Together again for the first time, here come the greatest comic book superheroes ever assembled between two covers: down from the heavens—Superman and the Mighty Thor—or swinging over rooftops—the Batman and Spider-Man; star-spangled, like Captain America and Wonder Woman, or clad in darkness, like the Shadow and Spawn; facing down super-villains on their own, like the Flash and the Punisher or gathered together in a team of champions, like the Avengers and the X-Men! Based on the three-part PBS documentary series Superheroes, this companion volume chronicles the never-ending battle of the comic book industry, its greatest creators, and its greatest creations. Covering the effect of superheroes on American culture—in print, on film and television, and in digital media—and the effect of American culture on its superheroes, Superheroes: Capes, Cowls, and the Creation of Comic Book Culture appeals to readers of all ages, from the casual observer of the phenomenon to the most exacting fan of the genre. Drawing from more than 50 new interviews conducted expressly for Superheroes!—creators from Stan Lee to Grant Morrison, commentators from Michael Chabon to Jules Feiffer, actors from Adam West to Lynda Carter, and filmmakers such as Zach Snyder—this is an up-to-the-minute narrative history of the superhero, from the comic strip adventurers of the Great Depression, up to the blockbuster CGI movie superstars of the 21st Century. Featuring more than 500 full-color comic book panels, covers, sketches, photographs of both essential and rare artwork, Superheroes is the definitive story of this powerful presence in pop culture.

Book excerpt: I first started writing this book two years ago from a vision given to me by God. I am a Baptist preacher now and was a former A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal), Spiritualist, and Holiness preacher. I have also studied Catholicism, Seven day Adventist, Moslem, Buddhist, and Jehovah Witness religions for experience in the gospel. I consider myself to be a Christian, who believes totally in the Holy Bible by King James Version, and I believe all others are just translations from the King James. I have been baptized in the Holiness church in Jacksonville, North Carolina in the early 80s. Although I was baptized in the early 80s, I started my ministry in 1981, while attending Walker Chapel A. M. E. church in California, under the leadership of Rev. Carlyle. I was in the United States Marine Corps, in which, I traveled the world twice and enjoying every moment of it. I always went to church; because that is the way I was raised. I was taught at an early age how to pray to Jesus Christ for whatever I needed. My father was a Spiritualist pastor for as long as I knew of him, and that is where my Spiritualist background derived. I learned the spiritual aspect of the Lord and how to live according to the spirits that exist all around us, but cannot always be seen. While my tenor in the Marines, I had became an alcoholic and was headed down a path in life that brought me to a halt, and caused me to make the best decision in my life. I was celebrating my twenty-second birthday when I got intoxicated by drinking a gallon of Brandy when stationed in Okinawa, Japan. I was at the pool celebrating, when I fell in the water and not knowing how to swim, I began to sink. If it had not been for the other guys (Leroy Young, Henry Gates, Calvin Holder, and King) there with me I would not have been here now. I want to thank those guys again for saving my life, by pulling me out the pool and caring me to my barracks and putting me to bed. I didnt know when they pulled me out the pool, or put me to bed, but Im glad that they did. I had to report to the mess hall at fi ve oclock that morning, and it was already three oclock and I had a hang over already. I remember praying to God with a promise, that if he would deliver me from drinking, I would serve him for the rest of my life. Well! I must have dropped off to sleep, but when I woke up my hang over was gone, and I havent taken a drink of liquor since and I didnt have to go to AA either. I dont advice this for anyone else unless they believe that Jesus Christ will deliver them from that habit without aide. I was falsely accused in the Marine Corps by some staff ncos who didnt want me to make them look bad, by their lack of leadership, so they lied about me saying things I didnt say and caused me to not receive my promotion, and stop my advancement in the Marines. I was injured in the Marines and got out in 1990. God put this title of the book in my mind to write for others so that there belief may gain strength through the truth in the gospel. Believe it or not, it has been a long time working on this book, which started about fi ve years ago. I believe this book will be a blessing to whomever read it, and will give a better understanding of who actually created this world and all who live in it. May God Bless the reader

Book excerpt: Investigates how the Christian fundamentalist movement brings Creationism into the mainstream through a Kentucky museum In Creating the Creation Museum, Kathleen C. Oberlin shows us how the largest Creationist organization, Answers in Genesis (AiG), built a museum—which has had over three million visitors—to make its movement mainstream. She takes us behind the scenes, vividly bringing the museum to life by detailing its infamous exhibits on human fossils, dinosaur remains, and more. Drawing on over three years of research at the Creation Museum, where she was granted rare access to AiG’s leadership, Oberlin examines how the museum convincingly reframes scientific facts, such as modeling itself on traditional natural history museums. Through a unique historical dataset of over 1,000 internal documents from creationist organizations and an analysis of media coverage, Creating the Creation Museum shows how the museum works as a site of social movement activity and a place to contest the secular mainstream. Oberlin ultimately argues that the Creation Museum has real-world consequences in today’s polarized era.

Book excerpt: In 1996, a discovery was made of a body of knowledge which is believed to have important implications for the future of man. In that year, it was discovered that many cultural artifacts produced by man since about 30,000 BC possess an unusual symbolism. In The Creation: Its Infinite Features and Finite Realms, artifacts of man that possess this unusual symbolism are referred to as inspired sources. Volume IV of The Creation series addresses inspired sources that pertain to the destiny of man to carry the gospel of Jesus Christ and expand the kingdom of God to other stellar systems in the Milky Way Galaxy and, ultimately, to distant parts of the universe in the future age. This study also briefly addresses the means, that is, spaceship propulsion, wormhole travel, and black hole travel, by which man and other living entities who serve the Creator in the present age will travel to stellar and galactic destinations in the future age.

Book excerpt: "The Creation is a timely book about the survival of life on this planet, which E. O. Wilson demonstrates is more endangered than ever before. Drawing on his own personal experiences as a world-leading biologist, he prophesies that at least half the species of plants and animals on Earth could either be gone or fated for early extinction by the end of our present century. Written in the form of an impassioned letter to a Southern Baptist pastor, The Creation demonstrates that science and religion need not be warring antagonists."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Paul Thomas chronicles a multi-level reception study of the Bible at both the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter in Kentucky, USA. Thomas explores the commercial presentation of biblical narratives and the reception of those narratives by the patrons of each attraction, focusing upon three topics; what do young Creationists believe, how they interpret their beliefs from the Bible, and what is the user experience at the museums? The volume begins by explaining how Answers in Genesis (AiG) use Bible passages to support young-Earth creationist arguments, allowing for the chance to consider the Bible via physical means. Thomas then examines how the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter visitors receive the Bible (as presented by AiG) and how this presentation informs visitors' understanding of the text, exploring concepts such as the most prominent displays of the two attractions, the larger context of museums and theme parks and the case studies of the Methuselah display and The Noah Interview. He concludes with the summary of the user experience generated by the attractions, analyzing the degree to which patrons accept, negotiate, or resist the interpretation of the Bible offered by AiG.
