Besides his own banking interests which made him one of the richest men in England, and his many tracts on currency and banking subjects, his library in Reading (which included over 10,000 volumes from his friend J.R. Book excerpt: This is the second of a three-volume work constituting a comprehensive, scholarly edition of the correspondence of the English economist, Alfred Marshall (1842-1924), one of the leading figures in the development of economics and the founder of the Cambridge School of Economics. The edition fills a long-standing gap in the history of economic thought with hitherto unpublished material. Students will find it a basic resource for understanding the development of economics and other social sciences in the period since 1870. In particular, it provides much new information about Marshall's views on economic, social and political issues, his struggles to promote the teaching of economics at the University of Cambridge, and his relations with colleagues in Cambridge and elsewhere. Marshall's letters are notable for their frankness and spontaneity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive account and reconsideration of the contribution to political economy of Thomas Tooke (1774-1858), classical economist and influential monetary theorist. Its chief purpose is to examine Tooke’s contributions to political economy with the aim of bringing to light its unified nature and its important legacy to contemporary economics. In doing so the book aims to throw new light on monetary analysis within the framework of classical economics. There remains no comprehensive account of Tooke’s contributions that is concerned with showing his lasting and ongoing influence on the development of monetary thought. The book provides an interpretation and analytical study of Tooke’s political economy from the standpoint of the classical tradition. This enables a demonstration of how his constructive contribution throws a new light on monetary thought in this tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a full and authoritative account of the history of private banking, beginning with its development in conjunction with the world markets served by and centred on a few European cities, notably Amsterdam and London. These banks were usually partnerships, a form of organization which persisted as the role of private banking changed in response to the political and economic transformations of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was in this period, and the succeeding Golden Age of private banking from 1815 to the 1870s, that many of the great names this book treats rose to fame: Baring, Rothschild, Mallet and Hottinger became synonymous with wealth and economic power, as German, French and the remarkably long-lasting Geneva banks flourished and expanded. The last parts of this study detail the way in which private banking adapted to the age of the corporate economy from the 1870s to the 1930s, the decline during and after the Great Depression and the post-war renaissance. It concludes with an appraisal of the causes and consequences of the modern expansion of private banking: no longer the exclusive preserve of partnerships, the management of investment portfolios of wealthy individuals and institutions is now a major concern of international joint-stock banks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Letters of Richard Cobden (1804-1865) provides, in four printed volumes, the first critical edition of Cobden's letters, publishing the complete text in as near the original form as possible. The letters are accompanied by full scholarly apparatus, together with an introduction to each volume which re-assesses Cobden's importance in their light. Together, these volumes make available a unique source of the understanding of British liberalism in its European and international contexts, throwing new light on issues such as the repeal of the Corn Laws, British radical movements, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, Anglo-French relations, and the American Civil War. The fourth and final volume, drawing on some forty-six archives worldwide, is dominated by Cobden's search for a permanent political legacy at home and abroad, following the severe check to his health in the autumn of 1859. In January 1860, he succeeded in negotiating the Anglo-French Commercial Treaty, a landmark in Anglo-French relations designed to bind the two nations closer together, and to provide the basis for a Europe united by free trade. Yet the Treaty's benefits were threatened by a continuing naval arms race between Britain and France, fuelled by what Cobden saw as self-interested scare mongering in his tract The Three Panics (1862). By 1862 an even bigger danger was the possibility that British industry's need for cotton might precipitate intervention in the American Civil War. Much of Cobden's correspondence now centred on the necessity of non-intervention and a campaign for the reform of international maritime law, while he played a major part in attempts to alleviate the effects of the 'Cotton Famine' in Lancashire. In addition to Anglo-American relations, Cobden, the 'International Man', continued to monitor the exercise of British power around the globe. He was convinced that the 'gunboat' diplomacy of his prime antagonist, Lord Palmerston, was ultimately harmful to Britain, whose welfare demanded limited military expenditure and the dismantling of the British 'colonial system'. Known for a long time as the 'prophet in the wilderness', in 1864 Cobden welcomed Palmerston's inability to intervene in the Schleswig-Holstein crisis as a key turning-point in Britain's foreign policy, which, together with the imminent end of the American Civil War, opened up the prospect of a new reform movement at home. Disappointed with the growing apathy of the entrepreneurs he had once mobilised in the Anti-Corn Law League, Cobden now promoted the enfranchisement of the working classes as necessary and desirable in order to achieve the reform of the aristocratic state for which he had campaigned since the 1830s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of four volumes, this book provides a unique insight into the career of one of Britain's leading nineteenth-century politicians. Richard Cobden (1804-1865) moved rapidly from business success in Manchester into the worlds of local, national and international politics, providing a case study in social mobility in the Industrial Revolution. He travelled extensively, visiting the United States, the Near East, and the continent writing influential pamphlets, before undertaking the campaign against the British Corn Laws for which he remains best known. Drawing on material from Britain, Europe, and the United States, the letters are accompanied by notes and an introduction by Anthony Howe, explaining the unusual history of the letters and re-assessing Cobden's importance in their light. But the letters reveal not only Cobden the anti-corn law crusader, but provide us with a greater understanding of wider aspects of middle class politics and culture in their formative period in Britain and Europe. Together, these four volumes provide a unique source on British liberalism in its European and international contexts, throwing new light on issues such as the repeal of the Corn Laws, the British radical movements, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and the American Civil War.

In his work readers can observe his transformation from the supporter of free market to his acceptance of interventions in the economy, if there were sufficient utilitarian grounds. Alongside his economic philosophy Mill also discussed normative issues such as ideal systems of political economy, critiquing proposed systems such as communism and socialism. Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill's 'The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill' is a landmark collection of essays and philosophical writings that explore topics such as utilitarianism, political economy, and individual freedom. Mill's writing is characterized by its clarity, logical reasoning, and commitment to advancing social and political progress. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century England, Mill's works are considered essential reading for anyone interested in political philosophy and ethics. The collection includes influential works such as 'On Liberty' and 'Utilitarianism', which continue to shape modern debates on individual liberty and the role of government in society. John Stuart Mill, a prominent British philosopher and economist, was a leading figure in the utilitarian movement and a fierce advocate for individual rights and freedom of speech. His upbringing in a family of philosophers and his own experiences as a civil servant greatly influenced his writings, which sought to reconcile individual liberty with social progress. I highly recommend 'The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill' to readers interested in political philosophy, ethics, and the history of ideas. Mill's insightful and thought-provoking essays continue to resonate with contemporary issues and will undoubtedly enrich the intellectual curiosity of any reader.
