Book excerpt: I'd never met a man; other than my father, that molded my life, at such a young age. The stories that Bill told us kids; are still vivid in my memories. They were stories of honest men, doing an honest days work. God help the person who interfered or tried to steal their livelihood. For they were men of law and respect. Sure, our parents told us that the stories 'Cowboy Bill' told us were lies, but we didn't care. He took one summer of our lives and showed us what it was like to be a cowboy; to live in the old frontier. He told us things I'll never forget. And I'll never forget him or that summer. Each time I look at the stars at night, I'm reminded of him.

Book excerpt: Despite being neighbouring provinces with long ranching histories, British Columbia and Alberta saw their ranching techniques develop quite differently. As most ranching styles were based on one of the two dominant styles in use south of the border, BC ranchers tended to adopt the California style whereas Alberta took its lead from Texas. But the different practices actually go back much further. Cattle cultures in southwestern Spain, sub-Saharan Africa and the British highlands all shaped the basis of North American ranching. Digging deep into the origins of cowboy culture, Ken Mather tells the stories of men and women on the ranching frontiers of British Columbia and Alberta and reveals little-known details that help us understand the beginnings of ranching in these two provinces.

Book excerpt: Defining Mission, offers a glimpse into the daily life and leadership styles of the members of an Italian religious institute struggling to overcome the obstacles faced in America. Patricia Durchholz provides the historical context and diplomatic negotiations involved as a foreign missionary society works and expands in the North American dioceses in Canada, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Louisville, Newark and San Diego. She begins before World War II with the diary of Father Edward Mason, a seasoned African missionary, who sought to offer his services to African American parishes to secure a safe haven for Comboni missionaries facing expulsion from Africa. Durchholz continues the story as other Comboni missionaries struggle to adapt to America and pioneer work in ethnic parishes and missions through the 1960s. The author analyzes the successes and failures of this Italian institute serving African Americans, while detailing the political and religious aspects of the community.

Book excerpt: Cowboys are an American legend, but despite ubiquity in history and popular culture, misperceptions abound. Technically, a cowboy worked with cattle, as a ranch hand, while his boss, the cattleman, owned the ranch. Jacqueline M. Moore casts aside romantic and one-dimensional images of cowboys by analyzing the class, gender, and labor histories of ranching in Texas during the second half of the nineteenth century. As working-class men, cowboys showed their masculinity through their skills at work as well as public displays in town. But what cowboys thought was manly behavior did not always match those ideas of the business-minded cattlemen, who largely absorbed middle-class masculine ideals of restraint. Real men, by these standards, had self-mastery over their impulses and didn’t fight, drink, gamble or consort with "unsavory" women. Moore explores how, in contrast to the mythic image, from the late 1870s on, as the Texas frontier became more settled and the open range disappeared, the real cowboys faced increasing demands from the people around them to rein in the very traits that Americans considered the most masculine. Book excerpt: One of FX’s most successful original productions, Sons of Anarchy roared onto the screen in 2008 and dominated the cable network’s programming for seven seasons. Following an outlaw motorcycle club on its Shakespearean journey, the series took audiences on a wild ride powered by a high-octane brand of masculinity. This collection of new essays explores the show’s complicated presentation of masculinity and its cultural implications. Series creator and writer Kurt Sutter depicts male characters who act from a highly traditional sense of what it means to be a man. SOA both vaunts and challenges that sense of manhood as the characters face the consequences of their ride-or-die lifestyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowboy and drifter Frank Clifford lived a lot of lives—and raised a lot of hell—in the first quarter of his life. The number of times he changed his name—Clifford being just one of them—suggests that he often traveled just steps ahead of the law. During the 1870s and 1880s his restless spirit led him all over the Southwest, crossing the paths of many of the era’s most notorious characters, most notably Clay Allison and Billy the Kid. More than just an entertaining and informative narrative of his Wild West adventures, Clifford’s memoir also paints a picture of how ranchers and ordinary folk lived, worked, and stayed alive during those tumultuous years. Written in 1940 and edited and annotated by Frederick Nolan, Deep Trails in the Old West is likely one of the last eyewitness histories of the old West ever to be discovered. As Frank Clifford, the author rode with outlaw Clay Allison’s Colfax County vigilantes, traveled with Charlie Siringo, cowboyed on the Bell Ranch, contended with Apaches, and mined for gold in Hillsboro. In 1880 he was one of the Panhandle cowboys sent into New Mexico to recover cattle stolen by Billy the Kid and his compañeros—and in the process he got to know the Kid dangerously well. In unveiling this work, Nolan faithfully preserves Clifford’s own words, providing helpful annotation without censoring either the author’s strong opinions or his racial biases. For all its roughness, Deep Trails in the Old West is a rich resource of frontier lore, customs, and manners, told by a man who saw the Old West at its wildest—and lived to tell the tale.

Book excerpt: Suggesting that better understanding of conflicts between Anglo and Latin America can come from the study of their contrasting popular fictions, the author compares the traditional attachment in Latin America to government by a strong man--a caudillo--to the diametrically opposed expansionist frontier ideology of the United States--the cowboy--who makes space safe for Anglo colonization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain once wrote, "We are nothing but echoes." Despite this pronouncement, Twain's voice continues to reverberate in the 21st century. Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn helped define modern American literature, creating The Huck Finn Tradition in contemporary writing. This volume discusses the intertextual connections between Twain's iconic novel and eight works by celebrated American author Cormac McCarthy, including Suttree, The Orchard Keeper, Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing, Cities of the Plain, No Country for Old Men, and The Road. By chronicling the diverse scholarly comparisons between Twain and McCarthy and exploring the echoes of Twain and Huck Finn in McCarthy's writing, this study reveals how McCarthy has not only absorbed Twain's tradition, but transformed it, with consequences that surpass the work of other Twain heirs.
