Research shows aspects of school climate impact students, parents, teachers and administrators. Climate is global to the school yet exists as a microclimate in the classroom. The influencers of climate and reaction to climate are intertwined; as one influences the others, a variety of perspectives contribute to the overall picture. This study considers the teacher perspective as an indicator of climate as part of overall organizational health. As one must consider organizational health as a pertinent part of overall school climate, this research study utilized a reduced form of the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire designed by Bentley and Rempel to measure teacher morale (1980). Teachers from two schools within one district voluntarily and anonymously answered questions on ten subtopics reflecting their experiences as a teacher in the school environment. This organizational health inventory provided feedback from participants on 10 factors indicating levels of agreement or disagreement on a four point Likert scale (from 4 = strongly agree to 1= strongly disagree). Teachers were also asked to indicate years of experience on the presurvey question, as this study also considered if factors such as teacher years of experience had any impact on teacher perspective of climate. School climate data and data from the averages of standardized PARCC test scores per school and subject area were analyzed using Bivariate Correlation tests, revealing no significant relationship between school climate and student achievement. Although survey data provided potential consideration for areas of improvement for the district in the study, recommendations by the researcher are for further study in a wider scope to increase generalizability. Book excerpt: Teachers comprise the greatest professional population of a school; they have the most contact with students; and they have perhaps the greatest influence on school climate. For this reason, teacher morale is a topic of great concern to public school administrators. Moreover, research suggests that poor teacher morale negatively affects student performance just as high teacher morale positively affects student performance. Research also indicates that teacher morale is influenced more by the leadership style of the principal than any other single factor. This study was designed to determine whether certain relationships exist between teacher morale and the following independent variables: (1) principal trust and (2) leadership satisfaction. Additionally, investigations were conducted to determine whether the aforementioned independent variables lead to increased student achievement. Information regarding teacher morale was collected from 65 teachers using the 2009 MDed - Multi Dimensional Education Incorporated (MDed) Survey at three 7-8 Initiative schools in a large suburban district in southeast Texas. It was the intent of this study to determine whether principal leadership and teacher morale are significantly correlated. The study also demonstrated whether or not teachers' and principals' perceptions of leadership behaviors contribute to student achievement. vi After analyzing the data, it was found that principal leadership behaviors do significantly impact teacher morale, and student achievement. Additionally, it was found that positive teacher morale and student achievement in the Initiative Schools influenced positive student behaviors, ultimately reducing student discipline referrals. Multiple interventions were put into place that led to the positive outcomes. The interventions, new principal leadership, ongoing intensive staff development, establishment of small learning communities, reduction of student population and low student to teacher class ratios, were the catalysts that lead to the Initiative Schools' transformational success, a transformation of high teacher morale, increased student achievement, and positive student behaviors.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of teacher morale and school culture on student achievement. The setting for this research was a high school in a small, semi- urban school district in the Piedmont of North Carolina. For the purpose of this study, teacher morale and school culture were based on the opinion of English II and biology teachers at the study site. The study’s methodology included surveying English II and biology teachers on teacher morale and school culture. To measure teacher morale, the Purdue Teacher Opinionnaire was given to each participant. To measure the school’s culture, the School Culture Survey was given to each participant. A focus group was held to examine the results of teacher morale and school culture and to further exam the survey results. To measure student achievement, End-of-Course (EOC) exams scores for English II and biology were examined. Results from each participant’s two surveys on morale and school culture were analyzed with their students’ achievement data on the EOC exams. Data results on teacher morale reflected low teacher morale for each participant except one. Data results on school culture revealed positive school culture for all participants except one. Student achievement data for both English II and biology reflected scores above mastery for all participants except one. Correlations ran on teacher morale and student achievement as well as on school culture and student achievement revealed a positive correlation for both; however, neither correlation proved to be statistically significant.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-method study was to determine if specific interpersonal skills (trustworthiness, communication, empathy, and problem-solving) possessed by principals, as perceived by teachers, are important characteristics in creating and maintaining a positive school climate, increasing student learning, and retaining teachers in the elementary school setting. The participants in the study were teachers from 13 elementary schools in a North Carolina county. This study used both quantitative and qualitative data from a combined principal soft skill and climate survey, 2015–2016 North Carolina report card on teacher retention, 2015–2016 EOG math/reading scores, and results from teacher interviews to examine the relationship between administrator interpersonal skills on school climate, student learning, and teacher retention. -- Based on the data from this research, principal interpersonal skills do impact school climate. The two interpersonal skills that showed significance as measured by their relationship to climate were trust and problem-solving. Although the interpersonal skills within this study did not statistically predict reading proficiency and math proficiency, teacher interviews clearly identified the importance of principal interpersonal skills with regard to student performance in elementary schools. Finally, principal interpersonal skills did not statistically predict teacher turnover in this research; however, trend data collected from teacher interviews indicated that teacher morale and retention were based on the skills of the school leader.

