Green tells the story of Cronin’s murder from the police investigation to the trial. It is a story of hotheaded journalists in pursuit of sensational crimes, of a bungling police force riddled with informers and spies, and of a secret revolutionary society determined to free Ireland but succeeding only in tearing itself apart. It is also the story of a booming immigrant population clamoring for power at a time of unprecedented change. From backrooms to courtrooms, historian Gillian O’Brien deftly navigates the complexities of Irish Chicago, bringing to life a rich cast of characters and tracing the spectacular rise and fall of the secret Irish American society Clan na Gael. She draws on real-life accounts and sources from the United States, Ireland, and Britain to cast new light on Clan na Gael and reveal how Irish republicanism swept across the United States. Destined to be a true crime classic, Blood Runs Green is an enthralling tale of a murder that captivated the world and reverberated through society long after the coffin closed.

Book excerpt: Paul Mathry, a student about to graduate and embark upon a teaching career, finds out that his father was convicted for murder, a secret that his mother had hidden from him since his childhood. Driven by an intense desire to see his father, Paul sets out to visit him in prison, only to find out that visitors are never allowed there. From there, he meets the primary witnesses in the case that convicted his father, not all of whom are supportive to Paul's cause. He encounters several dead ends but he persists, with the help of a store girl named Lena and a news reporter. His persistent campaign finally bears fruit. Rees Mathry, Paul's father, goes on appeal and is vindicated. The novel ends with Paul's father, a hardened, cynical man, seeing a fleeting hope for self-renewal and a purposeful life. In the magnificent narrative tradition of The Citadel, The Stars Look Down and Cronin’s other classic novels, Beyond This Place is a great book by a much-loved author.

He is a heavy, burly man, with keen eyes and a rather austere expression, but he had not been speaking half an hour when he had the audience entirely with him. His voice was exquisitely modulated, and his matter was so excellently chosen, and so carefully worded, that his speech in every detail was a model, and, as an hostile critic in the newspaper benches put it, sufficient in itself to put him at the very front of the criminal bar in the West. He entered into the case chiefly as it touched his client Dan Coughlin, and began his address with a frank statement of the charge against that prisoner. "It is," he said, " that he made an agreement with the men who sit beside him, and with others, to the grand jury unknown, to kill Dr. Cronin. That is the charge in the case. To that charge has been addressed all the testimony that has been admitted here. To the establishment and refutation of that plain question there has been, what counsel who preceded me stated, a mountain of circumstances piled up before you. More than three-quarters of a hundred of Irishmen have come and contributed circumstances to that mass. Over half a hundred of our German citizens have made their contribution; more than a quarter of a hundred of American-born people have made their contribution to that mass of circumstances....
