Book excerpt: Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder "Edwards's second winter-themed anthology in the British Library Crime Classics series is a standout. As in the most successful of such volumes, the editor's expertise results in a selection of unusual suspects, expanding readers' knowledge." —Publishers Weekly STARRED review Crimson Snow brings together a dozen vintage crime stories set in winter. Welcome to a world of Father Christmases behaving oddly, a famous fictional detective in a Yuletide drama, mysterious tracks in the snow, and some very unpleasant carol singers. There's no denying that the supposed season of goodwill is a time of year that lends itself to detective fiction. On a cold night, it's tempting to curl up by the fireside with a good mystery. And more than that, claustrophobic house parties, with people cooped up with long-estranged relatives, can provide plenty of motives for murder. Including forgotten stories by major writers such as Margery Allingham, as well as classic tales by less familiar crime novelists, each story in this selection is introduced by the leading expert on classic crime, Martin Edwards. The resulting volume is an entertaining and atmospheric compendium of wintry delights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Tender is the Night', Francis Scott Fitzgerald delves into the glamorous and turbulent world of the American expatriates in the 1920s. The novel follows the lives of Dick and Nicole Diver, exploring the complexities of marriage, mental health, and the destructive impact of wealth and status. Fitzgerald's beautiful prose captures the essence of the Jazz Age while simultaneously providing a poignant commentary on human nature and the effects of societal expectations. The novel's structure, with its non-linear narrative and intricate character development, showcases Fitzgerald's literary prowess and ability to create a vivid and immersive story. 'Tender is the Night' stands as a classic example of American literature, showcasing the author's keen insight into the human condition and skillful storytelling. Francis Scott Fitzgerald himself led a troubled life marked by personal struggles and the pursuit of societal success. His own experiences with wealth and excess likely informed the themes present in 'Tender is the Night', making the novel a deeply personal and introspective work. Fitzgerald's reputation as a literary giant of the 20th century further solidifies the importance of 'Tender is the Night' in the realm of American literature. I recommend 'Tender is the Night' to readers looking for a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant novel that explores the complexities of human relationships and societal expectations. Fitzgerald's masterful storytelling and profound insights make this novel a must-read for anyone interested in classic literature.

Book Synopsis The Patient Particulars by : Christopher J. Knight
Download or read book The Patient Particulars written by Christopher J. Knight and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Patient Particulars: American Modernism and the Technique of Originality is a literary history that focuses on four canonical texts - Stein's Tender Buttons (1914), Hemingway's In Our Time (1925), Williams's Spring and All (1923), and Moore's Observations (1924) - grouped together for the purpose of raising a question about the manner in which American literary modernism is traditionally described. Author Christopher J. Knight is interested in the way that the classical "covenant between word and world," now considered fractured, experienced undue pressure from the modernists' earlier project to bridge the gap. With respect to the texts named, Knight argues that there is an evinced desire to think of the work as a vertical, veridical act of discovery. There is, as such, an ambition to collapse representation into presentation and even revelation; an ambition that, while quixotic, is not without formal ("the technique of originality") and political consequences. These consequences are, in fact, the main focus of the book, and in turn, are brought forward to ask further questions about how we periodize American literary modernism(s)."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
