Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as Confederate naval action is commonly overshadowed by the land battles of the Civil War, the navy's originator, Stephen Mallory, is often overlooked in favor of more famous leaders. Mallory had served as one of Florida's U.S. senators for ten years before becoming navy secretary in the Confederate government, challenged to create a valid military force where none had existed. This biography chronicles Mallory's formative years in Key West, his decades of public service, and his declining days. It discusses his career in the United States Senate, where he chaired the Committee for Naval Affairs, helping to strengthen--in an ironic twist of fate--the very navy he would later attempt to defeat. The work also examines the challenges and obstacles Mallory faced in creating a navy for the South. Special attention is given to Mallory's family relationships. Primary sources include autobiographical documents and archival records.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1660, English readers and theatergoers had never heard of a "coquette"; by the early 1700s, they could hardly watch a play, read a poem, or peruse a newspaper without encountering one. Why does British literature of this period pay so much attention to vain and flirtatious young women? Our Coquettes examines the ubiquity of the coquette in the eighteenth century to show how this figure enables authors to comment upon a series of significant social and economic developments—including the growth of consumer culture, widespread new wealth, increased travel and global trade, and changes in the perception and practice of marriage. The book surveys stage comedies, periodical essays, satirical poems, popular songs, and didactic novels to show that the early coquette is a figure of capacious desire: she finds pleasure in a wide range of choices, refusing to narrow any field of possibilities (admirers, luxury goods, friends, pets, public gatherings) down to a single option. Whereas scholars of the period have generally read the coquette as a simple and self-evident type, Our Coquettes emphasizes what is strange and surprising about this figure, revealing the coquette to be a touchstone in developing discourses about sexuality, consumerism, empire, and modernity itself. Winner of the Walker Cowen Memorial Prize for an outstanding work of scholarship in eighteenth-century studies

This volume follows the exploits of Joseph, a virtuous and handsome young man, as he embarks on a journey filled with trials, comedic situations, and social commentary. The narrative explores themes of virtue, social class, and the nature of true love. Joseph's journey is marked by his unwavering commitment to his beloved, Fanny Goodwill, and his interactions with a variety of characters who both challenge and support him along the way. Fielding's work is known for its satirical tone and its clever critique of societal norms and hypocrisies. Joseph Andrews, Vol. 2 continues to showcase Fielding's wit and narrative skill, blending humor with a thoughtful examination of human nature and social structures. Joseph Andrews, Vol. 2 is an engaging continuation of Fielding's classic novel, offering readers a deeper exploration of the characters and themes introduced in the first volume.

Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.
