Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Civil War (1642-53) is one of the most crucial periods in British history. Martyn Bennett introduces the reader to the main debates surrounding the Civil War which continue to be debated by historians. He considers the repercussions both on government and religion, of Parliament's failure to secure stability after the Royalist defeat in 1646, and argues that this opened the way for far more radical reforms. The book deals with the military campaigns in all four nations, placing the war in its full British and Irish context.

Book excerpt: This volume is a study of popular behaviour during the English Civil War. The book makes three claims. The first is that English counties did not behave as homogeneous units during the conflict of 1642-46, but that they divided instead along regional lines, certain areas supporting Parliament, others supporting the King. The second is that this general rule applied to cities too, and that in urban communities it is possible to discern both 'Royalist' and 'Parliamentarian' parishes. The third is that these internal divisions were not simply temporary alignments, conjured up by extraordinary circumstances, but that they reflected deep and enduring splits in local society, contrasting patterns of popular behaviour stretching back over very many years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The English Civil War is a joy to behold, a thing of beauty... this will be the civil war atlas against which all others will judged and the battle maps in particular will quickly become the benchmark for all future civil war maps.' -- Professor Martyn Bennett, Department of History, Languages and Global Studies, Nottingham Trent University The English Civil Wars (1638–51) comprised the deadliest conflict ever fought on British soil, in which brother took up arms against brother, father fought against son, and towns, cities and villages fortified themselves in the cause of Royalists or Parliamentarians. Although much historical attention has focused on the events in England and the key battles of Edgehill, Marston Moor and Naseby, this was a conflict that engulfed the entirety of the Three Kingdoms and led to a trial and execution that profoundly shaped the British monarchy and Parliament. This beautifully presented atlas tells the whole story of Britain's revolutionary civil war, from the earliest skirmishes of the Bishops' Wars in 1639–40 through to 1651, when Charles II's defeat at Worcester crushed the Royalist cause, leading to a decade of Stuart exile. Each map is supported by a detailed text, providing a complete explanation of the complex and fluctuating conflict that ultimately meant that the Crown would always be answerable to Parliament.

Book Synopsis Civil War, Interregnum and Restoration in Gloucestershire, 1640-1672 by : Andrew Richard Warmington
Download or read book Civil War, Interregnum and Restoration in Gloucestershire, 1640-1672 written by Andrew Richard Warmington and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1997 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Warmington's examination of the impact of the Civil War in Gloucestershire begins with the descent into war between 1640 and 1642, showing how the two sides formed and why the Parliamentarians had the more durable war machine. He then goes on to consider the anarchic situation between 1645 and 1649, and the series of new experiments in government which followed until 1660. The book demonstrates how the war created an almost entirely new governing group of minor gentlemen, based on military service to the regime and religious affiliations, looks at the vexed question of the cultural dimensions of popular allegiance in the period, and examines popular activity (or lack of it) in Gloucestershire's distinct regions of Vale, Wold and Forest during the Civil War. The attempted rebellion of 1659 is examined in detail.

Book Synopsis The Cromwellian Protectorate by : Barry Coward
Download or read book The Cromwellian Protectorate written by Barry Coward and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cromwellian Protectorate examines the nature of the first regime ever to have had effective control of the British Isles and the impact that it had on England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and on Britain’s international reputation. Few previous studies of the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell and his son, Richard, have given sufficient emphasis to its achievements. Instead they have characterized it either as "a military dictatorship" or a reactionary regime that after the revolutionary events of 1649 put Britain on a road that led inevitably to the restoration of the monarchy. This book presents an alternative view of the Cromwellian Protectorate.
