Book excerpt: The Counsel of Spent is to be used as a field guide, lovingly prepared with words and images that do not satisfy but irritate. It is a book that wishes to add its voice to those who desire to have done with the endless vacillating between slavery and appeasement, fear and denial. It is a book that demands that all cast off the burden of debt and go out onto the streetfor a true democracy necessitates a commitment where one acknowledges that there is nothing left to hang on to, that there is nothing left to lose and everything to transform. These are pages that fan the flames of bonfires and simple music. Written by Inventory, a collective of British artists, writers and art theorists founded in 1996 and edited by Nina Power as part of the Common Objectives series.

Book excerpt: "Bill Coleman's story is one that younger generations should mark and inwardly digest, lest they forget the pioneers who helped to make a better America possible." —From the Foreword by Stephen G. Breyer William Coleman has spent a lifetime opening doors and breaking down barriers. He has been an eyewitness to history; moreover, he has made history. This is his inspiring story, in his own words. Americans of color faced daunting barriers in the 1940s. Despite graduating first in his class at Harvard Law and clerking for Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, Coleman was shut out of major East Coast law firms. But as the Philadelphia native writes, "The times, they were a'changing." He not only benefited from that change—he helped propel it, by way of dogged determination, undeniable intellect, and stellar accomplishment. Coleman's legal work with Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund helped jumpstart the civil rights movement in the 1950s. He was the first American of color to clerk for the Supreme Court, and later served as senior counsel to the Warren Commission, investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In 1975 he was appointed secretary of transportation by President Gerald Ford—the first American of color to serve in a Republican cabinet—and in 1995 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Bill Clinton. At his core, Bill Coleman is a lawyer. He strives to be a "counsel for the situation"—an advocate able to take on major matters in a variety of legal disciplines while upholding the highest traditions of justice and the public interest. He is fiercely proud of the legal profession's role in a democratic society and free economy, and he is grateful for the opportunities that profession has afforded him in the court room, the board room, and the corridors of power. It is through this prism that he relates his own story—his life and the law. The results speak for them

Book excerpt: Expository preaching has been on the rise over the last five decades, with more and more pastors preaching through entire books of the Bible systematically. But few, if any, preachers have a long-term plan to teach through every book of the Bible over a lifetime of ministry. Since the whole Bible is God’s Word to his people, all of Scripture is important in order to grow as Christians. Written to make a case for the necessity of a long-term plan for preaching through the entire Bible instead of just through individual books, this is not just a book on how to preach, but also how to plan and prepare long-range preaching programs through the whole counsel of God.

Here there is hope: any sin can be forgiven, and Christ gives men and women the grace to mortify fleshly desires and to humbly live for him.

Book excerpt: In this “provocative and persuasive work,” the health advocate reveals the dirty economics of meat—an industry that’s eating into your wallet (Publishers Weekly). Few Americans are aware of the economic system that supports our country’s supply of animal foods. Yet these forces affect us in a number of ways—none of them good. Though we only pay a few dollars per pound of meat at the grocery store, we pay far more in tax-fueled government subsidies—$38 billion more, to be exact. And subsidies are just one layer of meat’s hidden cost. But in Meatonomics, lawyer and sustainability advocate David Robinson Simon offers a path toward lasting solutions. Animal food producers maintain market dominance with artificially low prices, misleading PR, and an outsized influence over legislation. But counteracting these manipulations is easy—with the economic sanity of plant-based foods. In Meatonomics, Simon demonstrates: How government-funded marketing influences what we think of as healthy eating How much of our money is spent to prop up the meat industry How we can change our habits and our country for the better “Spectacularly important.” —John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution “[A] well-researched, passionately written book.” —Publishers Weekly
