Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the autobiography of Dr. Larry Stephens. It traces his life from the time that he was born in 1941 in a rural setting in a small town called Pillowville, Tennessee. He was born in very poor circumstances and lived there the first few years of his life. His Mother and Father were share croppers during these early years. He lived on garden vegetables and squirrels and rabbits. He moved from these circumstances to a small city called Arlington, Tennessee. During these early years, education was not that important to him. Then he moved to a somewhat larger city which had a U. S. Naval base located in it. It was here that he changed his attitude about education when the Russians launched the satellite called Sputnik 1 into orbit in 1957. In the 11th and 12th grades, he took Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Chemistry, and Physics and made very outstanding grades in these courses. In the summers, he worked and helped pay his way through Memphis State University where he received his B. S. in Mathematics and Physics. He then moved to Tucson, Arizona and received his M. A. in Mathematics. Finally, he received his Ph. D degree from Oklahoma State University. He joined the staff at University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) in 1974 and is about to finish his career there.

Download or read book Waters of Discord written by Rodman L. Underwood and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the American Civil War the Federal government imposed a blockade of the southern coast of the Confederate States of America, including the dark corner of the Confederacy--Texas. Much of the fighting in Texas during the Civil War took place in the state's coastal counties and the adjoining Gulf of Mexico waters, and nearly all of these engagements were involved in one way or another with the Union blockade of the Texas coast. This book examines all major blockade-related land and sea engagements in and near Texas, and also includes many minor ones. It begins with a discussion of the blockade's creation and then concentrates on the successful Confederate efforts to evade the blockade by shipping cotton out of Mexico and, in return, receiving materiel and civilian goods through that neutral nation. The author also covers political intrigue and the spy activity with the French who had invaded Mexico. The book concludes with an analysis of the effectiveness of the Union blockade of Texas.

Book Synopsis The 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War by : Eric R. Faust
Download or read book The 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War written by Eric R. Faust and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry first deployed to Baltimore, where the soldiers' exemplary demeanor charmed a mainly secessionist population. Their subsequent service along the Mississippi River was a perfect storm of epidemic disease, logistical failures, guerrilla warfare, profiteering, martinet West Pointers and scheming field officers, along with the doldrums of camp life punctuated by bloody battles. The Michiganders responded with alcoholism, insubordination and depredations. Yet they saved the Union right at Baton Rouge and executed suicidal charges at Port Hudson. This first modern history of the controversial regiment concludes with a statistical analysis, a roster and a brief summary of its service following conversion to heavy artillery.