Book excerpt: The issue that my study addressed was the declining culture of Suburban Middle School, (SMS) a pseudonym used to describe a large suburban middle school in southeastern North Carolina. Declining or stagnant test scores over the last three years coincided with abrupt changes in leadership, new curriculum, and increasing enrollment. These three factors impacted teacher morale, which in turn impacted school climate and, ultimately, school culture. To address this problem, the purpose of my study was to implement a five-phase action research project which would identify teacher morale indicators and provide data for interventions to increase teacher morale and improve school climate, leading to a culture focused on high student achievement. In implementing a single site case study, using a convergent parallel mixed methods design, I used End of Grade (EOG) and quarterly benchmark data to illuminate student achievement. I collected quantitative data about teacher morale concurrently through the use of a survey administered quarterly to staff. Qualitative aspects of my study included the conduct, transcription, and grounded theory analysis of interviews, observations, and field notes from conversations with teachers at SMS. As a result of my study, I anticipated that student achievement would increase due to improved teacher morale, leading to a more positive school climate and an enhanced school culture. The association between positive teacher morale and student achievement that underpinned my study is of relevance to schools who face declining student achievement scores. My study provides a structure for interventions and a plan for enhancing school culture through improving teacher morale and other climate indicators.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the impact of the school climate components of teacher job satisfaction, morale, and efficacy on student achievement. This qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews of both principals and teachers, reviewed information pertaining to the school district's Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation, and from the School Matters website pertaining to one school that made Adequate Yearly Progress, and one that did not make Adequate Yearly Progress. The sample of eight teachers was selected using a purposive sampling and the accounts of their personal ideas, feelings, beliefs, and perceptions of their feelings of job satisfaction, morale, and efficacy were presented through direct quotes to provide richness in detailing their real world descriptions. The principals at both elementary schools were also interviewed to determine their feelings about the climate within their respective buildings. Teachers at the both schools indicated that their personal feelings did not influence their professional obligations; however, in the school that did not make Adequate Yearly Progress, the teachers indicated that they wanted to be respected by their principal; therefore, in this study, it appears that feelings of job satisfaction can impact a school's potential to make Adequate Yearly Progress. Findings revealed that teacher morale has the potential to impact a school's ability to make Adequate Yearly Progress because in the school that made Adequate Yearly Progress, there was a sense of trust, confidence, and enthusiasm that existed among its teachers, whereas, in the school that did not make Adequate Yearly Progress, this type of atmosphere was not fully operational. Teacher efficacy did not appear to have an impact on a school's potential to make Adequate Yearly Progress because teachers at both schools were confident about their ability to successfully teach their students. School principals and those aspiring to be building level supervisors, may wish to explore the findings of this research to address components of school climate. This information can enable them to foster an environment that is conducive for student learning. Teachers are a valuable asset to the educational profession which includes helping students and building level administrators achieve success.
