Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Longbourn comes a story of survival and determination, of spies and artists, passion and danger—a portrait of Samuel Beckett’s wartime experiences in Paris. “Exquisitely crafted.” —O, The Oprah Magazine In 1939 Paris, the ground rumbles with the footfall of Nazi soldiers marching along the Champs-Élysées, and a young, unknown writer, recently arrived from Ireland to make his mark, smokes one last cigarette with his lover before the city they know is torn apart. Soon he will put them both in mortal danger by joining the Resistance. Through the years that follow, we are witness to the workings of a uniquely brilliant mind struggling to create a language to express a shattered world. A Country Road, A Tree is a portrait of the extremes of human experience alchemized into one man’s timeless art.

Book excerpt: This second book by David Esling is a worthy companion for its predecessor “A FLOWING THROUGH”. We read again the narrative of a teacher’s creative approaches for teaching and learning within a primary school in a socially disadvantaged suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, towards the end of his career. “A FLOWING THROUGH TOO” discusses a series of artistic explorations that flow from simple staring points, pass by milestones and finish with polished achievements. The inspirational stories of his explorations with the children by his side will captivate the hearts and minds of student teachers, teachers, teachers of teachers and all those who love to work alongside children. The text of each explorative journey is accompanied by the teacher’s photographs and include relevant and interesting conversations between the participants. Together, they bring the stories back to life and invite the reader to sit alongside and participate in the explorations. The children’s art, mainly drawing, was often outstanding, but the journey rather than the destination carried the greater significance. Their emerging skills as observers and the developing expertise in their interpretations of what they could see were remarkable. However, David used art as a means of reaching out to children, many of whom had no wish to attend school. Their shared successes brought about a dramatic rise in the children’s self-esteem, a more positive attitude towards learning, and improving the relationships with each other. School became an exciting place as the teacher and the children together played the active roles of teachers and learners. They were learning how to learn.

Capturing her most precious memories in written word and the deep spiritual truths taught to her along the way, the author shares her most cherished treasure with you, the reader. Be prepared to laugh, smile, and even cry as the message of these most endearing relationships trigger the memory of your own special moments in time. You may even be inspired to rise to the challenges presented by the truth of God's Word, as the Holy Spirit brings conviction to your own personal journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still Modernism offers a critique of the modernist imperative to embrace motion, speed, and mobility. In the context of the rise of kinetic technologies and the invention of motion pictures, it claims that stillness is nonetheless an essential tactic of modernist innovation. More specifically, the book looks at the ways in which photographic stillness emerges as a counterpoint to motion and to film, asserting its own clear visibility against the blur of kinesis. Photographic stillness becomes a means to resist the ephemerality of motion and to get at and articulate something real or essential by way of its fixed limits. Combining art history, film studies and literary studies, Louise Hornby reveals how photographers, filmmakers, and writers, even at their most kinetic, did not surrender attention to points of stillness. Rather, the still image, understood through photography, establishes itself as a mode of resistance and provides a formal response to various modernist efforts to see better, to attend more closely, and to remove the fetters of subjectivity and experience. Still Modernism brings together a series of canonical texts, films, and photographs, the selection of which reinforces the central claim that stillness does not lurk at the margins of modernism, but was constitutive of its very foundations. In a series of comparisons drawing from literary and visual objects, Hornby argues that still photography allows film to access its own diffuse images of motion; photography's duplicative form provides a serial structure for modernist efforts to represent the face; its iterative structure articulates the jerky rhythms of experimental narrative as perambulation; and its processes of development allow for the world to emerge independent of the human observer. Casting new light on the relationship between photography and film, Hornby situates the struggle between the still and the kinetic at the center of modernist culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on anxiety and motivation has witnessed substantial progress in recent years in developing innovative perspectives and applying advanced psychometric tools. The most important contributions were made by cognitively oriented psychologists who have related the information processing view to anxiety and motivation. The organized knowledge about oneself and the storage, processing and retrieval of information concerned with one's attitude and behavior strongly influences the way people think, feel and act. Therefore, self-referent thoughts play a major role as a cognitive component in anxiety and motivation. It is the idea of this book to integrate different lines of thinking in the field of anxiety and motivation by relating both topics to self-focussed attention, self-concept and self-evaluation in achievement contexts as well as in social contexts.

Book excerpt: Along with Louise Erdrich's "Love Medicine", Leslie Marmon Silko's "Ceremony" is one of the two most widely taught and studied Native American literature texts. In "Ceremony" Silko recounts a young man's search for consolation in his tribe's history and traditions, and his resulting voyage of self-discovery and discovery of the world. This casebook includes a variety of theoretical approaches and provides readers with crucial information, especially on Native American beliefs, that will enhance their understanding and appreciation of this contemporary classic. This collection also includes two interviews with Leslie Marmon Silko in which she explains the importance of oral tradition and storytelling, along with the autobiographical basis of the novel.
