Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Count of Monte Cristo as Retold by Sherlock Holmes begins with a condensed retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, related through the voice of Sherlock Holmes. It includes exhilarating new adventures, characters, and ideas, carrying the reader through book I leading to book II and with book III promising an ever-expanding new series based on the classic. The author consulted the original French as well as the oldest English translations of The Count of Monte Cristo, but the style of the retelling, in the distinctive voice of Sherlock Holmes, constitutes a new work. Books II and III, soon to follow, are wholly original sequels although they include characters from the original classic. The author of The Count of Monte Cristo as Retold by Sherlock Holmes enjoyed the 2003 translation by Robin Buss of the The Count of Monte Cristo, which helped to inspire both this work and the first sequel in this series, The Sultan of Monte Cristo. The most recent (2003) unabridged translation by Buss is indispensable to fully appreciate the original story. Those who have already had the pleasure of reading The Sultan of Monte Cristo will certainly appreciate the unique way in which the Holy Ghost Writer has expanded the original story without the help of anyone (except perhaps from the ghost of Dumas himself). While The Count of Monte Cristo has been enjoyed by millions as a stand-alone work, this work is an even easier read of the original classic, as it has a condensed version of the original story, uniquely retold in the voice of Sherlock Holmes.

Book excerpt: The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, is thought by many of its readers to be the greatest novel ever written. This book revisits Dumas' story from the viewpoint of one of the minor characters, who revisits and retells the story many years later after the principal characters are all deceased. But the retelling is more than a plot summary. Although nothing in this history is inconsistent with Dumas' story, the novel brings an entirely new perspective to the events described by Dumas and also adds details that shed new light on the story. Most significantly, this account continues the story after the end of Dumas' novel. Indeed, many of the characters of Dumas' original story become reunited in surprising ways and we learn more about the later lives of Mercedes and Edmond, Valentine and Maximilian, Ali and Haidee, and even of Danglars and Villefort. This book is intended both for those who have no previous knowledge of Dumas' novel and for those who are quite familiar with it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this illustrated version, Tom Sawyer is still a troublemaker as we hear this classic story being told by Sherlock Holmes. After Tom gets in trouble, he is ordered by Aunt Polly, with whom he lives, to whitewash their fence. When his friends see him painting the fence, Tom pretends like he loves the chore to make his friends jealous. They beg him to let them help. This is a prime example of Tom's manipulative behavior. Sherlock Holmes tells how romantically devoted Tom is to Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town. They like each other, but Becky is hurt when she finds out that Tom liked someone else before her. Eventually, he takes the blame for a book she ruined, making her like him again. Sherlock Holmes shows us how Tom is always getting into trouble, usually with his friend, Huckleberry Finn. Together they sneak out to a graveyard at night, where they witness Injun Joe murder Dr. Robinson. Dr. Watson is amused that Tom, Huck, and their friend, Joe Harper, run away for a little while, making the town think they are dead. Eventually they come back, though, and Tom testifies against Injun Joe in court. Subsequently, Sherlock Holmes relates how Injun Joe runs away and Tom is terrified to death. His terror does not stop him from making trouble, though. While he and Huck are hunting for treasure one night, they discover that Injun Joe, who is disguised as a deaf-mute Spaniard, has treasure of his own to bury. Dr. Watson learns why Huck agrees to spy on Injun Joe to see where he buries the treasure, while Tom goes on a picnic with his class to McDougal's Cave. During the picnic, Tom and Becky wander off and get lost. Huck figures out that Injun Joe plans on hurting Widow Douglas. He reports the crime and Injun Joe runs away to McDougal's Cave. Meanwhile, Tom and Becky are lost for several days in the cave. Eventually they stumble across Injun Joe, but hide before he sees them. Shortly after, Tom figures out how to get out of the cave with Becky. He tells Judge Thatcher about Injun Joe being inside and the town decides to seal Injun Joe inside the cave. Later, Tom returns to the cave, where he discovers Injun Joe's starved corpse. Shortly thereafter, he and Huck discover where Injun Joe hid his gold. The Widow Douglas adopts Huck, who is unhappy about this development. Tom convinces him to give it a try, promising that it won't stop them from getting up to the occasional mischief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantès is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas’ epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s. While in prison, Dantès befriends an older prisoner who educates him and reveals the location of a vast treasure on the island of Monte Cristo. After a daring escape, Dantès acquires the treasure and transforms himself into the wealthy and enigmatic Count of Monte Cristo. He then embarks on a quest for vengeance against those who betrayed him, using his newfound wealth and influence to manipulate their lives. The novel is renowned for its intricate plot, rich character development, and themes of justice, revenge, and redemption. It explores the moral consequences of seeking revenge and the complexities of human nature. "The Count of Monte Cristo" has been adapted into numerous films, television series, and stage productions, cementing its status as one of the most enduring and beloved works of literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intertextuality has signaled change, appropriation, adaptation, and derivation. It has focused readers on irresolvable questions of influence and origination, progressive or regressive movement across continents, periods, and media. Inhabited by Stories: Critical Essays on Tales Retold takes a different approach. What would a model of literary study look like that steps out of time’s river and embraces not only the presence and proximity of the world to the senses, but also of the past and the future to the present here and now? When stories inhabit us, imagination and memory extend our ability to see and feel. Phenomenological experience is lived, not just thought. Such a perspective suggests that the past and future inhabit the present, increase the depth of sensory perception itself, and enrich the range of our affective and ethical responses. Grounded in the lived experience of reading, this perspective offers an alternative to an idea of intertextuality as simply following lines of influence and appropriation. It focuses on the expansion of experience created by telling and retelling stories. Ironically, for literary theorists and critics, perhaps the highest form of both praise and critique is a tale retold, since such retellings attest to literature’s instructive power and its perennial regeneration.
