Book excerpt: “The devil’s neatest trick is to persuade us that he doesn’t exist.” It is a maxim that both rings true in our contemporary world and pervades this tragicomic novel of anxiety and evil set amid the horrors of World War II. As a gay man living in a totalitarian, patriarchal society, noted Czech writer Ladislav Fuks identified with the tragic fate of his Jewish countrymen during the Holocaust. The Cremator arises from that shared experience. Fuks presents a grotesque, dystopian world in which a dutiful father, following the strict logic of his time, liberates the souls of his loved ones by destroying their bodies—first the dead, then the living. As we watch this very human character—a character who never ceases to believe that he is doing good—become possessed by an inhuman ideology, the evil that initially permeates the novel’s atmosphere concretizes in this familiar family man. A study of the totalitarian mindset with stunning resonance for today, The Cremator is a disturbing, powerful work of literary horror.

It is a brief look into the trials and tribulations as they strived to reestablish themselves in their new world. Kris VanStecklensburg was highly disappointment in finding work in New York. He was forced after a year in relocating with wife, Helga, to Detroit, Michigan, where their dreams and aspirations ultimately came to fruition. It was not until (Hans) their son’s arrival that their dream was complete. Hans, as he grew up, always felt different. He did not act like most boys his age. Upon reaching high school, his whole character changed. The feelings he struggled with growing up finally emerged. His life changed drastically as he began to follow his emotions and not his heart. After meeting Isaac, he felt his life whole. But soon after, their relationship hit a snag and started to decline. It was not long that Isaac changed and treated him as just another sex toy. One day, Isaac up and left without explanation. A sad day for Hans but, at the same time, gave him reason to live. His ambition going forward was find Isaac and end his evil ways with what he referred to as sweet revenge. Hans eventually enrolled in a local college and earned his postsecondary certificate and bachelor’s degree in the mortuary science. After graduating began working in a local funeral home on the south side, which housed a modern crematory. Here, he felt he could carry out his dream of good versus evil, his own interpretation of sweet revenge on his nemesis, Isaac. The lab was the perfect setup for disposing of his archenemy without a trace. But how was he going to trick or entice Isaac once he located him back to the south side and his domain in the lab? After years of planning the elimination of Isaac, he and a new partner by the name of Winslow had a plan. But at the last moment, all the planning and preparation things could not have been more macabre or chilling as the story takes on a life of its own—not at all what Hans envisioned, quite the opposite.

Book excerpt: "Bringing together prominent early contributions from this emergent perspective, the volume traces the origins, theory and methodology of a nascent ghost criminology. From the powers of exorcism and erasure marshaled by state agents, street-level struggles over memorialization and memory, to the lingering violence of crime scenes and the ghostly traces of outlaw artists, Ghost Criminology is a book attuned to that which is well-theorized in other disciplines-the spectral, hauntological, apparitional. Each of the writers assembled here shares, as Mark Fisher (2017) put it, a fascination for the outside, "that which lies beyond standard perception, cognition and experience." As such, this collection uses cutting-edge social and cultural theory to tangle with some of criminology's most stubborn revenants-the politics of criminalization, the commodification of crime and violence, the haunting power of the image, as well as the unheard and disregarded cries of the dead"--

Burreson and Hoeltke argue that natural burial offers a more accurate picture of Christian hope and resurrection. This immensely practical guide is also an application of the hope of the resurrection to those grieving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on migrant and minority cemetery needs through the conceptual lens of the mobilities of the living and the dead. In doing so, the book brings migration and mobility studies into much-needed dialogue with death studies to explore the symbolically and politically important issue of culturally inclusive spaces of cemeteries and crematoria for migrants and established minorities. The book addresses majority and minority cemetery and crematoria provisions and practices in a range of North West European contexts. It describes how the planning, management and use of cemeteries and crematoria in multicultural societies can tell us about the everyday lived experiences of migration and migrant heritage, urban diversity, social inclusion and exclusion in Europe, and how these relate to migrant and minority experience of lived citizenship, practices of territoriality and bordering, colonial/postcolonial narratives. The book will be of interest to readers in the fields of migration/mobilities studies and death studies, as well as policy makers and practitioners, such as local government officers, cemetery managers and city planners.
