Book excerpt: When exiled royalty and espionage combine, expect a romance as bold as the 1920s . . . Olga Novikov is a princess without a throne. Her fiancé and her family slain in the revolution, she flees Russia and finds herself working as the head of housekeeping at London’s luxurious Grand Russe Hotel. It’s a far cry from the glamour of her former life, but she’s grateful for the job—until a guest forces her to question where her loyalty lies. The charming nobleman challenges her at every turn—and arouses dreams of romance she thought she’d abandoned forever . . . Douglas “Glass” Childers is living a double life. On the surface, he’s the indolent Viscount Walling, but in truth he’s an intelligence agent searching for a Bolshevik weapons master. The coolly beautiful and headstrong housekeeper is a distraction he doesn’t need—unless she’s the key piece in the puzzle he must solve. Trusting her could be dangerous—but loving her is an undeniable temptation . . . Praise for Heather Hiestand’s novels “One Taste of Scandal is a delicious, multi-layered Victorian treat." —Gina Robinson, author of The Last Honest Seamstress and the Agent Ex series “A fast read with a different view point than many novels in the genre.” —Library Journal on His Wicked Smile “This is definitely one for the keeper shelf.” —Historical Romance Lover on His Wicked Smile “A delightful, sexy glimpse into Victorian life and loving with two wonderfully non‑traditional lovers.” —Jessa Slade, author of Dark Prince's Desire, on His Wicked Smile “You’ve got to admire Hiestand’s moxie for setting her latest romance in an era rarely portrayed in today’s historical romances.” –RT Book Reviews on I Wanna Be Loved By You.

Book excerpt: Promoted to acting lieutenant at the bloody Battle of Camperdown in October 1797, Thomas Kydd must now sit an examination to confirm his rank—or face an inglorious return before the mast. But this is only the first of many obstacles for a man who was pressed into the King's service and discovered a calling for the sea. Kydd is from humble origins, yet he attains the lofty heights of the quarterdeck as an officer in His Majesty's Navy. If he is to avoid spending the rest of his career as a tarpaulin officer, he must also become a gentleman. Kydd and his enigmatic friend Nicholas Renzi set sail in HMS Tenacious for the North American station. Aboard the old 64-gun ship, Kydd comes to doubt he will ever match up to the high-born gentlemen officers.

Book Synopsis Richard Carvel — Complete by : Winston Churchill
Download or read book Richard Carvel — Complete written by Winston Churchill and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Carvel is a historical novel by the American novelist Winston Churchill, presented interestingly in the form of memoirs of an eighteenth-century stubborn and quick-tempered young man, Richard Carvel. He grew up with his grandfather, a wealthy man from Maryland and faithful to King George. But Richard's sympathies are with the people of the colonies who are unhappy about England's behavior towards them. It is set partly in Maryland and partly in London, England, during the American revolutionary era. First published in 1899 this eight-volume novel was a great hit immediately and sold around two million copies. Churchill used beautiful and easy-to-read language throughout. It's an entertaining novel filled with family feuds, romantic interests, abduction, pirates, the elevated lifestyle in London, and influential historical characters both British and American like the first president of the U.S.A, George Washington, and Whig politician Horace Walpole. The characters are lifelike; they have their fair share of flaws but show excellent character development till the end.

Download or read book Brave Faces written by Mary Arden and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evocative memoir about one woman’s journey from privilege to service, heartbreak to laughter. Mary Arden’s story gives an insight into the changes in society that took place with the advent of war. As the Second World War breaks out, Mary’s parents are determined that their daughter’s privileged upbringing should continue, and that life should carry on as much as normal. She is sent to finishing school and becomes a debutante attending ‘coming out’ balls in London, despite the nightly bombing raids. However, Mary is determined to do her bit for the war effort, and volunteers to serve as a Red Cross Nurse, before joining the WRNS. Accepted into the WRNS, not as an officer, but as ‘other rank’, Mary has to learn to live a very different kind of life to the one she was brought up to expect. She is used to being chaperoned, only talking to men she has been ‘introduced’ to, so it’s an almost impossible task for her Senior Wren Officer to find a suitable category for this naive girl. Mary finally becomes part of a new elite category known as Night Vision Testers, training the young pilots to see in the dark so they can land their planes on the deck of their aircraft carrier and not in the sea. As the war progresses, Mary moves from one Naval Air Station to another. Her tasks become stranger than fiction and her duties are definitely outside her job description – and most probably outside the rules too.
