Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting tale of family, faith, and survival, Abner's Story begins in the 1730's after ten-year-old Abner and his friend Schotzy hear William Penn's land agent tell of the opportunities in Pennsylvania. The boys are excited and ask Abner's grandpa to teach them all they need to know to go to America, including how to build a house. As Grandpa is planning to repair Widow Schneider's porch the next day he agrees to begin by taking the boys along to help. However, he is unaware that Schotzy's grandfather, a widower, has plans of his own. He accompanies Schotzy to the work site where he sweet talks the widow and then disappears. The boys are caught up in a series of events over which they have no control. There is tension in the village because by law, everyone must worship in the official church. However, Abner's family belongs to a group that refused to do so. The king has forced Abner's father to work for him, and is beginning to clamp down on the dissidents. Trouble breaks out when several boys from their religious group play a prank at the official church. "This work makes a contribution toward retaining a fast-vanishing culture that of the Pennsylvania Dutch. One intriguing part of their culture is its language, which is a form of German rather than Dutch. The language is often interspersed with English words, and some English speakers of Pennsylvania Dutch intersperse their language with German words. It's all part of what makes the Pennsylvania Dutch seem so quaint. Abner's Story digs into that culture and its language. Indeed, it effectively begins before the Pennsylvania Dutch era to when they were farmers living in Germany. One other point: Abner's Story describes powwowing and other Pennsylvania Dutch superstitions. Powwowing, a kind of faith healing bordering on white magic, will intrigue readers turning these pages. Information on these practices, also on the wane in Pennsylvania Dutch culture, deserve to be captured for posterity. Abner's Story does just that." James McClure, Managing Editor, York Daily Record York, Pennsylvania. "As York County celebrates the past 250 years, we commend the heartfelt effort to document and preserve this facet of our heritage? Rarely have I read a story that expressed the feelings of the people who were not the stereotypical adventurers that we like to think came here. Rather, they are ordinary folks being stifled by others' belief systems. They only thought of leaving their beloved homeland after it was no longer safe to stay in their own homes." Karen Hostetter, Headquarters Manager, 250th Year Anniversary Committee of York County, York, Pennsylvania. Abner's Story is not difficult reading and is suitable for the entire family as well as public, private, and Christian schools. It is historically accurate, fast moving, filled with interesting characters, laced with ethical values and humor, as well as pathos and mystery.

Book excerpt: Cosmic ray physics has recently attracted a great deal of attention from the high energy physics community because of the discovery of new sources and the advent of new techniques. The result of a series of lectures prepared for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, this book is a general introduction to experimental techniques and results in the field of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. It succinctly summarizes the rapidly developing field, and provides modern results that include data from newer detectors. Combining experiment and theory, the text explores the results of a single, easy-to-understand experiment to tie together various issues involved in the physics of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays.

Book excerpt: Rhodri Evans tells the story of what we know about the universe, from Jacobus Kapteyn’s Island universe at the turn of the 20th Century, and the discovery by Hubble that the nebulae were external to our own galaxy, through Gamow’s early work on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and its subsequent discovery by Penzias and Wilson, to modern day satellite-lead CMB research. Research results from the ground-based experiments DASI, BOOMERANG, and satellite missions COBE, WMAP and Planck are explained and interpreted to show how our current picture of the universe was arrived at, and the author looks at the future of CMB research and what we still need to learn. This account is enlivened by Dr Rhodri Evans' personal connections to the characters and places in the story.

He presents a cross-section of the medieval knowledge of the physical world as deliberated and discussed by authors from the 9th to the 15th centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Illustrated History of Science is the first ever fully illustrated global history of science, from Aristotle to the atom bomb - and beyond. The first part of the book tells the story of science in both East and West from antiquity to the Enlightenment: from the ancient Mediterranean world to ancient China; from the exchanges between Islamic and Christian scholars in the Middle Ages to the Chinese invention of gunpowder, paper, and the printing press; from the Scientific Revolution of sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe to the intellectual ferment of the eighteenth century. The chapters that follow focus on the increasingly specialized story of science since end of the eighteenth century, covering experimental science in the laboratory from Michael Faraday to CERN; the exploration of nature, from intrepid Victorian explorers to twentieth century primatologists; the mapping of the universe, from the discovery of Uranus to Big Bang theory; the impact of evolutionary ideas, from Lamarck, Darwin, and Wallace to DNA; and the story of theoretical physics, from James Clark Maxwell to Quantum Theory and beyond. A concluding chapter reflects on how scientists have communicated their work to a wider public, from the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the internet in the early twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: There is no more profound, enduring or fascinating question in all of science than that of how time, space, and matter began. Now John Barrow, who has been at the cutting edge of research in this area and has written extensively about it, guides us on a journey to the beginning of time, into a world of temperatures and densities so high that we cannot recreate them in a laboratory. With new insights, Barrow draws us into the latest speculative theories about the nature of time and the “inflationary universe,” explains “wormholes,” showing how they bear upon the fact of our own existence, and considers whether there was a “singularity” at the inception of the universe. Here is a treatment so up-to-date and intellectually rich, deaing with ideas and speculation at the farthest frontier of science, that neither novice nor expert will want to miss what Barrow has to say. The Origin of the Universe is ”In the Beginning” for beginners—the latest information from a first-rate scientist and science writer.

Book excerpt: Motion Unification Finally. A physics book that is not afraid to answer a few why questions. This book generally presents concepts of physics through easily understandable narratives from the perspective of how they work physically rather than from the formula perspective that physicists generally employ to develop concepts mathematically using pattern recognition. This book also presents new concepts as well as new perspective to many older concepts that will be of interest to established physicists. While reading this book you will discover answers to many of the familiar-but-enigmatic questions of physics and astronomy. Some of those answers are revealed here in print for the first time. This book contains a glossary of many of the important physics terms used in the book as well as about 140 new terms. The new approach of this book sometimes requires new vocabulary. Motion Unification dares to question one of the basic tenets of physics. By questioning the status quo, Motion Unification is able to solve what many consider the foremost enigma of astrophysics today dark energy. Due to the role dark energy plays in the understanding of space, the dark energy that permeates space will be called the space network. Once we understand how motion is achieved and maintained through the space network, we will not be too surprised to learn that there are actually three types of gravity and that there are two interpretations of each. You are not ever likely to forget the day you first learned about orbitar nielucion before most people had even heard its name!
